Oct 19 2009BOOM!: Massive Underwater Mine Detonation
This is an old-ass video of somebody's (the French's?) Navy detonating an underwater mine. The picture quality is pretty poor but the explosion is amazing and I'm not afraid to admit I got aroused. Twice. Plus I love how at the very end they realize their boat's gonna be capsized by the resulting wave and start going apeshit. Talk about poor planning -- that's something I would do! But it's cool because I'm a blogger and not a Navy.
Thanks to Trogdolorian, who plans on traveling back in time to seize and burninate a castle.

That's like the New Haven Coliseum demolition I went to. Whoops! People shouldn't have been standing on the I-95 onramp. Watch the police officers:

@1 "an navy"? stupidass - GWs got it right.... quit skipping school
I didn't know France even had A NAVY let alone a battleship. After seeing something like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhriIQs805s - one has to wonder how safe arming France really is

Hey look, honestly, do you really think the French army would count down in English ?
Really ?
Come on.

I dont think they are afraid of the wave. I think its a steamwave comming towards them.
They are obviously canadians!

later on corpses of various animal species float to the top.
They should at least test these things in non-occupied spaces, unless this is some spiffy way the navy catches it's meals on the go. :1

NUKE THE WHALES!
17. David S - October 19, 2009 1:56 PM
I'm pretty sure there are sound waves they can throw in the water to deter fish and other creatures from staying nearby.

The ship is not going to capsize. The last words heard are "fermez les portes !". (Shut the doors !). The camereman is concerned about getting over-wet since a salt water shower is closing in.
19. naas - October 19, 2009 2:44 PM
@17 I'm not so sure they bothered taking the effort or time to do that. Besides fish can be pretty stupid (see: fishing) so emitting sound might attract more of them

Fish have much better hearing than humans do, so if they did try to deter them with noise I guess it would work. I very much doubt they did though. Fish and chips tonight lads!

I was present at a similar mine detonation when I was in the navy. Afterwards there were so much dead fish floating around, you could feed a village.

Are we sure its a mine. At some point after the explosion it looks like a jet stream passed over the target area. Could be wrong though....

Sorry for my previous message : never try to write something while a stupid 12 year old boy is sitting next to you ! (who is actually 24 and wants to have fun with your computer)
Anyway... i was just trying to say that GW's video IS French... but Naas's one is obviously Canadian... that is DIFFERENT ;) They speak French with a funny accent... i love it! ;) J'adore votre accent chers Québécois !
And i don't care if it's a mine or not because as GW said "it's cool" :)

Geekologie writer:
I found out the whole story on this a while back. They were detonating a mine, but what they didnt know was that they did it on top of a bunch of WWII unexploded depth charges. That was the black muck at the end of the explosion. They did not intend for it to be that big.
