Jul 26 2009Scientists Fear Robots Are Getting Too Smart

How would you like to wake up to this guy staring at you? You wouldn't, would you? Okay, how about the guy with the phone? I give him a maybe. Anyway, some scientists (the smart ones) fear that robot intelligence is going too far and we must do something to stop them before they stop (read: kill) us.
Impressed and alarmed by advances in artificial intelligence, a group of computer scientists is debating whether there should be limits on research that might lead to loss of human control over computer-based systems that carry a growing share of society's workload, from waging war to chatting with customers on the phone.
[They] generally discounted the possibility of highly centralized superintelligences and the idea that intelligence might spring spontaneously from the Internet. But they agreed that robots that can kill autonomously are either already here or will be soon.
That's right, AUTONOMOUS KILLER ROBOTS. You remember Twiki from Buck Rogers? He was one. Bidi-bidi-bidi!
Thanks to joe, Red, Daniel, Carmen, jabberw0ck, Rogue Cheddar, Retroprofile, Sarah, Princess Padme's Masturbation Fantasy and Patrick, who all help me fight the good fight. Fight first, pizza party second.

I don't really see what's wrong with killer robots, as long as they don't eat us afterward. Just look at the terminator. He turned out to be a pretty nice guy. He just needed to get all that killing/blowing-things-up stuff out of his system.

NORTH Korean robot makers might.
But if they're as effective as their ICBM/satellite launchers, I don't worry for a while...

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene from the movie Never Beck Down where Max found that when he got hurt Baja felt the pain. After they noticed this, they started masturbating at inopportune times for each other.
33. Yep - July 27, 2009 7:24 AM
Sorry to say, but I trust robots a lot more then humans. At least when a robot kills you he dose not have some bull shit justification of how god told him he can get some poontang in haven if he dies it.

Now you listen to me, lover of robots. You don't blow your money on those comic books, you understand? They don't do you a damned bit of good, and the nude mags, you're gonna be inheriting mine when you're 16 anyway. Now look, the junk food and the candy just rots your teeth, gives you bad breath, and the girls run like hell. Stay the hell away from buying any rock TV shirts, or hip hop gear, or anything like that. Arcade games — pick out one that you can do, okay? ONE that you can do as opposed to a whole bunch of them that you don't know what the hell you're doing. Techno music just puts a hole in your brain — are, are you listening to me? Look at me when I'm talking to you

Yeah I noticed the monkey on the treadmill in the background as well, I thought it added a new context to the photo.
The robot is actually the elderly boss of this lab, and the human to the right is its lowly PA. The monkey on the treadmill is a step on the way to enslaving humans, the real research of this lab.
@ 20. Frank:
I think the point is that South Korea are advanced robot weapon builders (they have a "Aliens Directors Cut" style Samsung brand automed turret already built. And robots do not recognize the feeble human concept of "Countries".

50. MarsHottentot - July 27, 2009 3:05 PM
Yeah, I started worrying when they made that robot that had a child's developmental skills (i.e. - it LEARNS from it's environment) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE2VCwYDjx0. I'm glad I'm not alone. Pandora's box is open, though, and it'll never be closed. There will always be some guy with more brains than common sense out there racing to be the next God.
51. amber - July 28, 2009 8:59 AM
with all the chatter of who posted which number post (especially when the number shows up next to it) i'm beginning to think that if robots DO take over, we wont have the intelligence to stop them.. or really to hold them off temporarily even.. if there is any sign of intelligent life form on this website, contact me- we'll begin an alliance against said robots, and together we shall dominate! or.. something... Mr. Geekologie please join my crew. I shall fail without you.. plus you'd probably come up with the best name for us
52. Wesley - October 8, 2009 10:12 AM
Robots will never be too smart. AI and computer science in general will eventually grow to outstanding proportions. I can see a future within the next 80 years or so where robots are a standard.

Yes that is always a scary part of the revolution of the robots, they can develop their own idea and begin doing what they want. Great article.
