Dec 18 2009Modern Heroes: Man Takes iMac Into Panera Bread, Proceeds To Play World Of Warcraft

For those of you not in the know, Panera Bread is a fast-casual (don't blame me, I didn't make up the term) restaurant chain that offers free Wi-Fi to patrons. And this geezer is making the most of it -- he brought his whole iMac into the restaurant and began playing World of Warcraft! GO GRANDPA! Seriously, I'm calling the police -- we closed an hour ago.
Hit the jump for one more shot.

You Have Nothing to Apologize For, Panera Bread iMac Man [gizmodo]
Thanks to Jessi, who once brought a netbook into a restaurant to use the free Wi-Fi but accidentally threw it away with her tray.

A friend of mine who is a WoW addict explained it to me this way: "Yes I play as a female, yes I am a male, but if I am going to stare at my characters backside for hours a day it might as well be female."
7. sdfaffgsdf - December 18, 2009 8:12 PM

I think it's STOMPY's future self looking for some wifi, because his work's network blocks Geekologie, so he can comment on Geekologie in the year 2074............

i used to own an imac g5, and surprisingly enough they are pretty easy to tote around. especially if you keep the box it came in. it has a handle!
11. ObamaPacman - December 18, 2009 8:56 PM
He did it for the lolz?
The iMacs are actually pretty easy to carry around. Just pack 3 things (the power cord, keyboard and house) in a bag, you can then carry the iMac under one arm.

He's allowed to do it but it does go against the spirit of free wifi.
26. cabbo - December 19, 2009 6:56 AM
Maybe he's only there for, like, a half-hour. Wouldn't be that bad, really. Could just be waiting on his wife. Maybe his 25 year old girlfriend - we already know this guy likes to play it cool. Also, it sort of depends on what time it is - if the place is packed out, then yeah, that's not cool, but if it's just him, and a couple of other people, then there's nothing wrong with that.

Living in mom's basement has it's benefits until she dies in her Lazy Boy one day and doesn't pay the cable bill. Imagine the day he emerged and saw her mummified corpse in the chair.
Well, shit, off to Panera!

That's "BADASS"? A laptop would be fine, but bringing in your whole system is just embarrassing. Just grab your food and go back to your mom's basement.

That's nothing. Back in 1994 I kept a pizzabox NextStation computer and 17" CRT at my local cafe in Chicago. I'd go over with an external hard drive, get a table, order from the waitress, then run down to the cafe basement to bring the computer back up.
No internet connection though.
49. Enerius - December 21, 2009 1:47 PM

57. Chase - December 23, 2009 2:42 PM

@25 Well yeah, you got me, I can't really play like that, but I can chat and send messages with minimal effort, get things started before I get home, but who knows what we'll be able to do in a few years.
60. haeclark - December 29, 2009 7:58 PM
true wow players who are male and play females do NOT say its because they dont want to stare at a males butt...that's a LAME excuse! True wow players do so because they simply like that character better as female over male (such as ogars) Especially if they're in a group / guild...their capes cover their butt. The truth is they're just perverted or gay if a male plays a female and says it due to her butt!

I used to be a manager at panera bread. if this guy did this in my store i would be like WTF OLD MAN....but since i am an avid wow player, i would probably sit down and talk to him for a bit so long as he bought some food. i might even find out his realm and roll an alt later that night lol
