Aug 4 2009Cops May Get Portable Drug Detectors Soon

So apparently law enforcement agencies may have access to roadside drug detectors soon, to determine if you've been been drugging and driving EVEN IF YOU HID YOUR STASH SOMEWHERE REALLY GOOD (read: not your butt, they always look there).
Spit into this little plastic test tube, and you're busted -- any cocaine, heroin, cannabis, amphetamines, and methamphetamine you might be partying with is no longer a secret.
Phillips, a company that makes TVs and all kinds of other techno-stuff, created this sophisticated dope-a-lysing device using nanotechnology, with a clever use of electromagnets and nanoparticles that can separate the sober from the impaired. After 90 seconds, the verdict shows up on a color-coded readout.
Damnit Phillips, you just made it a whole lot harder to talk my way out of a ticket. You know what i told the cop the last time I got pulled over? Me neither, I was high. ON YOUR NATURAL MUSK. Now get over here and let me whiff those pits.

how far back does it test? a big problem facing cannabis legalization here in CA is the lack of a field sobriety test, possibly like this one?
3. Les Awesome - August 4, 2009 2:34 PM
First suckas and.....if you get pulled over and they use this on you, make sure you ask for a blood test, no one can ever trust technology!!!!!!!

Just don't argue with the cop and you'll be fine. If you argue you're gonna go to jail. oh yeah and if a second patrol car comes, that also means you're going to jail lol (I took a year in criminal justice)
6. Iris - August 4, 2009 2:38 PM
oh yeah one more thing, I wonder if you they empty out the spit, or if they just have a tub full of spit by the end of the day haha

just put a few pennies under your tongue, you'll be fine. (not really)
actually said this to a cop once...."i already told you i've been drinking all day, what in the hell is that thing going to prove"

@4
your youtube video is gayer than aids
12. Pat - August 4, 2009 3:13 PM
@2 Something like this could actually be good in defense of marijuana legalization. It can be taxed and trafficked like alcohol but, as you mentioned, there's no field sobriety test for pot yet.
13. STOMPY - August 4, 2009 3:19 PM
@12
Actually, you just need to bring naas out in the feild and throw a bag of funions on the ground and see who has the worse munchies, if naas gets the funoins than that person is sober enough....
damn, this was starting off as a quick funny and turned into a freakin essay... fill in the gaps ppl i'm spent...
14. GINORMAGANTUAN - August 4, 2009 3:26 PM
WHy is weed illegal???? seems most people out generation with enough common sense know that weed is not even near as bad a drinking...... sooooo, seriously they could spend all that money the spend on busting pot for actually going after some real crime. when they were selling bootleg alcohol it was a big prob with criminals and what not, and look at it now! they are making bokoo money off drunks! then why the heck can i not light up a "J" or grow my own stash in my backyard if i want to???? i mean this is ridiculous, been smoking big weed since midleschool and i have yet to try any crack or any other dangerous drug..... i mean c'mon! i thought they said weed was a gateway drug! how come I am not addicted to crack yet???? or meth or something? ADDICTED TO PR0N MAYBE!!!!! and B00B13S, so....... OBAMA! WHERE IS MY LEGAL WEED AT????? and my hubgry hungry hippos? what is this??? KAMBODIA OR SOMETHING? make that SH#T Happen pronto!!!!!

16. naas - August 4, 2009 3:32 PM
@8 nice & very catchy, that'll be stuck in my head all day.
I haven't gotten the munchies(nor drowsy)from smoking weed in years, eating afterwards has always killed the high

PHILIPS, not PHILLIPS
18. iamshaun - August 4, 2009 4:21 PM
What the god d*mn fu*k? They're trying to detect people that have been smoking pot, instead of making something like this available to test for STDs? How many people die every year from STDs? Now compare that to the number of people that die every year from Marijuana. Let's end a real problem instead of feeding the f*cking propaganda machine.
19. SmokingGirl - August 4, 2009 4:35 PM
Philips is such a party pooper...
20. Mr Hobbes - August 4, 2009 4:38 PM
Same here naas, eating will kill a buzz. You always have to pack a fresh bowl after eating.

