Dec 26 2009How Fanboys View Other Operating Systems

fanboys.jpg

This is a little graphic depicting how fanboys view their operating system compared to others. I thought it was pretty cute, especially the little Mac boy. Also, who else feels like they got Windows as viewed by Linux'd last night? Just me? Cool.

They have Windows fanboys?

Classic! Thanks for the tip on this one, it really made me laugh. I just wish there was a bigger version!

@3 welcome to the 21st century, how may I help you?

Hi, I'm Iris and I'm a PC.

This is great! Even though Mac and Linux suck huge walrus chub. I’m sort of a Windows man, I also have a sucky Mac, and a lame ass computer running Ubuntu. I think they are all great OS’s with their own great purposes.
In all seriousness…. huge walrus chub. Oh yea, I went there. BRINGZ IT ON MAC NOOBZ!!
Just kidding, I own a Mac
Just kidding, I don’t suck
Just kidding, I’m not kidding

Windows Man myself. Wont run any other system.

Absolubtly right, I don't know a lot of operating systems, but windows is nice but Mac RULES

http://ubergosh.mybrute.com

As someone who's tried all 3 extensively. I've always come back to windows. I would prefer to use Linux, but at the moment it is far too cumbersome to try and find ways to get certain programs to work for me on it. As for Mac, I felt my customization and OS tweaking was completely gone. Windows is a money gobbling monster of a company, but at least I can do whatever I want with their OS and it's easy to figure out how. Everything I would ever want to run on it does.

tl:dr They all suck in some way.

I hate THE FUCK out of apple!!

@ 10

Yeah, i guess you're right. They all suck some way, but the beauty of it all is, that people can choose what they really like.

I don't consider myself a "fanboy", i'm just most comfortable with linux on my hardware. As goes for other people, i hope they realize that they have a choice!

Windows/linux

OLD

the only reason that I stick with windows (which is the main os in my household) is that you can't pirate games on the other ones.... i can't wait until i can pirate games for linux.... then i will make the switch

very accurate depiction of a linux-fanboy like myself

Mac FTW

WTF is Linux?

Brilliant! Thought there should be some pretentious piece of minimalist modern art hanging on the wall behind the mac-mac and Steve Jobs doesn't look enough like Jim Jones. (FWIW I have/use/develop on all 3)

This is actually very true. :P I'm a PC (Or, Windows). I never even think about Linux, but to me, you can't do crap on Macs.

My operating system is free and can be transferred and/or replicated to as many computers as I wish and can run on any of today's hardware with more efficiency than the operating systems that were designed for it. Can your Mac or Windows do that?

@21 I hate you... The words personal computer are not interchangeable with windows.

@22 There are plenty of people with both windows and whatever the hell the mac uses who got it for free.

I fucking love my Mac. I do all my fucking youtube vids on it, compose music, and share pictures with fucking ease. Anyone who says otherwise is either a complete moron or a poor-ass loser who cannot afford a decent piece of technology.

@23 Free and piracy are not quite the same thing.

@25 The term free is not bound to being legal or illegal my friend.

windows/linux

ever run a mac server? oh yeah, that right ... sorry, it's just so cute (I'm a real computer too guys).

holy shit, every mac user says the same fucking thing, "artsy fartsy video blah blah". like video or music has never been composed on a pc. break open a mac sometime (shock) thar be sum pc parts n' shit in thar! macs are overpriced, frequently lack security in OS design and generally waste my time ...

broke pc = self-fix or IT jobs, broke mac = "send back to apple cause you're a fucking twit for wasting your money on crap hardware and a half-assed OS"

Fuck everyone, I use cards with holes and I'm virus free. I also have a fucking awesome internet connection and I can do everything else you people say you are able to.

Windows sucks
Linux sucks
Mac sucks (more)

Use card with holes it's like windows but more hardcore

@25 I have about 20 licences of various Windows versions wich Microsoft sold me for 0$. They are actually free legit version I got because I am a linux guy and Microsoft is trying to convert me. (Actually I got them from my school for free considering people in other programs pay the same fees as I do and don't have access to them)

I use windows on my gaming machine (its pretty much the only thing it is good at), all my other computers run linux.

