Dec 16 2009Shocking News: Geeks Scare Women Away From Pursuing Careers In Computer Science

In news that shouldn't surprise anyone, not even my grandma (who thinks computers are fancy televisions from the future), a recent study has found that the geek stereotype keeps women from pursuing careers in computer science.
"When people think of computer science, the image that immediately pops into many of their minds is of the computer geek surrounded by such things as computer games, science-fiction memorabilia and junk food," said lead researcher Sapna Cheryan, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington. "That stereotype doesn't appeal to many women who don't like the portrait of masculinity that it evokes."
Not only are women missing out on some of the "best career opportunities, but computer science is missing out on female perspectives," Cheryan and her colleagues wrote in a recent issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
Well I can't say that I'm surprised. But I can say this explains why the lot of you haven't had any contact with women since going off to college (shoot for a studio art degree).
Hit the link for more info on how the study was conducted. You know, if you're bored.

I wish I was as cool as the guy in the picture.

Of course their perspective is missing.. as it should be. Women use emotion more than logic.
Crying won't make your computer do what you want.

Excuse me! Geekologie people! Can you please delete this photo?
My mom caught me by surprise when she brought me my juice box & cookies.
I did not give you permission to host it, so delete it.
I shouldn't have to keep asking.
Nex time, I'm coming after your bacon!
I have a lot of other good shots on my website, but not nearly as many shots as I take in the mouth down at the local glory hole on a Thursday evening
........... just sayin
6. cabbo - December 16, 2009 2:16 PM
I wonder what types of women they were interviewing.
@4 stop the hatin' y'all.
The real question is 'do we want women who are dumb enough to throw themselves off a good career choice due to a stereotype to have that career in the first place?'
The answer is yes, because we take what we can get.
7. Yep - December 16, 2009 2:17 PM
@4 LOL
The difference between a mac and a a woman is that women have a period only ones a month.
That and women some times need a douchebag and the Mac guy is a douchebag.

"That stereotype doesn't appeal to many women who don't like the portrait of masculinity that it evokes."
Somehow i don't think its the "masculinity" that is driving the women away...

@ 1 I see my reputation precedes me.
And what GW was saying is that I drive girls from the locker room and into my pants ( metaphorically {im talking about vaginal penetration})!
12. naas - December 16, 2009 2:32 PM
His name was Gordon Shumway...
I've seen so many captions for this pic before & thought that was GW before the surgery BEFORE the surgery if you catch my drift
13. cabbo - December 16, 2009 2:35 PM
@11 what GW's saying is that you pick them up from the locker room in your open-topped car and drive them up to make-out point. Boom, boom, boom shake the room. Tick, tick, tick, tick, Boom!
And later you get some barbecue pork and some bud, and you make them wear chewbaka masks. It gets messed up. Pretty soon they all get a job in the computer sciences department of dog the bounty hunter's show. Because he's the big bad dog, not you.

Does anyone know the origin of that picture? I've seen it a lot but never knew who it was or where it came from lol.
24. wolfdragon8211 - December 16, 2009 3:13 PM
what the fuck would you like us to do about it? Stop enjoying the things we enjoy so women can have their way? So I'm no longer allowed to enjoy my culture because its no PC and it scares women? Well fuck that.
25. Christopher - December 16, 2009 3:14 PM
As a male graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science on Saturday, I can safely confirm that those stereotypes are not true. I don't have THAT much memorabilia.
I also try to make a point to not work on computers in my underwear. But sometimes it can't be helped. It's not like I do it in public or in front of a camera!
26. Phrank - December 16, 2009 3:16 PM
WTF does the "female perspective" have to do with computer science?
Not one thing. That's what.
How on Urf would the "female perspective" change anything that has to do with programming or assembly?
It has no impact.

But I'll figure out a way to PEWPEWPEW her out of the competition.

34. Parent Madness - December 16, 2009 3:49 PM
Absolutely true. I met a girl in college who asked what degree I was. She said, as long as you're not in computer science, those guys are all geeks.

There is a cat at the bottom right of the picture =)
37. T - December 16, 2009 4:16 PM
I think all this means is that women are sexists who only want to work with hot guys. Like me.... oh, hold on...
Apart from that, the pic is clearly a photoshop job. You see, the shadows....
38. Jiakasuma - December 16, 2009 4:50 PM
Looks just like me
39. LameCake - December 16, 2009 4:56 PM
Non of these stereotypes keep me from pursuing my career in Computer Science. But then again, what I do can be done from home, away from the ogling eyes of guys like in the picture above, trying to start conversation on how the second Death Star was built and my thoughts. I'm not the sociable type anyhow.
40. Jaded Icon - December 16, 2009 5:06 PM
Strangely enough male geeks are more attracted to female geeks. Finding an attractive geek girl is a sacred quest that all young geeks set themselves upon....
41. Mih0 - December 16, 2009 5:10 PM
Wait, the geek stereotype was *NOT* supposed to appeal? Damn, I guess I have to trade Yoda, dota, halo and my soldering iron in for a husband and an oven. Someone ask June Cleaver if I can borrow her pumps and pearls...
42. Jaded Icon - December 16, 2009 5:40 PM
@ 41
Hellooooo! How r u doin?
(case in point)
43. Nikki - December 16, 2009 5:48 PM
Or women just rather do something else? How is that so hard to believe? Maybe the women theyre asking don't have any interest in computers in the first place. You've got to atleast have an interest first before considering going into the field. The women that WILL have the interest are the women that like the sci-fi things etc.
Anyway, I'd rather have a man work on my computer so I can hit on him furiously as he works on my mother board ohhh godd yeah just a little to the left... littttleee too.. NO TOO FAR! TOOO FARRRR!!!
44. wes - December 16, 2009 5:53 PM
Dear GW,
Where do you find all these ridiculous pictures of people? First, the awesomest picture I have ever seen in your ninja article - http://www.geekologie.com/2009/11/ninja_fail_overconfident_and_d.php

