Oct 1 2009Looks Safe To Me: A Power Line Bridge

This is a picture of Philippine residents using power lines as a bridge in wake of the recent Typhoon Ketsana (bitch). EDIT: It is sad and Geekologie wishes everyone affected the best. Plus jetpacks.

Please please don't turn this into a joke.
The picture alone may be funny you some of you guys, but this is no 'scene from Indiana Jones'.
People are dying here, and if they're not dead, their houses are probably gone, their lives as they knew - gone.
Sorry to be a party-spoiler, but let's preserve whatever humanity's left in us and show some compassion here.

a fat guy gets on the lines, power goes on, wire snaps, all people in the water get electricuted...sounds harsh but I call it happens by this time next week
11. Tennist0 - October 1, 2009 9:42 PM
if they needed a real safe place, look to the left, they are sitting on something thats either floating or grounded, that is a good excuse why wire climbing is a bad idea
12. Paolo - October 1, 2009 9:49 PM
you think the power will be on in a week? it took months in the US dipshit. Writch you are clearly retarded and you should reinact a drowining in your bathtub.

it's obvious who among us does not give a damn about other people and their well-being. i think making fun of people during an obviously tragic time is low.

Its perfectly safe to do when the power isn't out I've been doing for a while now
22. perenelle - October 1, 2009 10:38 PM
During this time, the national power provider shut off electricity in most areas, which is probably why they're not getting electrocuted.
Typhoon Ketsana has been the worst storm experienced by Filipinos in years. Many places are underwater and around 200 people have drowned. To make things worse, Typhoon Parma is on its way to the country.
23. randomguy - October 1, 2009 10:48 PM
I have another comment, I wonder why this site never made fun of Hurricane Katrina. That was a tragedy right? This writer tries way too hard to be funny.
24. Robot - October 1, 2009 11:09 PM
it's because it's not shoved in his face constantly.
Katrina was constantly on the news. everyone was making waves ( excuse the pun)
but since the western news only seems to mention it in passing.
and celebs aren't making any telethons.
and major tv programing isn't getting interrupted
everyone can still watch they're little house, lost or whatever bullshit people watch these days.
it wont draw people out of their self centered little lives.
it might as well be on another planet.
shit makes me sad.

29. Tala - October 2, 2009 12:09 AM
Seriously? How is that funny? I have a lot of family back there. Luckily most of them live far enough from the flooding that they're not in serious danger, but there are many people who are in trouble.
Did you make jokes right after 9/11 happened? I don't think so. Why should this be a joking matter?
30. Duurn - October 2, 2009 12:14 AM
Just chill guys. The author didnt really say anything bad. Also some people really found people using electrical wires as bridges amusing. Stop being so overly sensitive...
And for the record im one of the people affected by this storm...
31. Anne - October 2, 2009 12:23 AM
to put things in perspective Hurricane Katrina dumped Hurricane Katrina dumped over an inch of rainfall in Louisiana for 3 hours and another 0.5 inches per hour over the next 5 hours on August 29, 2005. While Philippine typhoon 'Ondoy' or Ketsana dumped an average of 2.24 inches per hour for over six hours. That is more rainfall the Philippines experience in a month's time. And while Katrina victims had somewhere to go after the storm (ie other states) we here in the Philippines have nowhere to go since most of our evacuation sites are also underwater. and city by city by city is also underwater. We have not even reached A LOT of the people who are still trapped in their houses with no food, water and electricity and have stopped relief operations in the meantime to gear up for the coming of another super typhoon (and another typhoon after that). So to the people who just don't care, please just don't make any comments if you have nothing really significant to say. EVERYONE here is stressed- physically and emotionally- from rescue and relief efforts and we do not need to hear and see insensitive , a*sholic comments from you.
FYI: typhoon ketsana is, to this day, the worst recorded typhoon in the Philippines. And we are no strangers to super typhoon.
32. Anne - October 2, 2009 12:29 AM
another FYI: the electricity in the areas affected by the storm were shut off to prevent any more tragedies from happening , so the people using those lines were quite safe.
33. Dennis - October 2, 2009 1:01 AM
Look more closely at your picture. The power lines are actually higher on the poles than the people. You can see the transformer and the power lines coming off from it over their heads. They are most likely walking across telephone and data lines. So neither funny nor true.