Indeed
22. Cody - August 4, 2009 4:57 PM
This could be a really good thing, if it works say like a breathalizer. Other countried have marijuana legal, but police it kinda like alcohol.. So if this only detects short periods of substance abuse it would be like alcohol. This could be a key for the government to actually legalize and tax the shit out of it.
23. matt - August 4, 2009 5:06 PM
this is bullshit! okay for one, personally i smoke pot and drive literally everyday and i drive great. they should do some tests to see how the people who actually use the drugs react instead instead of some kids who wanted to get paid to do some test for the university kids. this is just another reason we have to have the government, who makes rules before really understanding everything about them.
24. Deutsh-Lad - August 4, 2009 5:28 PM
Yo the main difference between this and a breathelizer is that with booze it can tell you how drunk you are, but with this thing I'm guessing it only says high / not high, as opposed to clean / medical purposes / got the munchies / high as a f@#king kite. So if that's the case they cant really use it "as yet" to control cannibus in a legalized state. That being said, i'm not saying anything about weed, except SMOKE TILL YOU CHOKE MAN, wooohoooo!!!!! cough cough....
25. cod - August 4, 2009 6:08 PM
Pointless for marijuana since it stays in your system for up to 30 days and there is, currently, no way for anyone to tell exactly when it got in your system. You can see it:
Judge: So the defendant was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana, is that correct? And this drug was taken when?
Defense lawyer: The marijuana got into my clients body 20 days before the drug test and arrest - clearly he was not under the influence at the time and he was therefore breaking no laws (no lawyer would admit his client smoked the stuff - "perhaps someone smoked it around him and it got into him that way" or something similar would be the argument!)
Judge: Dismissed
Bad for people on other drugs though, since they only stay in your blood and urine samples for a short while - but hey, f*ck you, you shouldn't be driving in the first place you drug riddled junkie!

27. Daisy - August 4, 2009 7:46 PM
FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactyl like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max went back to NJ for his mom's funeral and got pulled over by a cop who he last saw snorting coke off a urinal.
28. KiWi - August 4, 2009 9:55 PM
Awwwww, there goes my fun :(
Does it detect stuff like acid or shrooms? (ahaha I'd like to see someone driving on that... XD)
29. Slotzan - August 4, 2009 10:07 PM
I would like to know how the tested the accuracy of this. Got tons of test subjects hopped up on every drug under the sun.
30. Watch-303 - August 4, 2009 10:12 PM
I had a feeling they were going to make something like this.
31. jaime - August 4, 2009 10:41 PM

F U PHILIPS!
32. JJtoob - August 4, 2009 10:47 PM
I guess I better lay off the peyote for now, oh wait, it didn't say peyote! Whoohoo!
JK, in all seriousness, every pot head I've met is a little bit slow in the head, so you may think you are fine, but that's because you only have yourself as reference. No one can tell you how you are perceiving the world, which is a scary thing, for all we know we could be in a cocoon, hundreds of years in the future, getting our thermal energy sucked out by machines for their own benefit. But to you pot heads, I know what you will think: "I sooo don't give a dang right now..." And you know what? I respect that. Just don't come and tell me you are as alert and bright as those who don't do drugs.
33. James - August 5, 2009 12:30 AM
Everyone boycot Phillips! I'll never buy their products again. They wanna work for the fuzz, fine. F* Them!
34. Ginormagantuan - August 5, 2009 1:48 AM
JJtoob....... that was so lame, harvesting energy from human cocoons would be so inneficient........ robots would not even bother with that sh*t! we would be so dead, so shut the F@k up! umm.... i've seen high people and drunk people....... and high people are way more alert dan a p1ss @ss drunk person.
35. betterthanyoutard - August 5, 2009 3:19 AM
jjtoob, i took the SAT 1 hour after getting totally baked.
and i pwned you in it.
get real newbtard. effects of pot are gauged more by sensors in your brain that have everything to do with how often you smoke, and little to do with how much is in your system at any given moment.
i will also pwn you at tekken and sc high as a kite.
booya.

@ 14 & 35
Spoken like true potheads. :)
The thing about this roadside drug detector is that it "should" be intended to get people who use cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, pcp, meth, ect. I could care less if the person driving beside me is high. Most likely they're going 25 under the speed limit anyways. But since people who use hardcore drugs are more likely to punch a car than drive it, I have a feeling it will be used to ticket/jail people who use pot.

Would this test cover opiates such as OC's , Roxi's, Tabs, Perks, Heroin?
42. nygenxer - August 31, 2009 12:22 AM
It's ironic that the same scientific methods used to create this device have proved that it is not needed. The results of driving impairment under test conditions are as follows:
Drivers who text are the most dangerous
Cell phone users
Tied for third place are those impaired by alcohol & sleepy drivers
Young (inexperienced) drivers
Elderly drivers
Those high on marijuana tied with those who are unimpaired.
I want to repeat that: in testing, drivers high on marijuana are statistically indistinguishable from drivers who are completely sober. [The theory is that marijuana users are aware of any impairment and they compensate to make up the difference.]
So if we are going to use the same science and scientific methodology that's used to crucify drunk drivers (I am NOT defended drunk driving) then the punishments for the impairment of text messaging and cell phone usage must be even more severe while marijuana usage must NOT be considered an impairment at all.
/the more you know
