Sep 16 2009Hack And Slash: College Student Kills Would-Be Robber With Samurai Sword

college-samurai.jpg

John Pontilillo, a Johns Hopkins undergrad, killed a would-be robber with a samurai sword after finding the thieving bastard attempting to pilfer items from his garage. Nice, John, I would have done the same thing. Except blindfolded because I'm like 30x tougher than you are.

Hours earlier, someone had broken into John Pontolillo's house and taken two laptops and a video-game console. Now it was past midnight, and he heard noises coming from the garage out back.

The Johns Hopkins University undergraduate didn't run. He didn't call the police. He grabbed his samurai sword.

With the 3- to 5-foot-long (HOW LONG WAS IT?!), razor-sharp weapon in hand, police say, Pontolillo crept toward the noise. He noticed a side door in the garage had been pried open. When a man inside lunged at him, police say, the confrontation was fatal.

Pontolillo...struck the intruder no more than twice, police say, nearly severing his left hand and inflicting what police termed a "spear laceration."

Hell yeah, vigilante justice. This is exactly why I booby-trapped my Pop Tart cabinet. Next time my roommate tries to steal some, BOOM! Literally, boom: monster effing explosion. Say goodbye to your face, Dave -- it sucked anyways! Seriously, your mom doesn't even love it. I know because she told me WHEN WE WERE MAKING LOVE. She talked about you the whole time.

first and thats amazing.
give me beer!

Wow! Real life ninja!

take that! ha!
next time go rob a kindergarten!

Sweet, I've got one of those

Now if I could just get Kanye to bust into my house...

Or Russel Brand.

thats not vigilanteism, its protection of personal property and self defense,,, huge and important difference.

well done sir. you are a great american ninja and I salute you.

I'll give the requisite, "There can be only One!"

Nice work, but did this really require a "thanks for saving us," blowjob from one of his roomates (notice head in pic)? Wow bad timing....

I saw this story yesterday and thought it had Geekologie written all over it.
Glad I submitted it.

I heard it was a Hitori Hanzo sword.

this would never happen to me its like someone trying to rob Satan's house

@Jim
It does look like the Highlander Katana!

The way of the Samurai isn't completely dead, it appears. Unlike the intruder, who probably never thought he would meet his doom from a samurai sword.

His last thoughts were probably 'Oh, you've got to be f*ckin kidding me'

"The intruder, Donald D. Rice of Baltimore, a 49-year-old repeat offender who had been released from jail only Saturday, died at the bloody scene."

He had 29 prior convictions, and apparently going to jail didn't teach him his f*cking lesson. Getting chopped up by a samurai sword ought to teach him not to steal again...

@9 only the best
@11 I was going to say the same thing

kickass for this guy, I def would've done the same thing (as much I hope to never have to) but just used one of the guns

@13 he saved taxpayers thousands with 2 swings of a sword, a hero to all

Wow. I have a new hero! lol, jk. But seriously, this is awesome.

I'm Stupid.

If that has happened over here in the UK, that bloke would be locked up by now. UK laws suck

More Power to the guy for being able to defend what is his :)

@15.. it's possible he didn't save the taxpayers any money.. the local DA is at least discussing charging him.

And who's to say the intruder's family might not sue him for wrongful death.

Sucks..

FAKE!!! Beyonce killed that robber... I'm growing tired of the media's fish stick propaganda...

@4 do you have a garage and what's the address

@13
aaaaaahhhhh..... yeah, i think he learned his lesson about stealing.... he is DEAD

dear geekologie writer:
i love you..... BUT just so you know its johnS hopkins university....
still love you though
~me

Moo

That's fu-cked. This kid now has to live with the fact that he murdered someone over a couple laptops and whatever sh-it was in his garage.
Do not like.