I meant @23, sorry 25

@27

Linux = Unix-like (aka UNIX wannabe)
Mac OS X = certified UNIX

Yes, server admin is mostly domain of tinkerer that rather tweak a non fully functioning product rather get a ready-made solution, so many choose the Linux. However that doesn't mean Macs are not as capable.

@27

World Wide Web invented on Mac precursor
http://obamapacman.com/2009/08/world-wide-web-inventor-tim-berners-lee-uses-apple-mac/

i am a windows fanboy myself, i like this, especially the bottom two windows and mac pictures

@21, then you've clearly never used a mac.

@27

As you'd of guessed if you weren't a flaming moron, this is about OS, not hardware (all three OS' use similar, or the same hardware). What you;re quite obviously complaining about is your own lack of knowledge of how to get yourself around Mac OS (I run a Mac Pro at work, and trust me, there's no easier machine to get inside and pull bits off - macbook? No more difficult than any other notebook, imac? obviously a special circumstance, but still no more fiddly than any other all-in-one)

So calm yourself down and put your ignorance to one side and consider that this entire thread is about OS, not hardware; and If you had any serious knowledge about OS' you'd probably appreciate why OSX is the most advanced OS to date.

Mac server? Sure, I wouldn't run a mac server either ... no OS is a do-it-all-well interface. Want a server? Run Linux. Want a games rig? Run Windows. Want a machine for just about anything else? Run OSX. It's simple.

(and to quaff any ignorance on the subject of graphics/video/vfx work on macs, yes they are better at it, mostly due to proprietary graphics handling/real-time rendering that you don't get on windows; but I;d say the reason most creatives use Macs is because they appreciate intuitive, aesthetically pleasing design as much as they appreciate performance; and that's why I'm UX Designer that uses an octo-core Mac Pro; so suck it windows noobs)

PS.

I love the argument you see come out of the woodwork every now and then, about how people use windows cause they like lots of 'options', and 'customisation'; I've used both OS's all my life, and I wouldn't even vaguely suggest that windows is more customisable; but what may lead people to believe such an odd thing is that for every 1xDrop-down-box on mac os there's about 20xDrop-Down-Boxes in Windows. Don't let over-complexity trick you into thinking something is more tweakable.

And I'm not just goating people here; half of the new ease-of-use features that they've added into Windows 7 (and that are plastered over the whole London tube network; and littered through those irritating 'fly-me-somewhere-pointlessly' adds) have come from Mac. But you've still got DLLs, so sorry about that.

So I am just wondering why no one here has said anything about being able to duel boot on a mac. I run a mac pro with both windows and mac os installed. I use the mac os for serious work. ie web development and print design. I use windows for screwing around and playing games. I think this is one of the biggest advantages about owning a mac, also i think it shows the intelligence behind the developers at apple. maybe if windows wasn't so arrogant in thinking that they could design the "perfect Os" lol which i guess they think is vista, and acknowledge that different os's can do different things better, than windows wouldn't be such a big box of fail.

@37

Macs can also boot Linux too. =)

Yeah on TF2 I am usually top 3 in games of 24 or 32 when I play on my Mac, booting into windows. Even invited by multiple clans to do scrim.

MAC AS SEEN BY WINDOWS FANBOYS IS THE FUNNIEST.

Look at the enormous glee of that little boy!

I'm a graphic designer and after using macs for over 4 years when I was studying design and working my first design job I can safely say I will never use them again.
If anyone ever tells you you have to have a mac if you're doing design or editing work punch them in the chops because they're talking out their ass.
I use windows and very rarely have any issues. I can't comment on Linux as I havn't used it.

@40

Shilling FAIL.

The way I think of it is that windows is great for work, macs are great with cool extras, and linxs are inbetween. (half good half bad). I own a windows pc and I like how it works for my lifestyle. Ironically I wrote this on my I-touch and it took ten minutes. Get my point?

@42

Translation, Windows is good for slacking off, aka for looking busy.

If you stop touching yourself so much it won't take you 10 minutes to write a simple message.

Windows...cuz their magical :D

eh, I'm not too much o' a fan of Linux, Apples, Unix, Bananas...but I'm up for anything that works...

