Jun 26 2009Vroom Vroom?: Piaggio's 3-Wheeled Scooter

Two wheels in the front, one in the back -- that's crazy talk! But not for this Piaggio scooter, which looks eerily like the lovechild of my moped and Darth Vader's Segway.
The Piaggio MP3 500 Scooter ($9,000) features a unique three-wheel design, providing a more stable, secure, and easier ride. Features include a 493cc engine, a maximum speed of 89mph, 55-57 mpg gas mileage, a lean angle of 40 degrees, 20% less braking distance than traditional two-wheeled scooters, and aggressive looks that will help you stand out from the Vespa crowd.
I really want one, but I know that it would kill me. Well technically IT wouldn't kill me, it would be hitting the bottom of the canyon.
Piaggio MP3 500 Scooter [uncrate]
Thanks to naas, who once popped a wheelie and crashed into a telephone pole. He limped from the scene.

wait. that thing looks backwards. i would totally end up riding that thing the wrong way. why is the single wheel in the back?
3. Kiwewn - June 26, 2009 1:37 PM
'features a unique three-wheel design' im sure ive seen a scooter like this before. These are still freakin cool though
4. naas - June 26, 2009 1:38 PM
...limped from the scene, came back for the scooter, decided it was too broke to mess with, pulled the telephone pole out of the ground(for being in the way), watched all the power in the next town go out, then screamed 'wireless bitches' at them all night.
It's true, but I love wheelies

Chariots of FIRE!!
Wait, it says it's a scooter, but don't you need a motorcycle endorsement? It's over 250cc...
Either way, it's still gheyyy. I knnnnnooooooooooww!!
7. Leonidas - June 26, 2009 1:57 PM
The gas mileage stinks for a scooter, and compared to other 500cc's it's pretty damn slow too. DO NOT WANT!

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never BAck Down where Max had a moped race, with Baja on the back. Against Dr. Daystrom on a 3 wheeled Blackula Scooter, carrying Foxy Brown on the back. It was a race to Del Taco's and back. Dr. Daystrom lost the race because they use so much garlic at Del Tacos he was unable to approach it.

@9 I saw a little guy behind the bushes in the backyard with a pair of scissors, right next to the cable box
11. naas - June 26, 2009 2:13 PM
Do they use a lot of garlic at Del Taco? I haven't been to one in years
12. Pew³ - June 26, 2009 2:19 PM
If you can't operate a two wheeled scooter, then you have no business being on the road with one of these anyway. Extra wheels are bad.
Bad extra wheel, bad!

You are a retard, or have more money than sense if you buy this. $9000? you can get a Honda CBR1000rr for that.

This came out ages ago! (125cc and 250cc in 2006, 500cc in 2007)
btw these are so much fun ( I took one for a test ride). They have awesome levels of grip, and you can almost get your knee down, or because of all the front end grip you can power slide round corners instead!!!
(disclaimer - I didnt try to powerslide it myself as it wasnt mine)

3-wheeled scooters can be found in Europe. Not as common as 2-wheeled obviously, but given the masses of people that use them, there pretty common.
Also, this scooter died shortly after the photo was taken.

3 wheelers tend to be less stable than their 2 or 4 wheeled counterparts. I'll pass.
19. stony - June 26, 2009 3:17 PM
I've seen a lot of these in France.

I know right, I see these daily in amsterdam, where I live YAY
21. Rik - June 26, 2009 3:25 PM
@18
That's where you're wrong. This 3 wheeler is stable as hell. Those two front wheels actually turn at angles, it doesn't stay static that way. So you don't have to turn the handlebar at awkward angles, you just lean into a turn the way you would a normal bike, but because it has more road contact and wide base, it has more stability, letting you go corners without even the risk of skidding or fishtailing.
22. Veskit - June 26, 2009 3:49 PM
Its a Fu***n scooter. Never ever, ever cool. Get a proper bike.
23. johnny k - June 26, 2009 4:09 PM
these are pretty common in france, i confirm.
easy to use, more secure than a trike (you can slide, but not fall), easy to park, less consumption than any car.
This is why people use it to go to work in crowded cities.
24. Tukson - June 26, 2009 4:20 PM
Never understood the want for really expensive scooters. Seriously... for $9k you can get a really nice motorcycle, that atleast has the ladies looking rather than just pointing and laughing.
25. GINOMAGANTUAN - June 26, 2009 4:33 PM
yeah they drive them things all over here in italy...
26. livingjetlag - June 26, 2009 4:44 PM
Banking into turns and not falling over is for sissies. Long live the 3rd wheel! Ow!
27. Anonymous - June 26, 2009 6:11 PM
Well besides from falling over on every turn or having hardly any traction in the back I would say this would be a pretty cool bike.

hi i'm from france and this model is quit popular here but it's 2 years old too, they had done a 1st model but they made a new one recently with the front wheel more spaced. in fact in france U can drive a 125cc with the same driver licence as your car but for more than 125cc u need a 2wheel driving licence. with the new space i read that u can drive any cc with a car drivin licence

@31 Yes, we've been able to get them in America for a while as well. Sorry, GW, but this post requires the obligatory "OLD!" comment!
33. Releasethehounds - June 27, 2009 12:22 AM
Ugly and stupid. Get a real motorcycle. It's more embarassing than riding a moped.

36. bandageboy - June 28, 2009 3:47 AM
I have never seen a single person riding one of these that does not look like a complete twat! yeah you'll stand out from the vespa crowd, but only because we won't have you anywhere near us. I took the training wheel off of my bike when I was 3!!

38. GLADIATOR - June 28, 2009 1:52 PM
For the people arguing that they should buy a real bike i.e. motocycles
1. Scooters are cheaper;
2. Great on gas;
3. And do not cost much to ensure.
In this day and age, saving some dough is more cooler especially with the economy being what it is. I am personally thinking about picking up a scooter for the spring/summer

Scooters are great for the city - CVT gearbox, so it's just twist and go. The three wheeler - meh. Expensive, and one of the good things abpout a scooter is they are small and easy to park. Still, the increased stability is a Good Thing. Not everyone can be a skilled rider, so maybe te three-wheel is a good compromise.
And the way the wheels tilt when you lean is v. freaky - I tried one in the shop.
40. Leonidas - June 29, 2009 10:16 AM
@39: So sorry, but no. This thing's fuel economy is pathetic (my buddy's car—a Japanese 1-liter—gives way better fuel economy and performance than this thing). This thing also costs the same as many high-end superbikes, so it sucks all round.

Saw one on the street yesterday, couldn't help but wonder what the hell the love child of an ATV and a motorcycle was doing on the streets, but I suppose now I know.
