Nov 2 2009Whittlin': Guns Carved Into Old School Desks

gun-desk-1.jpg

Ben Turnbull is a London-based artist that hates America (USA! USA! USA!) and whittles guns into old wooden school desks. I smell a detention slip!

Ben Turnbull is fascinated by the global dominance of American culture, and his works unsettling effects result from re-presenting the toys of our innocent youth in symbolic forms that reveal the shocking truths about war, death and guns in the world's most powerful country. Turnbull is a passionate critic of the contemporary American political system, and explains why toys are central to his work: 'Force fed on violence, abused by a controlling superpower and blackmailed through patriotism, the public are ultimately as disposable as the toys they once played with'.

Damn Ben, why don't you tell us how you really feel? Over a spot of tea with your queen while I whip your crumpet-munching ass! Jingoism FTW! I'm serious, meet me behind the pub.

Hit the jump for five more.

Thanks to Andy, who once carved his girlfriend's name into a school desk. And then, "is a bitch" underneath after she broke up him.

@1
i was first!

FAAAAIL you spellt his surname wrong in the top bit! Should be "TurnbUll" hah! I should be given a dinosaur or something for noticing that!

I bet he's 'passionate critic' of the Jews too...

The guns are awesome. The artist is annoying: calm down.

Just noticed the grenade.

+ 10 points.

Fire in the hole!

I bet he hates GAWD too!

@1 - 3 here's your reward stupid losers http://www.kellerpickem.com/4chan/heman.gif

My mom's vag was like SANDPAPER this A.M. habeeez!

Are you serious... guns... why didn't this dude carve a booby... FAIL!!!

I agree Hayley.

who cares about some douche scratching a desk the US government is building $9 million cyber security center

This is awesome and agree with the artist!! good work :o)

and @6....everyone is a passionate critic of the Jews!

Death, be all but proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful. I am Legion for we are many...

Neat concept but I disagree that American children today are "Force fed on violence". It's extremely difficult to find toy guns any more. When I wanted a set for my cowboy Halloween costume I had a heck of a time putting my hands on any kind of toy gun, let alone ones painted orange or green.

the artist is clearly one those stubborn English imperialist types who are still, rather pathetically, bitter that their country is no longer the superpower it once was [hundreds of years ago] and have a huuuge superiority complex, particularly where the US is concerned.

boo hoo, ben turnbull. get over yourself already. nice job on the carvings tho.

@18,oh yes that must be exactly why....what a d*ck!! We are bitter about something that ended many many years ago..ha!! He's saying something about TODAY's culture and find it so hard to understand why American's think we are still pissed of about not being a ruling Empire anymore...times have changed stupid!

What would this dumb douche know about " the truths about war, death and guns in the world's most powerful country" If he doesn't even live in the US?!?! Well I guess living in the country that has one of the highest populations of douche bag-ass hats in the world (England) could make anyone angry/ jealous about not living in the US. LET THE FLAME WARS BEGIN BITCHES!!

@10 is that.... is that unicorn love juice?
http://www.geekologie.com/2009/09/i_must_have_it_magical_unicorn.php

Armchair politics from an 'artist' who in all likelihood contributes little to the world around him. Get a real job and leave taking care of the world's problems to the only country willing to do anything effective about them.

Stompy You make trolls look smarter then you with a stupid ass comment like that -.-

I do love the grenade one though :D

Is the last one a lazer gun? Pew pew pew?

The funny thing is that toy guns are a pale imitation of what they once were, scrutinized by social groups and safety boards(even the mighty Megatron has felt the sting and been brought low!). Yet violent crimes involving guns are substantially higher than when kids were actually allowed to have realistic toy weapons. Answer: We need more toy guns, not less. Also Dodgeball. Kids turn out better when you hit them with a hard rubber ball repeatedly, it's science.

@22, you obviously do not know anything about what other countries contribute to the world, you are not doing any favours for yourself by being an egotistical ass, plus are you in government? Are you Obama? NO? Then shut the hell up.

By the way art is a massive contribution to all the world, everything you look at has been designed by someone and art is an international language.You sir are an idiot!

Carvin' = Cool.
Views = Assumptions.
Guns = Cool unless it's killing something cool.
Fake guns = Fun, and not likely to kill anything.
50 Cent = Bane of children's minds.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY TURNBULL!

woah, are you hatin' on america bro? Cause if you are I'm gonna kick your ass.