That's all wrong, Microsoft doesn't give reacharounds.

Hey, what has happened last night that is mentioned on the post?

How dumb can I be? This is the result of reading posts early in the morning :P

Very funny post and yet inspiring vindication from all side of the arguement. Good work GW, good work.

I like Linux, Ubuntu represent!

I hate how people say I am a PC (basically I'm Steve Ballmer's Bitch) but linux can be used on them too... I dual boot with Arch Linux and Windows XP on my main computer and my netbook is just Arch. I personally find Arch easier to use but that's because KDE 4 is just lovely. I wouldn't touch a mac with a barge pole but that's because I agree with the second view of it.

Linux is also clearly the most customisable os. Ubuntu now is easier to use than windows, and I wouldn't say that you really "use" a mac, It just displays pretty pictures. Anyone who actually tries Linux will prefer it.

Flamewar over. Linux is triumphant. :D

Also, mac is just as good at art as any other os.

Except minix.

No, wait, make that yes, minix.

Your all idiots. First i worked with Linux for 3 and a half years along side with BSD. Besides the packages being broken upon making and installing them there was also the dependency hell aka lack of librarys and other binary's to make the program run correctly or install correctly. BSD & Linux have a HUGE LACK OF driver support IE logitech webcam and kodak all in one printer. Their firewalls are a pain in the ass especially the iptables and yes i'm well aware of firestarter and guarddog and firewall builder BUT some of us aren't that good at programming firewalls, but still want good security without having to resort to being a computer nerd all the time. Not to mention all the kernel panics you would get and having to update the linux kernel every 4 days cause some idiot rookie patched another flaw with the kernel design. I'm not into games so i dont care much about that...thats what ps3 and wii and xbox are for.

Now for windows. Yes it blows. There webbrowsers suck the living daylights out of memory, constantly worrying about viruses and spyware and getting hacked even with the best firewalls out there. There's also the blue screen of death. Yes the firewalls and gui for firewalls are MUCH better designed than any linux distro. And windows does have a wider array of drivers for video cards, webcams, and all in one printers. But there security is terrible. Installing files is easy MUCH easier than any linux or BSD distro.

Linux and Windows BOTH have terrible coding. Linux gets coded by rookie amateurs who dont know what the hell their doing because there is no review board to look over and test the code out before throwing it to the general public...ie you get what you pay for with linux being open source. Windows coding sucks. Look at all the viruses and security holes it has. WIndows was NEVER designed around security it was designed around idiot morons who dont know how to use a computer.

Linux applications are crap at best. Once again free...get what you pay for.. What i mean by this is there was massive compatability issues with java working correctly on konqueror web browser (based on kde) for over a year before that ever got fixed. Flash was Not compatable on kde 4.0 web browser konqueror for over a year as well until that got fixed. And Flash still is NOT compatable AT ALL with BSD.

Windows lets face it it's a disaster from phishing sites to ppl stealing credit card numbers to bank accounts and other online personal information, to anti-viruses that don't pick up every virus thats out there...and from what i read there's over 1,130,000 viruses so far. Or at least the last time i checked. Windows can have just as many problems with linux can except there's no need to hardly ever use the terminal like there is for linux. Practically everything is driven through the terminal on a linux machine. You can't do jack without having to go into the linux terminal at least one time a day when you use linux ie like updating your system (which is done every 4 days cause of some stupid pointless coding fix).

Now onto Mac which is based off BSD. I'm not going to lie about this... i'm not to familiar with the security around mac. I'm not sure if mac comes with any pf filter or any iptables or ipchainmanagers or if they come with any Good gui based third party firewall or antivirus software. But i do know is you don't have to go crazy looking for drivers for mac like you do with bsd and linux.

And yes macs, linux, and bsd can catch viruses rootkits and other nasty stuff like windows can. i know cause right before i stopped using linux i caught a virus on mandriva YES AS A USER ACCOUNT not a root account!
And yes i have caught viruses on windows as well. Last week i caught 5 trojans and i had norton then i switched to zonealarm then i switched to kapersky. and yes i've used avg and avast and comodo. they all suck.

bottom line is all operating systems suck. there are no good ones. if anyone does find a good one let me know.

