Aug 21 2009Uh-Oh: Gamers More Likely To Be Depressed

No that isn't me. That is a sad gamer. You see, a recent study found that gamers are more likely to be depressed than non-gamers. Shocking, I know.
The average gamer is 35, overweight, and more likely to be depressed, says a new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study, which was carried out in the Seattle-Tacoma area, found that gamers reported "lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status, and to mental-health concerns."
Oh yeah? Well I'm only 28, overweight and depressed. So put that in your study and smoke it like a bong (BLUBLBLUBLBLUBLBLUBLUB)!
Study: Games are depressing...or are they? [yahoo]

i'm entirely surprised. they don't get enough vitamin D from the sun either, which decreases their melatonin intake (comes in thru tha eyes!). Sun exposure and exercise are simple ways to cure depression without taking a pill (which is expensive and is more likely to kill you).

@ squeehunter: thats what im saying... what if its the other way around? what if people play video games because they are depressed and less extroverted and its their only means of social interaction or escape, the study doesn't necessarily mean that video games make people that way, it may be that people with those characteristics play video games as a result

Dude, I think that´s my old friend, Derrick. He was a bit whiney, and him being depressed doesn´t surprise me in the least bit. To top it off, he does live in the Seattle Area, so that makes me think even more that that´s him. Last I checked he was still addicted to final fantasy online. This article is true tough in that i traded in my console for a gym membership. I´m happy. I also drink alot, so that helps.
39. deadbodyman - August 21, 2009 3:18 PM
Hrm...reminds me of the time the dr's diagnosed me as depressive with psychotic tendencies. Funny enough, that was shortly after I stopped drinking and gaming. Coincidence? I don't think so.
40. DrThrasher - August 21, 2009 3:23 PM
@every questioning the location of the study:
If lets say 40% of non-gamers in Seattle are depressed and 70% of gamers in Seattle are depressed then you can reasonably state that gamers are more likely to be depressed than non-gamers.
If 25% of non-gamers in LA are depressed and 45% of gamers in LA are depressed then you can reasonably state that gamers are more likely to be depressed than non-gamers.
If 25% of non-gamers in LA are depressed and 70% of gamers in Seattle are depressed then you can NOT reasonably state that gamers are more likely to be depressed than non-gamers.
So rest assured location doesn't matter when both the control(non-gamers) and test subject(gamers) are in the same location. It's science.

The average gamer is 35? that's news to me. That's like, the oldest gamer out there, nobody at 40 years old plays crazy amounts of video games unless they're handicapped and can't leave the house (which coincidentally would be an overweight 300pnd bastard)
Anyway, the average gamer would be a lot younger than that.

The article never said gaming caused depression (at least not the quote), just that 35 year olds who were gamers happened to be more likely to be depressed. So the point that gaming is an escape isn't a correction, it's more like a reason.
Personally, I think publishing that study was an attempt to scare kids into stop gaming to avoid being that fat 35 year old they will likely become anyway. If gaming doesn't depress you, your future wife might, or her mother, or work or something. Just do what makes you happy as long as it doesn't hurt others.

this is such a flawed study. did they ever consider the fact that the guy could be depressed because hes overweight and old and that gaming is just coincidental? or how about the guy is overweight because hes old and depressed?
kinda reminds me of that columbine thing some creationist said, "those kids are crazy because they believe in evolution" or that politician said "those kids started shooting because they like to play video games"
f***ing morons in our government.
102. Gwenny - August 24, 2009 5:32 PM
@squeehunter EXACTLY They are looking at this wrong, as usual. I suspect it's more likely that folks who are more prone to depression are attracted to gaming. And, say folks who aren't extroverted to begin with and would have engaged in non-social activities before there were video games. Or have health issues that keep them from participating in normal life.
103. Todd - August 25, 2009 8:48 PM
I can't believe they wasted money on this, they could have just come by any engineering firm in the country. My little video rant on the subject: http://bit.ly/feLzd
104. DoomDuck - August 26, 2009 7:21 PM
This was possibly already brought up, but it bears repeating..
1) The study didn't interview anyone under 18. Their conclusion on the age is pretty severely biased just based on that.
2) Correlation does not imply causation. It could just as easily be stated that depressed people seek a solo distraction, which video games provide.
