Aug 27 2009100 Years Of Movie Special Effects In 5:00

This is a little video montage of notable special effects from movies in the past 100 years all packed into a five minute clip. And as you'll see, we haven't come very far. I want to be able to feeeeeel the movies. I read Brave New World in high school! Also, almost half of a Shakespeare play. Now it's all comic books and cereal boxes.

100 Years of Special Effects [collegehumor]

Thanks to Paul, who once got specially infected by the government and now has the power of three men.

What was the song playin in background?

@3 Eskimobob
Are you HalibutBob from Anchorage?

Blocked at work.

Meh.
What about 100 years of porn? Just sayin'.

Or 100 years of stabbing an ice pic into PedoPedro's eye?

Cool montage! Could've chosen some better current special effects than those CGI marathons...

The song is Rods and Cones from Blue Man Group

the Bill Nighy/Davey Jones thing is way more bitchen then young/old Brad Pitt thing..

Moo

Ya, i like how the mojority was recent films..
if u are gona put in cgi mine as well throw in something from the watchmen or something very recent.
Not that im some watchmen fanboy, just thought the cgi was interesting.

best movie was king kong '33 style.

ben button was poo and a huge waste of time

Super Fail.

Omitted movies that should have been included:

A Trip To The Moon (1902)
Nosferatu (1922)
Metropolis (1927)
Citizen Kane (1941)
The War of the Worlds (1953)
The Birds (1963)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Westworld (1973)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Alien (1979)
Blade Runner (1982)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Willow (1988)
Total Recall (1990)
Death Becomes Her (1992)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Apollo 13 (1995)
Dragonheart (1996)
Independence Day (1996)
Twister (1996)
The Fifth Element (1997)
Starship Troopers (1997)
Titanic (1997)
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Fight Club (1999)
The Matrix (1999)
Hollow Man (2000)
The Perfect Storm (2000)
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001 - 2003)
Sin City (2005)
300 (2006)
Watchmen (2009)

Pretty cool but I figured The Matrix "bullet time" would have shown up considering how many subsequent movies used that technique.

the matrix?

Wasn't the clip of the death star exploding from one of the later versions that was done, and not the original 1977 release?

The Day The Earth Stood Still (The first one that was black & white.) The effect where the alien person shoots the laser and all the soldiers guns dissappear

Agree about Sin City. Morph city really. Maybe throw some XMen stuff in there? Planet of the Apes, or was that mostly costumes?

Oops, I was thinking of Dark City not Sin City.

@18... Took the post right out of my ... mouth?

Fail.

We haven't come very far? I think you're confusing effects with plot. We've come a huge way and will continue the legacy of O'Brien and Harryhausen and Tsuburaya.

What are you smoking?

Can't believe whoever made this jumped from some sh*tty sinbad/jason and argonauts stop action b movie to star wars and didn't include 2001 a space oddysey. 2001 effects were in many ways better than star wars and the film is still relevant 40 years later.

FAIL

Props to you for the Brave New World, that book is rad.

Where is Transformers ??

@ 25

The reason is they have yet to find one person that has been able to stay awake through the whole thing.

29

30

watch out for that RAPIST GENIE.

@ 15 I'm blocked at work, but after reading your list...let's just say this montage won't be the first thing I pull up after work.

Just kidding...the first thing I pull up after work is my pants. Totally meant the SECOND thing I pull up after work.

Odd how there was no Sky Captain, the first movie to ever not have a single prop.

@ 18 and 22

Montage fail. That was the updated Death Star explosion, not the explosion from the 1977 version.

Funny how the early black and white special effects looked more realistic than Avatar. Too bad James Cameron didn't hire Melies.

I liked the music a lot. It strongly reminds me of "Theme from Blue I/II" by COIL. Thanks for the Blue Man reference. Although it seems to be a remix of the song in youtube video.

Okay. COIL -or- "Hallucination Generation" by Gruesome Twosome, each of which reminds me of the other.

That's all I wanted to say.
Seacrest out.

wait this was made like this year so how is it from a hundred years ago? think it through gw

Must See!!!

As already pointed out, this was total fail for not including a Matrix clip. They also left out monster makeup (Frankenstein), animatronics (TMNT) and any advances in animated features (Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story).

http://www.linksoflondons.uk.com/

good clip, although WAYYYY too short to show all of the technical advances in special effects in movies over the last 100 years

i don't understand why they didn't put the matrix in there with the use of multiple cameras for slow motion (bullet time) rotation, i.e. the first time Neo dodges bullets...
