Aug 24 2009Sadness: Father Leaves Copy Of Call Of Duty: World At War For Fallen Soldier Son

cod-sadness.jpg

So yeah, this is sad. Private Richard Hunt, the 200th U.K. soldier to die in Afghanistan, was buried over the weekend. He would have been 22 yesterday.

His father Phillip, enjoyed playing Call of Duty: World at War with his son. He left a copy of the game at his grave.

"Happy Birthday 'Hunty'. Play you again one day. Dad."

Wow, that tore me up.

Dad's Tribute: Call of Duty on Soldier Son's Grave [kotaku]

Thanks to Solozaur, whose single tear splattered F10.

Nothing wrong with that.

It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a Free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even of his personal services to the defense of it.

I wish I had someone to bond with like that.

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

this is exactly like that scene in the movie Never BAck Down where Max and his co-workers locked themselves in the evidence room and looked at some johnny chimpo movies, made by afghanistanimation in order to help solve a crime. Later when the boss came in and caught them smoking evidence and screwing around with prisoners they got Farva to say shenanigans, and handed the boss their guns to pistol whip him.

You know some jerk is gonna come through and steal it to sell on ebay...

God damn you are a dumb c*nt Daisy, one post that could really do without your stupid bullsh!t, yet you seem to enjoy coming on here and acting like a complete retard.

man that's sad :\

Duuuude...[or dudat or w/e] not the best post to troll over O:

RIP Richard

Really fitting tribute to his son i think

seriously, that made me tear up a little...

Oh come on, he was a soldier who chose to join up and fight in someone elses country. He got killed. Sad for his relatives / friends and what have you, of course. But past that he chose to take on the profession and was unlucky enough to be hurt by it as so many soldiers are on both sides. I'm hoping that this wouldn't have been put here on Geekologie if not for the computer game involvement, and even that is a stretch. This isn't the place for sensationalist grieving.

Mr. Krinkle,
why don't you take that wrinkle
out of your underwear
and shut the fück up.

Politics have nothing to do with it.

It was a sad, and touching moment A genuine emotion resulting from time shared in a geek hobby. Thanks GW~

@12 it's a tribute to someone fighting for their country you jerk... any place is a good place for that

Timbo, please, explain to me how this soldier was fighting for his country? I happen to live in the south of the country this soldier came from and I haven't seen a single Afghanistan tank / missile / soldier wandering about looking to attack my people.

He might have been out there fighting for many things, but I don't think "his country" is one of them.

Now before you get all riled about that, consider that I'm not judging this soldier and no I don't think he deserved to die, I am also happy to send out heart felt best wishes to his family. But do get down off the high horse about it - (this soldier) was performing a chosen profession and got killed in it, because that's the risk that goes with this profession. In these troubled times when we're busy sending out young men to die miles away from home in dusty countries that would rather see the back of us - we can do without the media sensationalism and the eager public looking to attack anyone questioning whether we should be out there or not.

And now look what you've done, you've gone and forced me into politics. I never thought I'd do that here on a *gadget* website. Oh well.

FAKE!!!!

@12

1. Yet you go on about it that extensively?
2. It's a forum so GW can post whatever he wants and on top of that since when is gaming a "geeky" stretch? Gaming is a huge deal on this site.
3. It was a quick little post from GW not a lengthy article, in fact your comment was longer so get over it. It was just something to share with the people that do care. Get over it. :)

I seriously just teared up a bit at my desk.

CoinOperateBoi - Fair point, I got caught ranting. I've seen too many news papers / forums of people joining the whole sensationalist media thing. It's getting to me. Carry on :)

Alex,

This is about a young man who died, and how his father misses him. It's not about the circumstances of his death. It's about loss. It's sad.

You guys are all a bunch of chumps, no need to bring politics into this. He chose to be a soldier, and he died. It happens, you people need to chill out. It's just like someone choosing to smoke and dying of lung cancer. It was their choice and as a result they died.

Boo Hoo

cry me a river

Am I the only one that finds this absolutely hilarious?

Guy and his dad bond while playing a video game where you pretend to shoot and kill people in battle.

Son gets killed in battle.

Dad puts video game on grave and even has a cheesy line to go with it indicating that one day he and his boy will be re-united in heaven where they will join a clan and pretend to decimate the enemy again.

HAHAHA.

Best post ever. I mean, sure I'm sorry the guy died and all, but this scenario is just too much. lol. How strange our world has become.

I suppose it would be unwelcome to point out that had the son and dad bonded over, say, baseball or some other non-violent game rather than Call of Duty, his son might not have gotten the great idea to go off and be a soldier and might still therefore be alive. Love that the father stays committed to "playing" at killing people again someday with his son, though. At least he's consistent.