What, no Luger? Tsk.

real nice gun carving!!!!!!!!

watch please :)

@26,
Are you government? Are you Obama? Are you anybody? NO! I'm glad you think anything can be art. I could wrap my shi t in tin foil, put fish hooks on the end and sell them to the Queen of England as art. I'm sure she would buy them too. What else is the royal family good for other than creating a false feeling of supremacy for an inferior country.

@33 erm no, for one I did not say anything can be art, in fact I totally disagree with that. Plus I did not mention the royal family and I even agree that they are pretty much pointless. But to call England an inferior country....that is laughable it really is. What I do not understand is why you are getting so defensive, it's not as if I am 'dissing' the USA. In fact America has produced some good musicians.

P.S I am somebody or else you would not be reading what I have to say. I am alive, I am human therefore I am someone.

@34 I think he meant it wouldn't matter if you live or die but in the long run the entire human race is useless. won't matter one bit when we go extinct. lol make the best of it

Who isn't, Jordan?

Also, giggle at 18 imposing their own meaning. Some insecurities abound.

I don't think what the artist is trying to say has anything at all to do with the American independance. Whilst I disagree with the hating Americans remark it's true that their culture has become pretty wide spread...and it is fascinating.

@22

Erm...didn't America jump on the world war 2 band wagon 20 minutes before it finished?

Oh, and that big japanese gunship you had trouble with at pearl harbour? We built that. It was an awful tragedy but I think thats kind of proof that british power isn't exactly powerless.

Oh and free health care; now that's awsome.

He is absolutely right, did it hurt your pride somehow GW? (What pride?)

He's not saying toy gun cause violence. It's symbolic. "The public are ultimately as disposable as the toys they once played with." Not "Toy guns create killers". I agree that it is fascinating the U.S. has stayed a global power after its continuing failures, and that the old Bush regime seemed pefectly happy to dispose of it's troops for little to no apparent gain for anyone, but I think Obama has begun to make some changes in not only the way the country thinks and functions as a whole, but in the way the world views America.
And I'm not hating on America, I actually loved the U.S. when I was there and can't wait to return, but it's national problems are far more highly publicised throughout the world then any other country because of the global position they hold.

that's hawt stuff, I'm diggin the lazar gun @ the end :D

@34.
I'm getting defensive? I'm not the one who pissed my diaper at the first insult/ truth that happens to be against this English "artist". I'm just saying I'm tired of people who think they have something useful to contribute to the world and then turn out to be full of shi t. "Wow, I don't like the US so I'm going to carve some wood." Holy shi t give him a Nobel Peace Prize!! I don't like "political" douche bags who are all talk, so I'm going to carve a monkey into a table and call it art and say the monkey is a representation of this guy's intelligence.

P.S.- Just because you are alive and human does not mean you are someone. Sure you exist, but that's not saying much.

@41

Yes, you are.

I bet you're the kind of person so blinded by patriotism that you're unable to have a sensible conversation about the pro AND cons of your country of birth.

Oh, hold on. That's exactly what's going on right now. Grow up. America isn't the be all and end all. I should know, I live there.

And no, I'm not leaving, the girls are easy AND insecure.

@41 and 34

Both of you are getting a little too out of hand and defensive. Fact is none of you are right. Yes America may not be at its greatest time. But thats ok. It doesnt give America the super douche of the year award. Fact is all countries go through shitty ass times. Read through history. Britian had its dumbass moments trying to get involved with everything and eventually they shrunk their bussiness to themselves. Now America is. Understand your history before you make any accusations. History repeats itself. Only difference is the people change and the technology change. Read the Fourth Turning if your intelligent enough to actually study this stuff. (Not saying you arent).

Now on the other side. I do agree partly with what each of you are saying. Its nice of him to express himself. But he needs to realise that he cant link art to government views or it becomes politicized and and turns into something it shouldnt be. People who create Good are do so out of compassion. Not hate. Sure some artists may be good but like I said. Add corrupt views or anger into art and its value drops.

39 - For The WIN.

The carvings themselves are interesting. Lambasting American culture is off-putting to me. Simply because we are the most visible, doesn't make us the most vile. We have what can simply be compared to a "celebrity status" in the world. When we do something great, everyone sees it; when we do OK, no one notices; when we fail, everyone has something to say about it.
Being the biggest dog on the block has it's perks, but being the biggest target is the other side of the coin.

PS - The Royal Family is there as a tradition and for mostly PR an charitable works. The people accept this, the Royal Family accepts this. The only people who get confused about that fact are the same people who complain about other countries citizens criticizing America... Irony, it's funny...

