Oct 15 2009Abe, Nooo!: Gallery Of Geek-ily Defaced Bills

Because it's illegal and I don't do anything illegal, I've never defaced currency or put pennies on a train track. Nor have I looked at another man's junk while standing at a urinal. Or have I? I totally have -- I do it often!
Peekaboo.

that automatically makes each of the bills worth more! Screw defacing, I'd pay 30 for the Spartan 20! This is how America can raise the value of the U.S. dollar and dominate the world market! Breaking the law!!!

Hey Geekologie,
1. These are mine, thanks for reposting, but could you please add a link to The Refacing Government Tender Set on flickr or my main site, SecretUndergroundHeadquarters.com?
2. These are almost illegal, indeed one cannot deface money with the intent of taking it out of circulation. However, I am a college student (read: POOR) that can barely afford food and gas money let alone have a stack of money with comic book characters drawn on them just sitting around.
3. Yes, I haven't done any $50s or $100s (read: POOR).

The penny defacing machines are legal because it is legal to deface currency with the purpose of turning it into jewelry. Most of the penny machines I've seen have the legal statute written on them.
I am not sure whether the law applies to art.

What is #14? I can't decide if it's Tanookie Mario or Catman....lol
20. Tawmie - October 15, 2009 11:31 AM
Haha! I have seen these before! I love them! That Joe D! guy has a photobucket ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/joefxd/tags/defaced/ ) with all these on it. GENIUS! Though you should probably link to him, GW.
and to add more to the penny crusher debate, there was one in the Tyrell Museum in Alberta Canada (I am canadian) and in the penny jar they had American Pennies. I suppose 'cause crushing our own would be illegal. :D

Hilarious? Really? I can't imagine anyone busting a gut laughing at these things, let alone chuckling or even exerting the energy needed for a mild giggle. They are "unh. Neat, I guess." at best.

@ Oops
Heck yes it is. I do that to all my old fivers.
30. Dream - October 15, 2009 1:25 PM
My favorite is the TRON one, thats hilarious, im gonna try that. And gonna make a joker one for my little brother because hes obsessed with the joker; i think my little brother is gay. *locks room door to keep him out*
I dont have a problem with gays, but the joker is a guy with way too much makeup, and my little brother loves that. O.o freaky.

If the TMNT were founders on our money, there would be no speak of this zombie apocalypse or robot overlords. I guess there might still be Triceratons from another dimension, though.
36. pawnman - October 15, 2009 3:01 PM
People always seem to think this is illegal. It isn't. Neither are the penny smashing machines. The "defacing money" law only applies to cases of fraud, i.e., trying to turn a $5 into a $50. Things like this are obviously not fraudulent, and therefore are completely legal.
I, for one, particularly liked the Mario and Riddler ones.
37. tony gallo - October 15, 2009 3:23 PM
darn so we were allowed to melt those pennies in metal shop?!

These are NOT illegal.
Learn your laws before trying to proclam that they are illegal.