@Alex

No worries it happens. I do agree with the defending their country thing though. I and a bunch of my friends were/are military and I personally don't think being over there is defending our countries. But that's another site with another forum :P

I can't fathom what that father is going through though. I can't begin to think how I'd feel if I lost my son. Sucks..

delrey28, it's ironic. But it's not funny.

Sad post. RIP.
Don't screw it up with your politics people... nuff said....

I always thought it was wierd that a soldier would play a game where you're a soldier. Don't they get enough of it from real life?
Like I wouldn't want to play a game where you're a bitter jackass posting flippant remarks in the comments section of a touching internet article.

This story i sad and heart warming

lick dog ballz nerds

@28 yeah, that game wouldn't be much fun.

This brought a tear to my eye... seriously.

@daisy - that movie you are describing is super troopers you idiot!

@29 hell yea he's back!!!

I've missed reading your posts!!!

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Forrest Gump where Forrest went to see Bubba's mom and started to call her "Dead Bubba Nigga Mom".

I normally stick to one liners, but...

I was just sitting here sipping my fruit smoothie and I read this and it totally tore me up too.

@12 - I understand your POV, but agree that this post fits the blog. Regardless of which administration you supported in the past 20 years, these men and women sign up not knowing where they'll be stationed, assigned to, or what horrible civil or international situation they'll shipped off to. They do this so you and I can post our fleeting comments on places like this.

I'd personally be wasted in a real firefight in less than 1 second, so I thank them for doing what I cannot do which allows me to follow a creative career to maybe not serve our country in a civic/military sense, but to hopefully help further its long history of creative and artistic innovation.

If you really want that point driven home, see the series John Adams where John Adams is being questioned by a French court about his children and the big picture of true freedom. He expresses this perfectly.

Thanks again, Hunty.

The real tragedy here is that tard face in the Peter Mehlman's google video add.
I'm sure by now Private Richard Hunt is in heaven totally smashing that chick from the Evony add...or maybe thats just my idea of heaven?

Can someone please ban Daisy and all this fake BS. It was funny once, but when it leads to racist comments, I'm on the verge of leaving Geekologie. Its not funny, and its not clever.

thanks, GW

God, chillax it was just a sad story whether its fake or not, some of the comments here are utterly ridiculous, i mean come on its just sad- to lose someone you love - this post is not about politics or being sentimental- when you lose someone- its sad, get over it people!!!!

Moo

*sigh*

That is all.

aww damn
that makes me all warm and gooey inside *sniffle*

F*ck, that's sad. Really sad.

R.I.P.

@ George Washington- finish that quote up with "Except if your dad's rich, then get somebody poor to do it for you." and you're dead-on

Now me, i would like to be barried with a copy of Call of Duty 4.

Irony and grief are a sad combo.
Best wishes to the family.
Thanks to the soldier who agreed to put his life on the line for those who can't or won't, regardless of where they sent him, or why.

Respect

@36

How is Daisys comment racist?? For all you know Daisy could be a black person. Also due to the quote marks it is just that, a quote. Basically pull your head outo your politically correct arse you honky. yeah HONKY

47 - That line wasn't in the movie, hun. It was a blatant trolling racist remark. I think the person who posted it is a pathetic asshat.
36 - However, they have a right to be a douchenozzle. Just ingore the troll(s)

Daisy is trying for the all-time longest FAIL award in troller posting. Simple solution: MAC ban, IP ban. Unless you're scared that you can't be effectual with the ban. But not every geek knows how to be effective, I guess...

=) CALL ME!!

I hate when people bitch about bringing politics into stuff like this. POLITICS IS WHY HE'S DEAD. When we're killing the Iraqis and winning, you're like,"shut up you liberal fag,we's kickin ASS!!!" but then when one of our guys die it's like,"don't bring up politics!!!!"
This kid's early death wasn't some inevitability.

erm... *ignore
I have no idea what an ingore is.

This thread sucks.

R.I.P.

@50 Religion is why he is dead, not politics. Just saying...

keep it up daisy, if it weren't for you, this whole world would collapse on itself....

lol i love the war going on between the people on this its amusing.. still feel sad

RIP I hope you're still fragen 'em up there..

NIce story. Though some of the posts ranting about politics and how they don't give a damn about the kid being dead sure prove there's a lot of socially inept chimps out there.

@ Kid Nicky
Isn't it nap time yet?

He would have been 22 so his son would be about 3.

Still RIP

I can't believe people are already bringing politics into this!!! People just need conflict around here (the internets).

Also it is pretty sad that he left WaW and not Modern Warfare... such a better game.

He actually shot himself because

Twilight is taking too long to come out.

Sorry GW. You had a nice little site here once. However, like all things good and true in this world the jackals smelled fresh meat and came running. Now a person can't even enjoy their morning cup o jesus and read the postings in peace. RIP Geekologie.