When i used the iphone it was a dreaded nightmare to use. When i had to update the operating system on it, i couldnt do it from any other computer except the one i registered it to, it kept erasing all my songs and phone numbers and all my other contacts, updating that piece of junk was more of a hassle than it was worth and more of a pain cause it would take over an hour or more to update correctly not counting all the hours wasted cause it was updating incorrectly giving some stupid error message on itunes.

And one other point i neglected to mention. Good luck finding any third party service repairman to come to your home to fix your computer with linux or bsd on it, or even mac on it. Cause most repairmen have NEVER worked with linux or bsd or mac and don't know a damn thing as to how to go about fixing a machine like that. And if you do find a repairman it will cost you $$$ big bucks to fix any technical problem you encounter. And believe me you will. Like getting sound to work on linux or on bsd without messing up. There's a reason why ppl don't work with linux or bsd and thats the simple main reason. Any help you need to fix your computer with linux or bsd has to be done through forums and some ppl on there are friendly and willing to help while others are complete snobs and jerks.

Also macs hardly ever honor their warrenty plan. When my iphone broke they refused to replace it even though i had the warrenty. My screen busted on it and parts of the inside busted as well. And the battery was defected and they REFUSED to replace a defected battery. WIthin the first month (not even) i got it the battery kept draining. i would have maybe 2 hours at best for it to be fully charged before going dead. Mac's DO NOT honor their warrenty on any product. Which means if your mac gets a virus (and yes someday it will get a virus) they will NOT fix your computer even with a warrenty on it. And they will flat out tell you to your face "Macs dont get viruses" which is a lie and hog wash and corporate propaganda to sell their junk.

oh and good luck getting voice chat to work while inside a yahoo chatroom and i dont mean in a regular pm i mean in an actual yahoo chatroom. If your lucky to get in you won't get voice at all. Why no sound drivers to support voice. Granted thats yahoo's fault not linux or bsd or mac, but it shows you what little yahoo thinks of other operating systems other than windows. I'm not sticking up for windows by any means but there are alot more better built programs out there than there are for linux.

and like i said there's always going to be compatability issues with sound, video drivers, webcam drivers, printer/all in one drivers when working with linux and bsd.

unfortunately as i'm typing this i'm using this dreaded windows. oh and did i forget to mention what kind of pain in the a$$ it is always having to purchase windows product keys for this lame operating system. Those product keys which cost $$$ big money and big money for all their other software and firewall purchases every year. Regardless of how much ppl say macs cost more to run than windows thats a lie cause windows will still cost you more $$$ in the end unless your one of those ppl who pirate their software. Your basically paying more money for lack of security on a windows machine.

oh and did i forget to mention how windows, linux, bsd, and mac (well mostly windows) is built upon 30 year old technology (or almost 40 year old coding). Yes most of the source codes in windows (even if it is closed source) and in linux,bsd, and mac are all based upon AT LEAST 30 year old source code that hasnt changed much over the progression of time. anyone that knows or at least familiar with source code knows this already

I've personally had experience with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, and they all have their shortcomings and good points, although I have to say that I definitely prefer Mac OS X aboive either Windows or Linux.

I admire the open-source efforts that went into Linux, and really like Ubuntu, but there are times when I'm just not up to fiddling about in the command line, installing applications with apt-get and that sort of thing. Windows can run most applications, and is sort of a standard, although I really think that it could be more intuitive, and less obnoxious with its warnings and 'security' features. Mac OS X feels the most intuitive and friendly to me, but that's just my perception, I suppose. I mean, it really isn't the end of the world if someone thinks that Windows or Linux is the best OS--that's why there *ARE* different platforms in the first place.

@51

How do you manage to get 5 trojans in a week? I never understood people like you. I own a windows, and have always preferred windows over other OS'. Honestly, I always sign in as an administrator, and use neither an anti-virus program or a firewall. I find they interfere with what I want to do. About once a year I will run a malwarebytes scan, and the most infections I have ever had, is 2. I download more than most people, and am on the internet most of the time. How you manage to get 5 trojans in a week, especially when you're claiming to be a tech-savvy person, is beyond me.
