In a no-holds barred, knock out, drag out cage track fight, we've got the much anticipated Train vs. Tornado matchup! In the red corner, weighing in at a couple trees, a really confused cow and a bunch of rain, THE TOOOOOORNADO! And in the blue corner, weighing in at more tons than I can count or even fathom with my animal brain, THOOOOOMAS. THE. TAAAAAANK ENGINE!
So, who will win?
Hint: Dora, I've the feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. That's right folks, WE ARE OUT EXPLORING UNCHARTED TERRITORY. CHOO CHOO!

@3
I hope your comment means you know something about trains... How can you stop a train going at that speed when he probably only had about 20-30 seconds best chance at seeing a tornado drop from the sky.
Where are all the loser internet people? How long does it take to stop a fully loaded fast moving train?

That tornado must've been alot smaller than the one GW posted a while back with the guys in the SUV because the SUV barely moved...
10. Mr Hobbes - July 7, 2009 4:35 PM
I'm pretty sure it takes something like a mile of track for a train to stop.

@17 Yes, the family of drifters which took up residence in one of the cars was tossed around, the father sustained a fatal head injury and one of the 3 sons was thrown from a car and was found hours later dead from blood loss.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max was on a train that was out of control and had a crazy computer driving it, and the only way it wasn't going to smash into the station was if Max could stump it with a riddle.
28. Stuey - July 7, 2009 7:25 PM
So was the train blowing its horn at the tornado?
29. Geek of the net - July 7, 2009 7:38 PM
Hmm, I know that there seems to be a great lack in mental accuity amongst the average geekologie commentor......but seriously enough with the Dora the Explorer comments already. Yes we all get it, your simpletons.
And to those who use a brain cell to comment, thank you for that!

Please take that goddamn apostrophe out of "shadows" and put it in "it's".
Usually I don't care about this sort of stuff but because you post the exact same intro with the exact same mistakes on every single article it's been niggling at me like a dick in the ass for months.

@3 The conductor might not have even seen it coming. It could have come from the side -- it's impossible to tell exactly what is happening since the camera is facing back towards the train instead of having the dash cam looking forward where the conductor's, and engineers, eyes are facing.
The dispatcher (possibly female @16) should have told the train crew about high wind speeds and possible tornado at which point (Been a long time since I've read my rule book so might be and probably am wrong) they would probably either stop where they are or stop at the next siding.
@28 The train was blowing the whistle for a crossing that you can see at 0:49.
@17 I'd be surprised if the engineer and conductor didn't have a few back or neck problems after that. All depends on speed at which the cars caught up to the engine and how much experience they both had to expect an impact and brace for it. Either way, makes me glad I wasn't on the train crew at the time.
40. Ciao - July 8, 2009 7:18 AM
yikes, it looks like it was a clash of two trains vs this tornado.

45. Leonidas - July 8, 2009 11:19 AM
@29: are you perhaps referring to "acuity?" If you're only using *a* brain cell to comment, please don't.
46. jessepko - July 8, 2009 11:37 AM
That was awesome, but why the hell was a camera mounted on top of the train?
47. Sais - July 8, 2009 2:25 PM
@46 For evidence. When a train has an accident at a crossing at grade or anywhere. Plus they use those from time to time to determine whether a train crew broke a rule in order to fire them. Frankly, the camera is one of the least things that is recording every second on a train. The train records speed, throttle notch, air pipe. Keeps track of when air is set, GPS and other fun, and extremely annoying, stuff like that.
48. Um...TE - July 8, 2009 9:40 PM
Actually, the engine did just fine against that punk-ass tornado.