@40 I lucked out. My wife is smart as hell AND one of those women who looks pretty without make up. She had her BA in Biology and was finishing her masters in Education, at the age of 24, when I met her......... just sayin

As a lady science geek myself If I am lucky enough to stumble across a pack of geeks in the lab all I think is JACKPOT!!!! Smart is soooooo sexy... damn what was the point of this again...a negative stereotype? Not working officially turn on.
50. AmNotAMoose - December 17, 2009 12:33 AM
As a fellow female Computer Science major I do not understand why women would not want to major in Comp Science. I Loved it. Even if the stereotypes of computer games, science-fiction memorabilia and junk food are true, they were/are still fun as hell. Oh well, they are missing out.
51. InSaint - December 17, 2009 3:08 AM
The picture could easily be one of me. :-)
The study competely misses the point and just doesn't understand the background.
"There was a subset of women in the study who didn't view the stereotypical objects as masculine and geeky and aren't turned off by the associated office or classroom."
They chose to competely ignore that one little bit, instead of digging deeper into the subject. Becoming Computer Geek doesn't start with the college. It starts way back when you were just becoming a teenager. I wrote my first lines of programming code at 10. If you start fresh studying Computer Sciences in College the best you can do is become good at something that is done on a computer, but doesn't have much to do with the inner workings of the computer itself. You need that earlier experience where you battled some drivers, wrote some code, hex-edited a file and tryied to hack something, anything. And that's what hooked you on. That's what interested you in the field. And since I know girls like that, I also know they are pretty much into things like Fantasy Literature, Comics, Star Trek, Star Wars, Computer Games and empty Coke cans. Yep, they're Geek! Women can be that too. And some are verry, verry good at it! Those girls would study Computer Sciences in College because they are interested in the field and it doesn't matter even if that room had dead racoons in it.
On the other hand those young women who do not know where they're at and what to do with themselves, they are interested in the paycheck, not the field - they would run away at any mention of non standart thinking. Now why is that would be far more interesting and showing study.

Who cares who is dominated by and what perspective is given, as long as you enjoy doing what you do.
53. Pollen - December 17, 2009 10:05 AM
@4: That made me laugh, thank you.
@3: This is true. I play video games and I do definitely enjoy blood and guts and awesomely epic cinematic sequences and all the other stereotypical "video games are violent and bad" stuff. But being a girl, I am still drawn to cute stuff in games. Except gay pink stuff. That is for the gays. GAY.
I'm 20, I play video games, I like nerdy things, I love dinosaurs and zombies and STAR WARS. I'm of the female persuasion. And yet I'm not some morbidly obese chick in love with Hello Kitty who faps to characters from the FF series or Twilight.
Also, I'm going to school for game design. I'm maybe 1 out of 10 girls who go to my school (ITT) and 1 out of 3 who aren't cat loving FF fappers. And yes, there are those stereotypical nerds there who are fat and carry around their NeoGeo collection and have packages of Twislers in their back pockets.
But that didn't stop me from getting into a technical field!
Yeah some of the guys creep me out, but I'll put up with that no problem if it means I have a shot at working for Bethesda.
Best part: all those "weirdos" that they are saying drive women from technical careers make for great stories. You should hear the stuff that happens at my school and see some of the people who attend it. I LOVE IT.

Also, @44: L2internet.
55. j - December 17, 2009 12:06 PM
women wouldn't be any good at it anyways cause if we did things their ways and tried to figure out what a computer was 'feeling' when it crashed, nothing would ever get done.
56. Julianne - December 18, 2009 2:28 AM
It was not the geek stereotype that drove me away from the comp sci major (all the way to music, too), it was the goddamn smell. Ugh. If there is one thing that women could contribute to the field, it would be the attribute of not smelling that badly. Our comp sci building is like walking into an armpit.
But these studies are nothing new. What I'd like to know is why there are more male MUSIC majors than female. And why neuroscience and molecular biology are being taken over by females at my school (which is 50/50 m/f).

and people have to stop with the idea that everyone is always 50/50. you think the prisons are 50/50 men women? course not, they are full of dudes. that person caught sniffing the supermarket workers ass crack? a dude. so you gotta give the dudes the imbalance in tech fields, its only fair.

I'm a proud computer science student and... woman, OF COURSE.
That's bullshit because women who really care about computer science do not need to pay attention to weird computer geeks.
If a woman loves something she only needs her love to pursue her dreams! Not a fancy cool boy.
In addition, computer science courses have so many boys that we only have to pick one by one... there are a lot of choices, if you know what I mean... ahah :D
So... long live the computer science course, and that stupid stereotype :D

I'm a female who just so happens to be a computer science major, huge xbox360 gamer, and a star wars fan but yet i was a cheerleader, prom queen, an Rotc queen. I'm proud to be a computer science major and being a women in it just makes it all the much better!!.
What is weird though is I'm the only girl in the class and most of the guys in the class just stare at me. When I have a question they don't talk to me...
At least if there was another girl in the class, I might have someone to talk too.
