Jul 22 2009Sadness: Lost iPhone Prototype Drives Chinese Factory Worker To Suicide

And in a bit of sad news, a Chinese factory worker jumped to his death after losing track of an iPhone prototype he was responsible for shipping to Apple.
The dead worker, Sun Danyong, 25, worked in product communications at Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese firm that makes many Apple products at a massive factory in the southern city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.
Sun was responsible for sending iPhone prototypes to Apple, and on July 13 he reported that he was missing one of the 16 fourth-generation units in his possession, the newspaper reported. His friends said company security guards searched his apartment, detained him and beat him, the paper reported.Apple Inc. responded Wednesday by saying its suppliers are required to treat workers with dignity and respect.
Blood phones, just sayin'.

Thanks to Gino, who would have just burned the factory to the ground to cover up the loss. Smart thinking.

No, you weren't first. Even if you were, I would tell you to suck dick in hell.
2. Not worth it - July 22, 2009 1:02 PM
I was going to comment about how of all things, an iphone is not worth it but who knows how long it took him to save up for it. If I lost 5 years worth of savings, I'd be pretty upset too.

WTF. And to think:
All this for a phone.

What ever happened to cutting a square in your chest samurai-style? Ah, the good-old days. Seriously though, this better not delay the next iPhone.

Given that he is from a culture that feels extreme shame, just imagine how it would feel if the whole world thought you were an industrial sabateur. On top of that being locked in a room of your own house being beaten while rent-a-cops rifle through all your belongings.... Best part is that the company is firing the head of security (like it was his idea to begin with...) as a scapegoat. That company sucks ass in my opinion... seems way better to shame a man to death than just do a civil investigation.

Stop blaming Apple and blame China. This is how they treat their people over there. It's not "Work to live;" it's "Live to work." And their job is their life. It's the same kind of culture where students commit suicide over bad grades.
Check out the current issue of TheOnion.com for their look at China. They have it dead-on.

YOU WANT THE TRUTH!
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!
19. Pew³ - July 22, 2009 1:40 PM
Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and curse the Marines; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Jeff, did you just cite the Onion as a news source? LMFAO. Their satirical commentary is usually point on, but don't cite them as a source for an argument.
PS - Apple hired this company, in China. I blame them both. Apple I can do something about (well, something miniscule).
22. MechanicalApe - July 22, 2009 1:47 PM
so no one's made a rotten Apple pun?

Oooohh! The 4th generation Iphone? I heard that thing can open portals and you can use it to time travel, but only on the AT&T network, though. I was waiting for the unlocked one that can use another network. The last guy I knew who was testing that newer Iphone tried the time travel app and lost his left foot in the process. Not quite figured out yet, that's why they're pissed he lost one of the prorotypes.
Also, it is awesome that companies let 25 year olds living in apartments take 16 prototypes home so they can drop them off at post offices at their leisure. That's just incredibly awesome management at work there, folks!
28. abacus - July 22, 2009 2:40 PM
What if they only made 15 and forgot to tell him that?
29. ch4p3l - July 22, 2009 3:09 PM
As for the dude that killed himself...f.u.c.k. him. No loss.
My question is since when does China do business with a country it doesn't recognize? Such as...Taiwan. The article said, "Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese firm ". When did that happen?
30. Ollie Williams - July 22, 2009 3:18 PM

Your mom.

Riiiiight. He killed himself.
Like I'm going to believe that.
32. Hudson - July 22, 2009 4:10 PM
He was probably thrown from the window by the same security guards who detained and beat him. Remember what happened to China's State FDA chief when he gave the okay to approve unsafe medicine? FIRING SQUAD.
33. doug white - July 22, 2009 5:12 PM
He was probably sad.
34. J-red - July 22, 2009 5:27 PM
No an hero posts? Wow. I guess it was a slightly different situation, but still.
The real loss that Apple feels, however, is a brilliant young mind that can no longer be controlled by the iConspiracy.

37. J - July 22, 2009 11:24 PM
@29
"No loss"? That's cold. He had his apartment searched, then got arrested and beaten. Are you completely incapable of sympathy and empathy?
As for China: While most of the world recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign country, China's government sees it as just another part of China.

39. NVG - July 23, 2009 3:20 AM
odd...
There were 16 prototypes, right?
Why kill yourself when they still have 15 more?
40. Jaded Icon - July 23, 2009 7:34 AM
Sounds like corporate espionage to me. It's unfortunate for this young man, but looking at these comments I have a strong suspicion that people can't tell the difference between Chinese culture and Japanese culture. Ritual suicide was never really a Chinese heritage.
41. Jeff - July 23, 2009 2:05 PM
#21, have you even looked at the Onion lately?! "LMFAO..."
