Jun 2 2009XBox's Project Natal: You ARE The Controller
XBox announced Project Natal at E3 yesterday and, hooray. Basically it's a video camera capable of full-body tracking so that you can punch and kick and break your television to your heart's content. This is a video of the possibilities. Also, there's another video after the jump that introduces Milo, which appears to be some kind of pedo-program that makes it easier to troll the interweb for 12-year old boys. Because, let's face it, AOL chatrooms are beat, yo.
Hit the jump for the other video that made no sense and not just because I stopped paying attention and went to heat my burrito (ladies?) after thirty seconds.
Thanks to Julian, Brian and Marc, who all prefer a regular controller.

Amazing! She can see her reflection in the TV!!!!
I can see my reflection in the TV too, when it's off.
I just can't see my reflection in mirrors. Or go out in sunlight.
And no I don't sparkle.

Discuss.

LOL @5.
Why is it steadely becoming un-cool to hold a controller and sit and do nothing while you play video games? Can't I sit my fat ass down and play a normal game now a days lol?!? When I get done with a hard day at work, that last thing I want to do is jump around like a drunken circus monkey to play my games!! Does look cool though lol! I will try it.

@3 its more like x-box took Sony's eye toy, and Nintendo's TV mounted mic. Duct taped them together and polished it up.
It might be fun but what about FPSs like halo?

17. kzpokey - June 2, 2009 3:10 PM
this is an interesting idea...thanks wii...but the video is awful! it looks like a cheesy commercial from the 90's with updated technology. also i wonder when a release day would be for something like this? 2020?
18. Adam - June 2, 2009 3:19 PM
the 360 already has a camera, and it sucks. As to playing games with a camera, that sucks too. I like playing games while sitting on my butt, using a controller. I hate games that require some stupid gimmick to control it. Like the DS requiring you to use the touch screen for character movement when the D-pad is right there... Why? Why must every game be based on gimmicks now?
Oh, because it appeals to the lowest common denominator, and that's how you sell...
19. testudinis - June 2, 2009 3:23 PM
kinda reminds me of HAL 9000

if they manage to pull this off, them it'll be awesome. that skating game looked pretty cool. but there was that other box at the end, it looked like an extra box you'd have to buy. it better not be too pricey, or it'll be hd-dvd all over again.
22. Kieren - June 2, 2009 3:30 PM
I watched this on Xbox Live earlier and thought then il definitely end up kicking my TV half way across the room. I hope not though. Should be good for any games with hand to hand combat. And should be awesome with Left for dead 2!!!
23. Ollie Williams - June 2, 2009 3:32 PM
God I can't wait to play this high.

It did more then even possible. So this is FAKE!
Like the reflection wtf was that? The camera can't film 90 degree that is impossible.

32. mike - June 2, 2009 4:38 PM
yea, and i too can film a commercial where the actors have already watched what has happened in the video game, and perform it at the same time under the guise of "video recognition"
suck on that bitches!
33. Anon - June 2, 2009 4:49 PM
It's not like the eye toy.
The eye toy was a rip-off Dreameye if thats the implication.
The eye works in 2d and colour changes Natal senses 3d so it includes depth and doesn't rely on colour changes so not limited that way
34. Cap'n Jack - June 2, 2009 4:57 PM
This is obviously a niche product aimed at pulling in the lucrative market Nintendo has been able to appeal to for the past 2 or 3 years. Don't expect this to technology be implemented in Halo any time soon, if ever. It's clearly only going to be available for certain kind of titles and for the menu interface.
Should be fun, but I'm really skeptical about the vocal recognition and the "conversation" with an avatar. That seems like hype and it seems pretty doomed. As it stands, the character only has a list of pre-programmed things to say, so I can't imagine there would be much flexibility. Plus, in case you didn't recognize him, that was Peter Molyneaux, and he has a tendency to hype sliced bread as if it was the solution to world hunger and the conflict in the Middle East.
35. Jim Jones - June 2, 2009 5:56 PM
@34:
I thought that looked like Molyneaux. And you're right. He will talk about inventing the sky but when it rolls out it's basically a painted umbrella or something.
36. Jaded Icon - June 2, 2009 5:56 PM
@ 34
You ARE Peter Molyneaux! Nice try but we are not fooled.....or amused.

This is a good idea, but like always, it will end up screwed ; _ ;

What is up with all the haters?
1-to-1 motion control without the controller sounds amazing. If they can pull it off then this is going to be the future of gaming and will open a door to much more. Wouldn't you rather play a game that made you feel like you were the actual character in the game, controlling not through button presses but through actions. Right now the only downside there is for this is for the lazy gamers who would rather exercise their thumbs playing games instead of becoming part of the game.
If it works.

Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like to be jumping around and whiffing air with my legs and arms when I'm playing video games. If I wanted to exercise, I'd have sex or you know... exercise normally, like I already do 5 days a week. I hate the wii too.
It might be worth it just to hear about the injuries of people overextending their knees and tearing ligaments trying to kick and punch AIR.

But,
How acceleration is controlled by this little girl ? She turns the wheel, she shifts gears, but gas ? Breaks ?
I wonder if people would stop playing video games du to hyper-extenuation... the third times you run on a wall while playing prince of persia and you're out.
61. Kandii~Mann - June 18, 2009 1:40 AM
first of all, remember xbox has girls night on certain wednesdays, project natal is totally different from the eye toy since natal will recognize 3D body movement unlike the eye toy whihc only recognizes 2D movement of the user, secondly, as soon as you walk into the room and in front of the xbox camera, you will automaticaly be signed into your profile and turn your system on, seeing as how it will recognize individually 5 different voices which can be in the same room all at once.
pretty neat oh if you look more into project natal.
:)
sony's new camera also being released this year will also be something more of another eye toy.
just a piece of crapola.
