Neither bryozoa nor Tubifex look like this thing.

Bryozoa build stony skeletons of calcium carbonate. I didn't see stony skeletons, but a soft mucus membrane.

Tubifex is wormy. This wasn't really a worm kind of thing, but a mucus ball kind of thing.

If I had to bet money though I would bet Tubifex over Bryozoa.

It is defiantly not bryozoa. Bryozoa simply do not move like that. So what is it, then?

They are clumps of annelid worms, probably tubificidae or a similar sub-species. They're usually found in loose soil, especially around highly polluted steams and rivers.

It looks like they got into the sewer system and in the absence of adequate soil, are coiling around each other. The strange, alien-like movements you're seeing is the result of one worm contracting, triggering a contraction in all the other worms at almost the same time.

plus if the contractions are originating in the middle wouldnt you have to trigger that worm to get an even simultaneous contraction.. and it would be impossible to trigger that worm, not to mention no one is touching anything.

@76 - I hadn't noticed the post from #63 until you mentioned it, but had read the article. Regardless, I would have came to the same conclusion on my own.

If you look closely at the mass during the contractions, you can clearly see the individual worms that constitute it around the edges, and even toward the middle of the mass, itself.

Also, as quickly as it happens, it's very difficult to pinpoint where the contractions originate, even when viewing the video frame by frame, so assuming they originate in the middle of the mass is a flawed assumption. The initial contraction could be caused by anything from the heat of the camera's light, to vibration in the pipes (invertebrate phyla have been known to respond to both types of stimuli).

As for the "membrane" surrounding the masses, annelids have mucus-secreting glands in their epidermis that serve to protect their skin. It's not difficult at all to imaging that such a large mass of these worms, moving and writhing together could easily produce enough mucus to form the "membrane" coating you're speaking of.

Not to mention, slime molds (which is a little confusing in itself, as they are not fungi) *do not move like this*, or this fast. When migrating, they average about +/- 1 mm every hour or so. To see that kind of movement, you'd need a time-lapse recording.

Furthermore -

"Most annelids' longitudinal nerve trunks include giant axons (the output signal lines of nerve cells). Their large diameter decreases their resistance, which allows them to transmit signals exceptionally fast. This enables these worms to withdraw rapidly from danger by shortening their bodies. Experiments have shown that cutting the giant axons prevents this escape response but does not affect normal movement." - Invertebrate Zoology.

^ This seems to almost exactly describe what's happening in the video.

It's a large FAKE sewer pipe that someone made. Probably sitting in their garage. The contractions are caused by pulling what appears to be either a piece of string or a wire.

Fast forward to 1:49 of the video and watch above the ball. You can CLEARLY see the stringer/wire being tugged on to make the movement effect occur.

Also note that every single one of these is mounted on a spot where 2 pieces of pipe meet. Gives them room to cause the movement.

Another notable spot is at 1:01. Right above the words "cameron village" it looks very metallic like a mount of some time. The goo around the ball falls off.

And lets be COMPLETELY serious for a second...sewer water doesn't look like it came from the damn tap. All of that water in that pipe was 100% crystal clear like it came out of a freaking faucet 2 seconds prior.

Moral of the story?

My guess is that it is some form of fungus or coral. Judging by the way it keeps sucking up water it might be a sponge (not the celuloid kind). It probably lives off the bacteria in the polluted water. Unless conditions change it will continue to grow. The quick swelling of the thing that you see here isn't it growing. It's just taking in water. Later it will probably release it again but it's not shown here. If it continues to grow it will block the passage so it needs to be removed. But it has to be removed with care because if it is a fungus then it will be infectious. Thanks to the damp conditions though, I don't think you have to worry about air-born spores.