Well damn, so many butthurt people taking things personally - as if they were stuck in the flood themselves. I live in the Philippines myself and was even stranded at uni over the weekend when the storm was at its worst, but this post does not offend me in any way. I admit the post isn't funny, but it's not insulting either.
If any of you still insist on being oversensitive douchebags, you should go see what UglyYubin on twitter and Jacque Bermejo on facebook have to say - now THOSE are real insults.
54. Roxie - October 2, 2009 8:45 AM
People. I find the article sorta funny. I said SORTA. I am not that insulted. Sure, it hurts when people make comments like what we've seen above, but it's stupid to start flaming people over a picture.
@Elaine: UglyYubin really did insult a lot of people. My friends didn't even want to contribute to her site, so they passed around a screenshot of the tweet.
Just because you're sensitive doesn't mean you're oversensitive. Tons of people lost lives, family and more to that flood. Just respect people, and their views. And if you're going to say something, please do it in a polite way. Think of it this way: "It takes one to know one." and "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
55. Elaine - October 2, 2009 8:54 AM
Hey Roxie, I'm inclined not to take someone who uses "profoundlyshallow" as a username seriously. And you're what, 16? Oh wow, credibility WAY DOWN THE DRAIN.
You're right about the flaming part though, especially for people who seem to think the best way to lecture people is through quotes.
56. lee harless - October 2, 2009 9:00 AM
hmmmm... i kinda liked this one. i thought it was very informative.
57. Reez - October 2, 2009 9:01 AM
As part of the Filipino community, I believe that we have experienced one of the worst tragedies during the rampage of Ketsana..
I think that this blog post didn't really mean to humor the tragedy, but the people who tried to make it come off as a joke really did. It's just sad that just because you're reading a blog which throws around jokes like this easily, you think you can just make it seem like it's nothing compared to what the US have experienced. Just because it's a third world country, doesnt mean you have the right to undermine the tragedy. People have died.
I'm sure if it happens to you, you wouldn't think of it as a joke. Anyways, God Bless. (And no, not you, "Your God", you're an ass.)

63. Cup-O-Jesus - October 2, 2009 10:50 AM
@6 "Any tragedy isn't a laughing matter"
Depends on who you are. Jews usually turn tragedy into a laughing matter. It's how we cope. Also, to all you haters in here today, if you don't think this is funny, stop reading comments and go to another site. You are not the internet police. (that honor fell to my father) You will never CONVINCE people to "be more compassionate" You will however convince them to harass you once they realize you are annoyed.
For the record: people performing a tightrope act on power lines over a large body of water during a rainstorm?
Yeah, it's a little funny.
64. Heather - October 2, 2009 10:51 AM
No, not a joke. GW just posted it because it's interesting. Perhaps in a morbid way, but interesting nonetheless. Sad, yes. Funny, no. I think we all agree on that. But still worth looking at.

NO HEATHER, WE DON'T ALL AGREE
The funniest part about it is that it makes you sad. That and your weepy vagina. Not that it makes your vagina sad, just the fact that it's weepy. Or is it sad? I don't want to make sexist assumptions because I don't own one. Can vaginas cry? Wow, sounds like the new book Opra is pushing this month.
"And welcome back. I have with me the author of a book rapidly climbing the New York Times bestseller list, 'Can Vaginas Cry?' Welcome to the show Jan.
Thanks Okra, it's great to be here.
So tell me Jan, does your vagina cry?
(chuckles) Well, in a way, yes. And yours does too.
Facinating!"

Do you need a tissue for you vagina?
69. Cup-O-Jesus - October 2, 2009 12:09 PM
@67 Possibly if it was actually funny, and not just trolling. (but honestly, probably not) However, in the USA so many people like to crap on you have the right to be as mean and unfunny as you want to be.
What I wouldn't do is cry like a leaky penis because you hurt my feelings. The internet is tough, wear a cup. Take your best shot, give as good as you got, and if you are beaten, go home lick your wounds and come back in the game. BUT YOU DON'T COMPLAIN 'CAUSE YOU GOT A HURTS-A-BOOBOO FINGER.
If you don't like the game, STOP PLAYING.

1. People are lying about residing in the Philippines

2. The situation is significantly less hazardous than previously reported
or
3. Geekologie is VERY interesting.
or
4. Power lines are down but internet is still viable and instead of contacting loved ones etc, folks are using their meager battery power to check Geekologie ie COMMITTED FANS OF GEEKOLOGIE!
High praise indeed.

Hello, I'm a Korean.

Obviously, twitter author is NOT Korean, author is a Japanese who pretend to ugly Korean, and who want spread anti korea sentiment to world.
We love filipino. So, don't fall dirty Japanese trap.
All people. Most of the nastiest posters are Japanese pretending to be various different nationalities. Remember that. Japanese are the worse scums of the earth. We hate their guts too.
Think about it.
According to common sense,
if you are filipino, you want filipino singer name as "ugly"?
if you are filipino, you want post "ugly" image of filipino singer?
if you are filipino, you want post "i am a filipino, I want xxxx country person are die" write racist and dirty comment to other foreigner?
All of This made by Anti-Korea Japanese troll.
And, Korean don't have ANY single antagonism to filipino.
Why Korean write such comments? Any reason? Absolutely Nothing.
Only Japanese racist troll who pretend to Korean, want made this trouble.
I'm a Korean, if he/she is a real Korean, We 100% apology to filipino.
But, I really really think that author is NOT Korean. Most Korean don't act like that.
This is made by Anti-Korea Japanese racist troll who pretend to Korean.
We love filipino.
