Jun 30 2009Miss You: The Pirate Bay Has Been Sold

The Pirate Bay, one of the world's best known torrent search portals, is being sold to some Swedish firm. It will no longer be so piratey.
Global Gaming Factory X AB, a Swedish firm that runs Internet cafes and game centers, plans to buy The Pirate Bay for 60 million kronor (~$8 million), twice the fine that was slapped on The Pirate Bay defendants by a Stockholm court earlier this year....the new owners plan to make it a legal service that allows "content providers and copyright owners [to] get paid for content that is downloaded via the site."
"Legal service"...."paid for content"....they better change the name.
Pirate Bay sold, to become more like Carnival Cruise Lines [arstechnica]
Thanks to Thumperchica and Zombie Pirate LeChuck, who agrees this isn't even Disney Pirate's Bay any more.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene int he movie Never Back Down where Max was supposed to go sailing with Baja and her family. He was late, and when he caught up, found that the family was captured by pirates one of which looked suspiciously like Frank Costanza. He was able to defeat the pirates, and win the trust of Baja's dad.

They want copyright owners to get PAID for content? Why don't they just come to my house and have sex with my mother, too? Payment indeed.
I am disinclined to acquiesce to their request. Set sail for Isohunt or something.

can't believe how hard they got slapped with a fine
don't think they will ever stop piracy on the net. it would take a total reinvention of the model for the reasons behind why people pirate.
22. manders - June 30, 2009 12:47 PM
Piracy will never be stopped! :) They've found ways before it was all public and mainstreamed, and now that 8 year olds know more about a computer than i do, it's not going to stop.
@21 haven't been on here long, but am starting to love daisy

So... no-one remembers Napster? Popular illegal download service that got busted, then came back as a legal download thing that quickly faded to obscurity? Perhaps these guys will turn a profit, but not a big one.

41. Danny - July 3, 2009 3:30 AM
Here are my hopes:
-it stays free
-quality standards are put in place
-people earn benefits for uploading and seeding
As it stands, however, it'll probably turn out to be a pretty lame site. Didn't BitTorrent.com offer torrents that you pay for?
Good thing private torrents still rock.
42. Yeags - July 3, 2009 6:03 PM
It's not like there aren't dozens of other torrent sites, but the pirate bay was the best. It was always easy to get whatever you needed fast. Other sites just don't have enough seeders to make it worth your time. Pirate bay never had that problem.
Though I suppose once the pirate bay goes under or legitimizes or whatever, more people will migrate to the other torrent sites which will also help improve seeding. In a way, pirating will never be shutdown. It will just adapt.
