Aug 19 2009Screw Mother Nature: HP Shipping Fail

Not to be outdone by Dell's L337 shipping practices, HP decided to ramp up their efforts to show that THEY hate this planet even more. What's in the box? Hit the jump to find out. And no, it's not a tiger. But good guess.
Hit it. DO IT NOW!

HP's Ridiculous Shipment Packaging [notebookreview]
Thanks Russell, one time my grandfather sent a coconut in the mail. Literally, a coconut. No box or nothin'.

My parents used to do this with my Christmas presents!
I'd start off thinking I got a go-kart, but it'd always end up being socks. Then I'd say "f*** Jesus" and run up to my room. It went on like this for YEARS.
12. Coffee Additc - August 19, 2009 3:31 PM
LOL Soooo true... package might be more expensive than the cable itself
13. c-basstian - August 19, 2009 3:33 PM
i worked for a major frieght company for about two years and on just the inbound dock alone they had over a million dollars worth of claims for the year of 2006. this is the reason for sh!t like this.. if they didnt do that.. that part would never arrive.. i remember throwing dells around a trailer because we were behind schedule.. thats what insurance is for i guess
14. Hudson - August 19, 2009 3:36 PM
Why not just use UPS???
15. Coffee Addict - August 19, 2009 3:41 PM
That's the beauty of logistics, having to consider all the packaging regulations, destination, once packed... how will they be palletized and put in the truck/airplane/boat... then thanks once again to mother nature (counting humans as well lol) not having it on time and afterwards filling claims due delays, shortages etc... And thanks to that I got a job at HP for over 4 years :D
16. GoSS Jerk - August 19, 2009 3:42 PM
looks like Coffe Addict shipped that cable then.....
17. Coffee Addict - August 19, 2009 3:44 PM
@16 ... sure thing :P
18. GoSS Jerk - August 19, 2009 3:45 PM
although knowing Coffe Addict... bigger is better, that packaging is too small for that cable.....
19. Coffee Addict - August 19, 2009 3:48 PM
Mmm you might be saying that for the amount of shoes I owe.... Totally agree... never is enough... and since BAMS isn´t as demanding as shipping cables... I guess I should start thinking on those new hills I saw yesterday wanting to be owned :)
20. naas - August 19, 2009 3:49 PM
Pffft typical. I'm sure someone somewhere was probably doing this systematically, you know - following the rules or doing what they were told
21. GoSS Jerk - August 19, 2009 3:51 PM
Wow, i didnt realize you owed all those shoes, i guess i can chip in with a couple of bucks to get you outa the deep end of the debt pool.....

24. Toby - August 19, 2009 3:53 PM
I am a packing supervisor at a smallish company and have seen stuff like this many times. What we have here is a bulk pack part that was the last in the box. Someone in inventory put the info on the outside of the box to "save time later" rather then just through out the frigging thing out. Some poor guy got the picklist and pulled the box thinking the box was the whole part. Sure the schmuck didn't read the description, then maybe he would have thought about it and looked inside or heard it flop around a little. I just wonder who paid for the freight. I bet it wasn't cheap this way either way.
25. Captain Shaddap - August 19, 2009 3:55 PM
I worked in shipping for four years. Unless the HP shipping people have downs syndrome and are under the are of 5, this is what white people with jobs call "a joke".
26. Michael - August 19, 2009 3:55 PM
This is pretty typical of corporate shipping practices. It appears that this is a Euro plug, which shows that even those on the other side aren't immune to this foolishness. I love how there was no filler in the box, so the little box was all bouncing around inside probably making a ruckus.
27. Captain Addendum - August 19, 2009 3:58 PM
However if you consider that only you - or us as it were - are smart enough to see the dramatic irony in the size difference; and if we are at the same time able to suppose that nobody involved was able to, this becomes funny for a different reason though funny isn't the word. It becomes a guffaw at our superiority.

I had the same thing from some business on amazon, I ordered some mechanical pencils and lead and they sent it in a fairly large box, companies are weird like that. This is very plausible.

@31
That reminds me of the episode of Malcom in the Middle where Reese put himself in a wooden crate and told Dewey to ship him to China but he didn't really do it so he just brought him back to their garage and then he rocked the crate all the time and then Jessica's bf happened to be Chinese and strong so Dewey pretended he couldn't open the crate and needed someone strong to open it so when the Chinese guy opened it Reese saw him and wanted to beat him up because in his class everyone got pen-pals and Reese was stupid and hated his Chinese pen-pal because he didn't get his nunchucks signed or anything. So when he opened the crate the Chinese guy was alot stronger than him because Reese's back hurt from the crate and he got his @$$ kicked. Did you notice I only used a period twice? Period like this: [.] not like a girls period. Well bai!
