May 2 2009DO NOT WANT: Worst MacBook Pro Ever

worst macbook ever.jpg

Ryan went to Best Buy to buy a MacBook Pro. And he did. Or so he thought. Then he brought it home and realized it was a brick. A real brick! Still, it's a step up from rocks.

When I got home I opened the box and found a paving stone packed with bubble wrap, instead of the Macbook Pro. I returned to the store and the manager, "Keith", was not too willing to help me out. He kept falling back on the line "Apple seals the boxes, not us. Take it up with Apple."

I have sent an email to Best Buy corporate and have contacted my credit card company. Unfortunately, they can't do anything until the charge posts. So right now, I paid $2164.89 for a very nice red brick.

ZOMG, I've burnt stores to the ground for less. Like that drug store that was out of Magnums. Okay, that never happened. But if it did....

I wouldn't know what to do with all that penis!

$2164.89 Paving Stone in a MacBook Pro Box Looks Nice, But Won't Run Photoshop [consumerist]

Thanks to Jeremy, who thought he was buying a cinder block but it turned out to be a Ferrari. You lucky dog!

KOCHAM CIE !!

Yay second

I hope KOCHAM CIE isn't some other language for first!!! I'd hate you forever.

On a side note. He should just go toss it through the store window...

Wow that is worse than when I bought my first ipod. It came with a bar of soap and no ipod. Irish spring soap I beleive...

He should totally stage a protest outside that store... then see how fast they fix it

I would keep it. It will be more reliable than a Mac anyway. A better investment.

Finally a useful mac that can utterly destroy windows.

this reminds me of the time that i went to buy a pallet of pavers and came home with a 60" plasma tv, xbox 360, playstation 3, 4 really expensive hookers (don't worry, i knocked their teeth out first) and a case of johnny walker blue label. man was i pissed, that was the lumpiest, shortest lasting patio i've ever laid.

crappy luck ,hope he get's back what he's deserved

on a separate note, i thought the paver was a large chunk of some spam like substance before i read it...imagine that...someone should go buy a camera and replace it with uncanned spam and then return it....lovely...

same here naas, the stores need to start xraying the boxes and stuff.

If they just called it the iBrick, the fanboy wouldn't know the difference and would still be exuberant.

I don't believe this. There have been a few of these stories over the past two months. I'm convinced that this guy is trying to shake the store for a free MBP.

they just dont make bricks like they used to... the brick i found in the WII box sold on ebay for double what i bought it for

New model of Mac, and still can't right click...

@7 - Nice.

Doesn't this seem a little sudden after the box of rocks in a Nintendo DS box just a few days ago? Seems like this is a fake copy. Macbook Pro boxes don't rattle, they use foam that fits the laptop snugly. I think you'd need a ton of bubble wrap to make a brick not move around. If this is legit, perhaps the consumer deserves to buy a brick. Also... who buys a mac from Best Buy when you can get 10% off by entering any college university's web address during apple.com checkout.

Best Buy... more like Best Try... play with the technology here, then buy it online for wayyy less!

I don't believe any of these stories.....

Geekologie Writer... Why you got to tease me with that penis refrence?!

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never BAck Down where Max was kidnapped by drug smugglers and tried to escape. His friend DID get away and told Maximus where to find Max. Since they had similar names They rescued Max, with the help of a NYPD detective.

holy shit, ds's and mac's have learned to turn to stone.

I am really sick of hearing about your penis. Surely you can raise the bar a little and talk about something else?

talk about a golden brick scheme

At least the brick is way more useful than the MacBook would have been.

Throw it thru the Best-Buy store's window where the Apples sit. Then get that woman who tried buying a Nintendo to throw rocks at the Nintendo stand.

Ha, I was going to say the same. The brick is worth more than the Mac.

Best Buy is notorious for repackaging and re-sealing returns. I went through 2 printers and 3 portable CD players before I got ones that hadn't been previously opened.

So this guy gets home, swaps out the MBP for a brick, and then pretends it was like that when he bought it. Riiiiight, whatever... He's clearly trying to scam Best Buy, and hopefully not getting away with it the shifty little f*cker.

It reminds me of slipperybrick.com

That's a fake, you can tell because the shadows are all wrong. It reminds me of a scene in the movie Never Back Down...

The Manager lied. The store is a reseller and is to replace any equipment as long as it follows with their return policy. At that point the store puts in a complaint and/or request for reimbursement. If you buy sheets from walmart and realize there is a stain you dont call the manufacturer.. you return them to walmart.

Everything happens for a reason. The face of JESUS might appear on the paving stone and then you can sell it on Ebay for a hefty sum.... =)

ok, on the real i am going to open all my purchases in front of the cashier.

That's what he gets for buying a mac

This guy is so stupid, Mac made a limited edition (only 1 in the world) of the mac pro-bric-case-mod, And he don't even know it, tsssss....

He is so gay

Believe it or not this happens all the time. Many years ago I was a manager at Toys R' Us and this would happen at lest every other month... some lady (yep 9 times outa 10 it's a lady. I guess it's less threatening that way) would like to make a full return for cash. Later the store would check the returns to find a brick, cinder block, or sometimes a whole oven door (they fit perfectly in flat screen tv boxes) instead of the damaged or returned product.

The funny thing is that with chain big box stores like Best Buy, it's company policy to check all returns before acceptance. 95% of all rip off returns are done by a family of a disgruntled coworker trying to score some extra cash, usually for rent... and sometimes drugs.

that really sucks. lol≥.

dig this!

Maybe it's a 50,000 years old brick which dates from Atlantis. It's now worth $5 million.Probably alien put the brick in the box.

