Sep 22 2009Mad Scientist: We'll All Be Immortal Cyborgs In 20 Years. GW: In 19 Years I'm Offing Myself

Some crazy-ass jive talking nutjob (61-year old scientist, Ray Kurzweil) is convinced we'll have the technological capabilities and biological know-how to all be loveless immortal cyborgs within 20 years time. Uh-oh.
He says theoretically, at the rate our understanding is increasing, nanotechnologies capable of replacing many of our vital organs could be available in 20 years time.
Mr Kurzweil calls his theory the Law of Accelerating Returns. Writing in The Sun, Mr Kurzweil said: "I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies' stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing. Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever."If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening.
First of all, The Sun is not an accredited scientific journal. And secondly, I prefer real sex to virtual reality any day. Trust me, it's not all that (I once tried making out with the television but she only shocked my tongue).
Immortality only 20 years away says scientist [telegraph]
Thanks to greenman and mystrb, who are already gonna live forever through their written words (in bathroom stalls).

As long as my bionic limbs make that "na na na na na" sound when I lift a car then I'm ok with it.

so you dont know who Ray Kurzweil actually is...
you pathetic dumbass
9. captainhunter - September 22, 2009 3:34 PM
Raymond Kurzweil is a fascinating person.
Scientist first, writer second, all around genius.
Pick up The Age of Spiritual Machines, read it, and then take a look at what year he wrote it. If Ray says it, he's backing it up with SCIENCE!

Considering that I'm not living on the moon, flying my car around or riding sweet ass pink hover boards I have to think this wont come to be either. The future is usually a huge disappointment. I want my god damn deathboard, It's almost 2010 for crap sake! No instead we have .... the iphone....

Old news.... STOMPY, naas & I already touched upon this (i.e. humans becoming extict and the exponential increase in technology)
I'm sure the scientist just read our posts from yesterday... and slightly elaborated on it.

Is it coincidence that he thinks we'll figure out how to stop and reverse aging JUST before he is going to die of old age?
Kurzweil may be a genius but he's also terrified of death and desperately hoping to live long enough to get out of it. His "predictions" are not based on facts they're based on a hope for eternal life.
This isn't science, it's his religion.
14. Calabasa209 - September 22, 2009 3:47 PM
i would like a bionic eye that can see in infrared, oh and some xray vision
15. you know who - September 22, 2009 3:59 PM
xray vision would suck, just see other peoples bionic body parts and silicon boobs and butts and fake penis
16. you know who - September 22, 2009 4:00 PM
oh i forgot, if you need x ray vision you probably shouldnt be aloud to touch a woman anyways, get your ass out of the gene pool / people that can get some swim time.

I see what your saying. In 19 years you will be the first cyborg ever to be created.....or you'll be some mental patient talking about crazy events that are about to happen. No one will believe you and we want the real you to write for Geekologie. Dont get me wrong it would be cool if you guys created a robot to write for you....but whats the fun in that. The robot isn't going to find humor the way you do..... at least lets hope not.
Hasta La Vista, BABY!!!

Uh, I actually read a column about this in the New York Times' Science Times. His theory isn't as crack-pot as most people might think, even though the virtual sex thing is somewhat silly.
23. Rah - September 22, 2009 5:34 PM
Yea just like how we should have had flying cars in 2000. This is Ham
24. Robyn - September 22, 2009 5:54 PM
The Sun is just going to pick out the most sensational parts of his theory, pay no attention to them.
Here's a video that I made like a year ago for school that explains his whole Singularity deal, which is basically a quick summary of the first chapter or two of his book, The Singularity is Near:

Right about where the music starts to change to a different song is where I deviate from Kurzweil and start using other sources.
I'll agree that he's afraid to die and perhaps his predictions are slanted because of this, but there's plenty of scientists out there with similar theories. The when and the consequences of the Singularity vary between them, but overall this is far from being just Ray on his soap box.

cybernetics is overhyped. who wants to have to replace our need for food with a need for fuel? our grooming for sluffing off rust? sinking in water? having to obey magnetism? regular viruses for computer viruses? virtual sex instead of actual sex?
everything has a downside. i don't see any upside to trading the human condition for the cybernetic condition. it doesn't take away problems, it just changes the problems to different ones. make a leap in gerontology and not cybernetics, if you want to live forever. trade the cybernetics for biochemistry.
26. aww yeah - September 22, 2009 7:51 PM
Animals, too? These damn hamsters keep dying of old age at about 3 or 4 years. If I could get just one to live forever I could save about $8 every few years. Well, in 20, it'll probably be more like $18 adjusted for inflation. $45 if we keep printing money at the current rate.

Que mierda!
28. Wrathmanifested001M - September 22, 2009 11:54 PM
Really this is likely to happen and all in the next 20 years its called the "Singularity" Where biological understanding and technologic understanding and ability are so advanced we can do bla bla bla I don't get into it.
But what I do kinda care about is why the hell did "Virtual Sex" that is like so the last thing on my mind with the future I'd rather have REAL WOMEN!!!
This guy is a nut hahaha.

What drives most innovation is demand. If there is enough money and talent concentrated on one human condition than progress will be made. It is possible to reach a level of progress with one or the other but money, talent and demand are needed to maximize the possibility of breakthroughs.
That being said, who would like to donate the virtual sex fund?

Mortality is the only thing everyone has in common. It isn't a solution that feeds demand. It's a solution that changes the very meaning of what it is to demand. It is an inevitable discovery, but one that goes against the rule.
33. Jaded Icon - September 24, 2009 6:57 AM
@ 33
You sound like a retarded monk....
"(mortality) isn't a solution that feeds demand" - First I'm sure you meant Immortality. Second, tell that to old people, or people with terminal illnesses. Just cuz your 17 and picked up a "How to Zen" book doesn't mean you have the answers to life. Of course this is just me being an *sshole so you can take it with a grain of salt.
34. Tardis - September 24, 2009 11:20 PM
At least hold out to see if the Doctor shows up. I mean if a master race of cyborgs take over humanity and remove all emotion I'm hoping some time and space traveling crazy man will save us all.
Let me also add.... anyone see a robot that can do more than just dance and one other main function? Anyone see a robot that can successfully walk up and down stairs every time it tries? Yeah robotics is more than 20 years off. Technology isn't going as far as fast as everyone thinks. It only goes as far as humans can advance it and so I'm not counting on much. Remember how in the 80s we were told by now we would have anti-gravity, laser guns, and teleportation? We're not even close.

I want Ghost in the Shell to be REAL.
36. moretech - October 4, 2009 6:03 PM
as far fetched as this hole thing sounds keep in mind that Kurzweil invented the scanner, photocopier and reading technology for the blind. he also predicted the internet, modern cell phones, MP3 players and the processing power of modern computers before they came into being. Kurzweil may be obsessed with immortality but he knows his shit.
btw the reporter misinterpreted what he was saying. Ray belives that in 20 years we will have the technology (using nanobots) to increase our life spans by preventing illness and reversing aging. he does not think we will be able to be completely mechanistic until around 2045. you guys should go read The Singularity is Near by Mr. Kurzweil.