Odd that Alex should talk about high horses as he sits there pontificating misguidedly.

Of course it was posted due to the presence of the game, you complete muppet. That's not even in question. What exactly are you hoping to vommunicate with your over-verbose sanctimony? That you don't believe we should be fighting there? Well take a pat on the head, son, you think the same as the rest of us - we just didn't choose to post self-aggrandizing, self-absorbed, self-indulgent soliloquies in COMPLETELY the wrong place. We took the newspost for what it was (a technology/geekery-related memento in a context where things like flowers and notes from grieving relatives are more common), thought 'HEY, THAT'S PRETTY NOVEL' and then made the mistake of scrolling down to the comments to read your misplaced diatribe. Jog on, lad.

I miss Hedonistica more with every update I read on this site, at least it drew a more interesting crowd than this sort of dullard. Spare me the 'R.I.P. Geekologie' balls, you don't know the half of it.

@36 - it was never funny.

Your comment wasn't funny or clever. Should you get banned too?

@64
I guess I'm one of the dullards then because "'R.I.P. Geegologie' balls"? What does that even mean?

Also spare you? So I am not familiar with Hedonistica and I don't know what I'm missing. I can still mourn what I have lost.

Oh and RomanticDungAnus is a fag.

Daisy is really annoying and @13 why are u standing up for the idiot? And it is true that he made the choice to join up but that doesn't mean u should all be assholes towards people feeling bad for him

can i just say that i read this while the music from the smoke video was still playing and the ambiance led to me totally tearing up. that's all.

@67 you want to tell me where I was being an asshole to anyone?

Besides, maybe Kid Nicky, all I asked him was if it was time for his nap and I called a few people chumps.

So again show me where I was being an asshole.

Que Sad, I had the smoke thingy going too. Who knew?

@23

I thought it was funny. NOW BACK TO THE PROSTIBOTS!

COPY?! ........

With a good father you can bet he had a good son. I bet he is looking out for you even now. Rest in Peace.

Wow. Even on something like this...Daisy still managed to make "NBD" comments. haha.

hey Quasimodem - way to NOT prove your point by doing what you're accusing others of. (notice how this response to a "rant" is only 2 lines long?)

this kid smells like balz.... so did his dad...

He didn't even re-spawn!! Did he just give up on his team and log off. What a wank.

Sad thing is, the game probably got stolen by some teenagers wondering around the cemetery.

Wow, i havent posted any comments on anything on this site (even though i browse through it everyday) and this ... this just almost (but didn't; i swear!!) brought a tear to my eye (truth be told, i kicked them back in). This was just soooo sad and it's something that makes sense to me as a gamer and as a guy who sees this world slightly different than most others (no offense philosophists, i'm just cool like that). But yeah, really sad, Rest In Peace man.

Has no-one picked up that this guys name is Dick Hunt ?

A couple things. One being, everyone just needs to sit back relax and sip on some delicious beverages. First, I am in no way shape or form a supporter of war in any way. Personally, I'm more of an "avoid confrontation" kind of guy. So I can see where people are getting the whole idea of "why mourn the guy when he made his choice knowing he could get hurt" argument. However, Death is Death. It's not pleasurable. It's not pretty. But it's true, and it happens. People should be respected in their process of mourning, because it helps people live their life after a loss.

Now that I'm done with that,
@81 Dick Hunt is VERY similar to Duck Hunt. Hmm......

@64 What exactly are YOU hoping to "vommunicate" with YOUR over-verbose sanctimony?

@76 i agree

Yeah, that's sad. (And geeky. Totally appropriate for this site.)

RIP.

Daisy Defenders: Die. (To post "fake"...etc comments is vulgar on with a topic such as this, no matter how you look at it.)

Anyone not touched in some way about this post: STFU. Give the family and the dead some respect. They deserve that.

Must See!!!

There is just no way i read all that. could only get throu the first feew lines of most of the posts, this is geekologie, want a political/religious stage? GTFO

Reminds me of another article...

It's funny to go back sometimes and see how much LSD and I hated each other. It's all loves, kisses, and puppy dogs now. Come give me a hug big fella.

http://www.geekologie.com/2008/11/damnit_this_makes_me_sadder_th.php

OMG That is sooo sad... =(

hmmm... what a mean dad... i mean... why not modern warfare?

that's, that's b-b-beautif-f-f-ful, beautiful!!

i guess i better inform my father i want 'cod: modern warfare 2' and 'dante's inferno' beside my grave if i ever die before christmas or halloween.

This is indeed both sad an ironic.

On a random side note:

If my last name was "Hunt" I'd never name my kid something that could be shortened to a nickname ending w/ a K.
