Aug 24 2009Sadness: Father Leaves Copy Of Call Of Duty: World At War For Fallen Soldier Son

So yeah, this is sad. Private Richard Hunt, the 200th U.K. soldier to die in Afghanistan, was buried over the weekend. He would have been 22 yesterday.
His father Phillip, enjoyed playing Call of Duty: World at War with his son. He left a copy of the game at his grave.
"Happy Birthday 'Hunty'. Play you again one day. Dad."
Wow, that tore me up.
Dad's Tribute: Call of Duty on Soldier Son's Grave [kotaku]
Thanks to Solozaur, whose single tear splattered F10.

It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a Free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even of his personal services to the defense of it.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
this is exactly like that scene in the movie Never BAck Down where Max and his co-workers locked themselves in the evidence room and looked at some johnny chimpo movies, made by afghanistanimation in order to help solve a crime. Later when the boss came in and caught them smoking evidence and screwing around with prisoners they got Farva to say shenanigans, and handed the boss their guns to pistol whip him.

12. Alex - August 24, 2009 1:40 PM
Oh come on, he was a soldier who chose to join up and fight in someone elses country. He got killed. Sad for his relatives / friends and what have you, of course. But past that he chose to take on the profession and was unlucky enough to be hurt by it as so many soldiers are on both sides. I'm hoping that this wouldn't have been put here on Geekologie if not for the computer game involvement, and even that is a stretch. This isn't the place for sensationalist grieving.

15. Timbo - August 24, 2009 1:46 PM
@12 it's a tribute to someone fighting for their country you jerk... any place is a good place for that
16. Alex - August 24, 2009 1:55 PM
Timbo, please, explain to me how this soldier was fighting for his country? I happen to live in the south of the country this soldier came from and I haven't seen a single Afghanistan tank / missile / soldier wandering about looking to attack my people.
He might have been out there fighting for many things, but I don't think "his country" is one of them.
Now before you get all riled about that, consider that I'm not judging this soldier and no I don't think he deserved to die, I am also happy to send out heart felt best wishes to his family. But do get down off the high horse about it - (this soldier) was performing a chosen profession and got killed in it, because that's the risk that goes with this profession. In these troubled times when we're busy sending out young men to die miles away from home in dusty countries that would rather see the back of us - we can do without the media sensationalism and the eager public looking to attack anyone questioning whether we should be out there or not.
And now look what you've done, you've gone and forced me into politics. I never thought I'd do that here on a *gadget* website. Oh well.

1. Yet you go on about it that extensively?
2. It's a forum so GW can post whatever he wants and on top of that since when is gaming a "geeky" stretch? Gaming is a huge deal on this site.
3. It was a quick little post from GW not a lengthy article, in fact your comment was longer so get over it. It was just something to share with the people that do care. Get over it. :)

21. Dishy Dishyington - August 24, 2009 2:02 PM
Alex,
This is about a young man who died, and how his father misses him. It's not about the circumstances of his death. It's about loss. It's sad.
22. The Magician - August 24, 2009 2:03 PM
You guys are all a bunch of chumps, no need to bring politics into this. He chose to be a soldier, and he died. It happens, you people need to chill out. It's just like someone choosing to smoke and dying of lung cancer. It was their choice and as a result they died.
Boo Hoo
cry me a river
23. delrey28 - August 24, 2009 2:03 PM
Am I the only one that finds this absolutely hilarious?
Guy and his dad bond while playing a video game where you pretend to shoot and kill people in battle.
Son gets killed in battle.
Dad puts video game on grave and even has a cheesy line to go with it indicating that one day he and his boy will be re-united in heaven where they will join a clan and pretend to decimate the enemy again.
HAHAHA.
Best post ever. I mean, sure I'm sorry the guy died and all, but this scenario is just too much. lol. How strange our world has become.
24. the watcher - August 24, 2009 2:04 PM
I suppose it would be unwelcome to point out that had the son and dad bonded over, say, baseball or some other non-violent game rather than Call of Duty, his son might not have gotten the great idea to go off and be a soldier and might still therefore be alive. Love that the father stays committed to "playing" at killing people again someday with his son, though. At least he's consistent.
25. CoinOperatedBoi - August 24, 2009 2:05 PM
@Alex
No worries it happens. I do agree with the defending their country thing though. I and a bunch of my friends were/are military and I personally don't think being over there is defending our countries. But that's another site with another forum :P
I can't fathom what that father is going through though. I can't begin to think how I'd feel if I lost my son. Sucks..

I normally stick to one liners, but...
I was just sitting here sipping my fruit smoothie and I read this and it totally tore me up too.
@12 - I understand your POV, but agree that this post fits the blog. Regardless of which administration you supported in the past 20 years, these men and women sign up not knowing where they'll be stationed, assigned to, or what horrible civil or international situation they'll shipped off to. They do this so you and I can post our fleeting comments on places like this.
I'd personally be wasted in a real firefight in less than 1 second, so I thank them for doing what I cannot do which allows me to follow a creative career to maybe not serve our country in a civic/military sense, but to hopefully help further its long history of creative and artistic innovation.
If you really want that point driven home, see the series John Adams where John Adams is being questioned by a French court about his children and the big picture of true freedom. He expresses this perfectly.
Thanks again, Hunty.

I hate when people bitch about bringing politics into stuff like this. POLITICS IS WHY HE'S DEAD. When we're killing the Iraqis and winning, you're like,"shut up you liberal fag,we's kickin ASS!!!" but then when one of our guys die it's like,"don't bring up politics!!!!"
This kid's early death wasn't some inevitability.

64. QUASIMODEM - August 24, 2009 4:26 PM
Odd that Alex should talk about high horses as he sits there pontificating misguidedly.
Of course it was posted due to the presence of the game, you complete muppet. That's not even in question. What exactly are you hoping to vommunicate with your over-verbose sanctimony? That you don't believe we should be fighting there? Well take a pat on the head, son, you think the same as the rest of us - we just didn't choose to post self-aggrandizing, self-absorbed, self-indulgent soliloquies in COMPLETELY the wrong place. We took the newspost for what it was (a technology/geekery-related memento in a context where things like flowers and notes from grieving relatives are more common), thought 'HEY, THAT'S PRETTY NOVEL' and then made the mistake of scrolling down to the comments to read your misplaced diatribe. Jog on, lad.
I miss Hedonistica more with every update I read on this site, at least it drew a more interesting crowd than this sort of dullard. Spare me the 'R.I.P. Geekologie' balls, you don't know the half of it.
65. Bernard Fleming - August 24, 2009 4:35 PM

I guess I'm one of the dullards then because "'R.I.P. Geegologie' balls"? What does that even mean?
Also spare you? So I am not familiar with Hedonistica and I don't know what I'm missing. I can still mourn what I have lost.

Has no-one picked up that this guys name is Dick Hunt ?
81. Enflamed - August 25, 2009 3:38 AM
A couple things. One being, everyone just needs to sit back relax and sip on some delicious beverages. First, I am in no way shape or form a supporter of war in any way. Personally, I'm more of an "avoid confrontation" kind of guy. So I can see where people are getting the whole idea of "why mourn the guy when he made his choice knowing he could get hurt" argument. However, Death is Death. It's not pleasurable. It's not pretty. But it's true, and it happens. People should be respected in their process of mourning, because it helps people live their life after a loss.
Now that I'm done with that,
@81 Dick Hunt is VERY similar to Duck Hunt. Hmm......