Blah blah blah....

I would've done an ak47.

@ 45:

Irony is an outcome which is the opposite of what you would expect, retard.

I'm a real American! I fell out my mother's vajayjay on American soil, thus I will kick anyone's ass who says America is not the greatest in the world, although I will stipulate that I don't require a reason or any proof. USA! USA!

Patriotism, especially blind patriotism, is ridiculous. It is the worst excuse I have ever heard for violence. I live on this bit of soil, you live on that bit of soil, now prepare to die. Sometimes it's because we want your area of soil, and sometimes it's just because we want everyone on your bit of soil to behave like everyone on our bit of soil. As long as we keep up this in-fighting, we will never be able to unite to face the real enemies - Robots and aliens. Also, alien robots.

I think pictures of kids with toy guns would be a more adequate visualization of the concepts he wants to communicates.

Children with toy guns playing at shooting each other scares the solid gold bejesus out of me. With thier dead eyes, moronic drolling faces, ape like motions and screeching dog noises. They grow up to be the hyper fag hating cyber rasist xbox live addicted douchebags of the future.

I would never let my kids play with toy guns. Nunchaku on the other hand I require full mastery buy the age of 5.

@41 you know nothing about this artist so don't pretend you do. You know nothing about me so don't make assumptions that I'm not 'anyone'. Read over 42's comment again.

angry american guys waving with their big Michael Bay flags,, just stop beeing so damn narrow-minded, many of u are like old bitter farts,, maybe time to find out how the real world is working and stop thinking middle east is australia on the map and things like that. Sure I love much about the states but so many are so damn angry on things they don´t understand or think they understand just because the newspappers says so.. from now I will stop read the comments on this site, I love geekologie but stupid angry people is always turning me off, I have always been the one that have defended usa when people around me says they hate that country but these days I am just quiet beacuse I dont have the energy to defend something that is filled with so many people that just are to retarded for the human race

@37 if it wasn't for the US joining WWII, then it would of lasted a lot longer than the "37 minutes" we were involved. Maybe if you guys could of done it yourself, we wouldn't of needed to get involved in the first place.

God, I hate hippies.

@48 Don't forget zombies!!!

@52, America had brought themselves into the war by suppling goods to China whilst they were fighting the Japanese. The Japenese then attacked Britsh and American holdings thus we (along with other Western countries) declared war on Japan.

@ 52

It was a ''world war''. Both sides were pretty much balaced. After YEARS of struggle, poverty and death; anyone wanting to join in would have been able to tip the scales.

Hell, the vatican could have sent the popemobile and an honor guard through the trenches and that would have helped.

@42,
I didn't say that America has no faults, far from it. For example, about half of the US is populated by mindless fools, such as yourself and shellshell. That is a con for sure. Again, I just think people who think they have something important to say should at least have some background on the subject. The guy doesn't even live in the US yet he somehow has something to say about "the toys of our innocent youth.... that reveal the shocking truths about war, death and guns in the world's most powerful country." What would he know about our youth in our country? Did he type "american youth" into Wikipedia and accept that as fact? I guess so because now he thinks he is an "expert" on the subject.

47 - Read the ENTIRE definition before you attempt to make yourself feel smarter... Hypocrisy is in fact, ironic... Retard.

6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.

If this artist is an ass for making a piece of art about the moral state of America, then the American film and television industry in large is a gigantic ass for using the British as villains in almost anything...

Closet Nerd. You say "the US joining WWII" as if you yanks did something honourable coming to the rescue or something.
You didn't chose to join, Europe could have rotted under Hitler as far as America was concerned.
You were FORCED to "join" when the Japs attacked Pearl Harbour, and then HITLER DECLARED WAR ON AMERICA to show solidarity with Germany's ally the Empire of Japan. And seeing as the French and everyone else in western Europe had already surrendered, this little island fought alone for years.
You should be grateful we had, or there would have been no launch platform to retake the continent as we both did together at the end.
I'll also add that we took 3 beaches on D-Day, you took 2.
Typical arrogant ignorant yanky tw@. Learn your history. F**kface.

Well, we saved your Royalist lovin' asses the last time. Maybe the next time, instead of preventing you from having to speak German, we'll just allow you to speak Farsi, or some other Arab bull-shitte 'cause you won't/can't defend yourselves then either. Maybe your guy can carve you some wooden guns to defend you from the coming muslim takeover of your little island.