@24
Who cares what you think.... you're a snitch

@19 argh you're right, justice here will be overshadowed by the law of the land & the rights of it's people

The news article I read said the guy had 3 friends with him
Somehow a robber "lunging" at 4 men doesn't seem plausible unless he was Chuck Norris.
This sounds more like a Murder/Execution
Which, considering he was a robber, he was probably within his rights.
But I wouldn't be surprised to hear if this guy comes up on charges as more details surfaces.

he lunged at the guy with the sword, the other 3 (his roomates) were supposedly in another part of the house. this guy, as it says in the post, has 29 priors, for burglary, b&e, and auto theft.

another charge in 2007 was placed on hold since the police officer he pulled a gun on was on military leave. this kid also confronted the man first, at which point the burglar brought a fist to a sword fight. and failed.

oh, and i would have yelled FATALITY afterwards

I did something similar to this except of a sword I used my penis and it was a women robbing my place! :3

Makes me proud to be a Hopkins Alum.

So you can't be charged with murder if you kill someone robbing your house?

@32 depends on your local, state, and federal laws
in texas i believe its legal to kill an intruder.

@32
For the most accurate and current information please check with your local municipality on the laws governing killing & dismembering intruders in your house/on your property.

@33
This guy in Texas killed 2 people (while he was on the phone with 911) who were breaking into his neighbor's house.
He got off.
I've heard the 911 call before on the Preston & Steve Show

Living in California, I'm pretty sure I would go to jail for life if I did this.

Apparently this thing happens all the time in Baltimore. Who knew there were so many ninja's in Maryland?

Sword attacks not uncommon in Baltimore area
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/crime/blog/2009/09/sword_killings_not_uncommon_in.html

Well, I'm a Hopkins undergrad who knows the kid and lives in a similar rowhouse right down the block from where this happened. Our houses get robbed all the time - yeah its Baltimore, yeah its a fact of life, but that doesnt make it less shitty of a situation.

That said, John is not a samurai who knows how kill someone. He happened to pick up a samurai sword that was in his house (the former old tenants left it, I knew them too) and protected his house. Also, theyre hopkins students - not really intimidating to Bmore robbers - and Im sure that crackhead thought he couldve taken them all. John just swung and got lucky. That's all.

Execution/murder? please. we're NERDS. you're lucky he didnt bring a lightsaber to a gunfight.

i did the same thing one time, except instead of a robber, it was my roomate popping out to say
SURPRISE!
.

This is a beautiful thing! And good riddance to the worthless robber! John made the world a better place.

I say good work. He backed him into a corner and all that crap and the kid defended himself.

Needless to say it sucks he has to live with the fact he killed someone, but self defense 101 - I'm taking his class!

wow, what a compassionate crew. i can't imagine killing another human being over material possessions or being happy that someone else did. if someone were threatening my life or that of a loved one, maybe. but a bunch of replaceable stuff?

what if the thief has kids or an elderly parent he takes care of? just because he makes bad decisions doesn't mean he's inherently a bad person in every aspect of his life.

even if you believe in 'an eye for an eye', taking someone's life seems a tad more severe than stealing a couple of laptops and an xbox. i'd hardly call the samurai guy a hero.

The man lunged at him. Simple as that. If someone were to lunge at me I will fight tooth and claw. If I happen to swing and I'm carrying a sword to defend myself in case you have a weapon, I am going after you with that sword.

No, a thief is not inherently a bad person. Some people steal because they need money desperately for their family - not a GOOD idea, but not evil.

I hope it happens to you or yoir mother and you get to experiance a brutal rape and beating; its only a matter of time ( im sure he already has previuosly ) before he takes his B&E to the next level.

nunchucks for the win.

Will all the hippies posting above me please get a sword and behead yourselves? Killing an intruder IS NOT MURDER, you braindead bitches.

when someone is in your house stealing your junk how the hell do you know if he has a gun or not? been many stories of robbers doing the murdering in the homes of people they are stealing from. damn right im going to have a weapon in tow when i confront the retard. and if he makes a move, mine will be quicker...
that seemed to be the case...robber lunged at the guy, he defended.
I think its f**ked up if this kid gets charges on him. robber got away with multiple charges....he cleaned up what the cops couldnt seem to do.

guys, you gotta admit, that guy kicks big fat fat ass ass.

