I know David Thorne, and all of these email exchanges do actually happen.
Nothing on his site is manufactured, it may be the same joke over and over again with the only difference being a slightly different circumstance, but it does happen. Just sayin.

I can assure you that this story is real! I have never met the author of this post, but my husband knows Simon Edhouse. In fact my husband almost ended up working for him, but he said the guy was too unfocused and he was like a kid living in lala land. When I was sent this link I laughed so hard I had tears.

@ 37. It really isn't that unlikely. Especially in Adelaide, in small Australian cities people know most people. David Thorne and most of his little playmates on his website are from Adelaide. So if 36. is from Adelaide there is every chance she knows this dude.

I've known dreamers and schemers just like this Simon - worked for a few in fact. Everything they think of is going to make 'millions'! Everything also starts up with zero capitol and anyone that is needed to get it off the ground is 'an idiot' for not donating their time for the 'definite' profits. This is how I would have LOVED to respond to a few of the stupid requests I've had over the years, alas, I am a little more polite with the decline of their 'offers'.

David Thorne is easily on a par with the 'The Letters of Henry Root'. I particularly pissed myself reading the correspondence between David and the Principal of his son's school (re. suspension of IT privilages)

I feel this guy. I own a web design and marketing company with my partner (business end, not smart enough to program) and people are CONSTANTLY asking my partner and his programmers/graphic designers to do shit for free! He is too much of a nice guy so all requests go through me. Most of the time they are shocked that I would charge them for logos and site designs. I try to explain it as politely as I can but I just want to tell them to GTFO!

First point is, although really really funny... the so called email conversation that David put up on his site, was totally constructed by David. - This has been proven. I asked Cory Doctorow to ask David which email address he had used to send these emails to. (because I can get a log from my ISP of all the emails I received on those days) - David’s answer to Cory came in the form of one of his fake emails with an expanded header from a ‘de Masi Jones’ email address. (where we both worked together in 2002/03) In other words, he is claiming that that he had received them from, and sent them to “Simon’s deMasi Jones email address”… I left de Masi Jones 5 years ago.

By the way the Wikipedia page on David has his birthday wrong he's wasn't born in 1972, he was born in 1968.

Last point, David is a comic genius... just beware never to become his friend, because the jokes don't seem so funny when they are based on fabrications and come from someone you have always been kind and supportive to. (and incidentally do not owe any money to)

...and also as far as I can tell, comment 36 seems a lot like a comment that was deleted from BoingBoing, and was almost certainly written by David himself.
