Jul 28 2009I'd Type With It: Font Created By Driving A Car

iq-font.jpg

Personally, I've always wanted a font created out of my handwriting because I have the cutest damn handwriting in the world (I even dot my i's with hearts!), but hey, a driving font, that's cool too.

Graphic designers Pierre Smeets and Damien Aresta, known collectively as pleaseletmedesign, teamed up with professional race car driver Stef van Campenhoudt to...create a font.

As you can see Campenhoudt did the "writing". The 4 dots on the roof of the car was tracked in real time using a camera and a custom software designed by fellow artist Zachary Lieberman of openFrameworks.

If you ask me, I'd say it turned out pretty well. So go ahead -- ask me. I think it turned out pretty well. Told you! I AM A MAN OF MY WORD.

Hit the jump for a video of the font creation in action, complete with soundtrack that gave me an aural seizure.

Thanks to naas and Ramin, who created their own fonts using trained dogs and cats.

Who listens to the crap that is the soundtrack of this?

Can you seriously imagine anyone have a CD full of it driving around listening to it.

"man, this is the sound of the FUTURE, get used to it"

SCREW that. Just cause something is new doesn't mean it is good.

Where's Shumway today? It's a little quiet in here

would be cool if they didnt make it with a shitmobile

...zzzzzZZZZZzzzzz........

@naas

I'm here. I'm also very busy not giving a shit about these stories today. Sorry pal.

@post

Stupid shit that people do with their spare tires.

Ahh good...

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never BAck Down where Max is teaching the noobs at work how to fill out an expense report. He shares the fake receipt font and teaches them all about falsifying credit card receipts. They go out to Sams club, buy some register tape and also some restaurant order books. One lucky bastard finds a cash register at a garage sale, and the first receipt he falsifies is to get paid for buying the register.

That is cool as hell. (Music not so much.)

That font is not that special looking, kinda normal at that. Agreed Epic Waste of Time & Money for those "Font Designers". Sounds like a cool job, but they are running short on ideas it looks like.

However, when he writes the word "Geekologie," the i is dotted with a smiley face. True story.

It's cool and all, but it's a lot of effort to make a car-font when they clearly ALREADY DREW OUT WHAT THEY WANTED IT TO LOOK LIKE BEFORE THEY STARTED!!!

I also like how the credits were in Arial.

Did anyone else read the last sentence in the post as saying "anal seizure"?

Because I was kind of excited to hear what would cause that.

Cheese.

Meh....

Z4 add ripoff

First of all, the font at the end of the video is not Arial, noobs.

Second, of course they drew out what they wanted first. The purpose was to have the resulting finished product be made by something other than a font DRAWN with one's own hand or mouse. The output of the final product reflects the exact travels of the vehicle, rather than a pen & paper, or a mouse (be it freehand or by point-to-point vector design). That, in concept, is a valid and novel idea.

I like how you all hate on it, though. Tell me, what sort of ground-breaking things have you done lately? What's your greatest accomplishment thus far? Have you ever been the first to do anything? Anything at all? No. So quit your ridiculously jealous and immature bitching. At least these guys thought of something creative and followed through on it. That's more than I can say for a bunch of kids bitching about how "lame" something is on a website.