I will defend what is mine. Nuff said.

What happens if you let someone take your stuff without a fight? They come back and take more of your stuff until you don't have anything of worth left.

To the people who say it's horrible to kill someone over a few laptops and an Xbox....have you seen my laptop or xbox? That shit has brought me tons of enjoyment over the years. If not for my laptop, I would not know the joys of Geekologie. I would be one of those kids using a cellphone to write crap like "UR teh SUX." What did a robber ever do to increase my enjoyment of life? Nothing. So, even if this dude had an old mother he was taking care of, I don't care. Sounds like someone should have done a better job instilling the value of "not stealing other peoples shit."

Learn from Dave Chappelle and sprinkle some crack on the guy.

Hey! I am a sexy white girl who is a sports lover,just seeking hot dating or whatever comes. I'm fun, and know how to have a great time, I just upload my latest blog on --__-interracialsearching.com-..__

Swords are cool but the kid is lucky this robber with 29 priors didn't have a gun on him. That being said, the world gave this thief 29 chances (probably more since these are the only ones he got caught for), it was only a matter of time before it came to a violent end. Either for him or one of his victims. I think I'll spend more time feeling sorry for real victims than this guy.

Ok look at the picture, With no past experience drinking busch beer are the police sure this guy was'nt in a Busch Beer Rage!

arhg mffers trying to steal me beer again!

@52: .........shut up......

This is freaking amazing. Just imagine what the rest of his life is gonna be like. His friends are gonna be like "Yeah, I skydived into the Grand Canyon and landed on a kayak, then I white water paddled through the river. Hey Dave! What did you do?"

"I found a guy robbing me, so I grabbed my samurai sword and crept up behind him. He lunged at me so I almost cut off his hand then stabbed him through the heart....."

[Dave wins]

What a candy ass. He should have beheaded the guy.

For his next trick maybe he can sever that head growing out of his stomach from the rest of his body???

Strange picture...

Taking someone's life is murder, even if you think it's justified.

47
Intruder was rummaging in the garage of student housing. That's probably where all the irreplaceables were. Family heirlooms, jewelery and and whatnot. Grabbing a sword and investigating was a dumb idea especially without calling the cops first.

50
Hopefully you learn to lock your doors, and not keep your laptop on the window sill.

It's definitely horrible to kill someone over the xbox. You'll get the same enjoyment out of the next one your mum buys you. In fact, she'll probably be willing to get you the 360 this time. Score, even more enjoyment

I was one of the EMT's responding to the call. (of course this isn't my real name) The call came it as just a "severed hand" at about 2 AM. Boy were we in for a surprise. His hand wasn't completely severed but almost. What killed him was the trauma to his face and chest. he threw his arms up in a defensive stance. Alot of good it did him.

He didn't fully server the head so I guess the fight will continue.

His sword is now very valuable - IT HAS TAKEN A LIFE!!!! - friggin cops probably took it.

It sickens me the way some Americans glory in the death of their fellow citizens, no wonder your country has such little respect in the world.

That's awesome. No one's done that in like 400 years.

That's awesome. No one's done that in like 400 years.

If someone breaks into my house then they have better accepted the fact that they have now put their life in my hands. You have absolutely no rite in invade my home and put my family in danger. If you're simply a homeless man looking to take a sandwich out of the fridge, or a drug-addict looking to hock my TV for drug money, it does not matter. The threat is the same. You made a conscious decision to violate my rites by breaking and entering my home. You made a conscious decision to put my family at risk. I will do whatever it takes to defend my family. If I go to jail, then so be it. But I will be damned if I'll sit back and watch my wife and kids be tied up, raped, and shot.