@39 Are you a MacBook salesman?

Oh snap! he got the new Mac prototype, which needs no keyboard, no display, no buttons and no power supply! Macs are awsome! This prototype needs work though, as I'm sure they'll slim it down to the thickness of paper.

In other news: Mac reveals ther new Mac Fly. Like a computer from the future, it needs no keyboard, no display, no buttons and no power supply! Plus is thin as paper! Apple engineers explain how they were able to shrink it down from the size and weight of a brick. -Yes, it was difficult at first, since our original prototype was lost...

This isn't news. People tried to return rocks in the box ALL the time.

lol theres no difference between the two.

also to everyone whos saying its photoshoped
1.) might not be the real picture
and2.) why photoshop when i can go into my backyard and grab a brick and put it in the box and take a pic.

What about the poor sap that had to use a mac book while building a sidewalk. No one ever thinks of these things.

Looks like an upgrade to me, he should be thankful!

He should throw that brick through the store window
http://greasykiller.mybrute.com

THis just reinforces the concept of opening the box BEFORE you leave the store.

It's sad that it has come to this, but......CYA.

I'm sorry but I cry total horseshit, made up story.

This happens more often than you think. I had a friend who used to buy computers, take the necessary parts and return the "item". Really, he was keeping the item and handing over Best Buy a box of bricks. This kept up for a while, but eventually he was caught.

it sucks that it had to happen to this poor chap. Best buy definitely is at fault for this one and they should be a little more sympathetic. I mean, the guy just spent over 2 grand on a lousy brick.

@49 - Ali.

You are so full of sh*t. They guy just spent over 2 grand on a MacBook Pro, took it out of the box, replaced it with a brick, and then tried to get his money back.

Best Buy should just tell his to F*CK OFF.

That "brick" would have been rattling around like mad with that small amount of bubble wrap. The guy is a scamming focker.

Who buys Mac's from Best Buy anyways? That's like buying a Mercedes Benz from a Ford dealership. Enjoy your brick.

Ha. That's what you get for being a cheap azz. Everyone knows to buy Macs only from Apple.

Very old trick. Perhaps not the stores fault.

I knew a guy a years ago that would buy electronics. He would get them back to his house, weigh everything (using scales from his other enterprises), and use simple math on the weight distribution to repack the boxes. Almost all intrusion detection labels could be removed delicately with razors, adhesives, heat, steam, acetone, etc. It required lots of knowledge on what the certain things would do and the use of absorbents for vapor and solvents. You could make almost any package look as if it had never been opened. Then return it. As long as you paid cash and returned with a fake ID. Don’t hit the same store too many times, and you’re clear.

He got sent up (from his other enterprises) years ago. I make good money in straight jobs, and so have no interest in the trade. It was always impressive to watch, though.

This person is simply just trying to get money following the WalMart DS fiasco.
Best Buy puts sealed stickers on all of their computers, if the seal is broken, you opened it. Simple as that.

I work for Best Buy,

I sort out/test/ and maintain all the return items and that sort. Everything is tested and verified that it runs properly before its returned to the floor.

Something like this highly doubtful. I'd say get the police involved. I would not cave into this.

I actually had someone return a MBP, before it was returned I checked it out for damage. I actually discovered it wasn't the proper MBP, serial numbers didn't match the box to the product, flat out refused the return. He later spoke to a manager who did allow the return, though i called shenanigans. I didn't resell the product because it wouldn't be right at all. I just Devo'd out the product.

Shit happens in retail, remote chance this story is true, but I'd contact Apple and find out a way to get this resolved.

Oh and everything is sealed with a manufacturer's sticker or open box items have a inspected by Best Buy tape. I created my own special stickers for such items as well. If my sticker is broken on a product and there is a problem like this. Customer trying to rip off the company

That sucks. It def just comes down to he said/she said.

55 & 56 - Assuming he's telling the truth, it's most likely that the theft occurred at Best Buy. It's not a far stretch for an employee to open the box and reseal it with the wrong material inside. This exact scenario happened at a Best Buy near me and an employee there was prosecuted. He got caught because a cashier decided to check a box that had been sealed by the aforementioned employee. Again, this is all assuming the guy is telling the truth.

I work at the corporate office of Best Buy in the complaint department. This is a very old scam. The customer brings a factory sealed product home and pretends Best Buy opened it and replaced it.

56 is more than correct when it comes to the sealed computers, besides, they are practically under armed guard until sold.

If this is a true story (which I highly doubt), the only way to protect yourself is to open your products in the store in front of an employee. Its the ONLY way to be sure.

And 5? Sure. The only thing that will accomplish is to get arrested.

wow
my mac looks the exact same as this one.

and i was wondering why my macbook pro was getting crappy battery time.

now i'm pissed.
it's go time apple.

go time.

Apple is not going to do anything because the guy is a dumbass. I can hear him calling tech support for it now:
"thanx for calling apple this is steve can i get your name?"
-"uuuuhh hi my name's ryan"
"Allright can I get the serial number for the product you're calling about?"
-"uhhh where do I find that? All i have is a brick."
"Sorrry what exactly was that"
-"I bought a macbook air today and found a brick in the box, I just want to swap it out for the computer"
"ok, then you need to return it to the store for the correct product"
-"they said they gave me a computer and to talk to you"
"I'm sorry but we cannot trade a new macbook for a brick"

@59 The constitution protects our right for peaceful protest and as long as they're not obstructing traffic, harassing people, or causing safety hazards there is nothing any level of law enforcement can do. Plus it is great PR for Best buy employees to be presenting themselves as douchebags that don't even understand civil liberties yet work in the complaint department. Fu ck off and die nobody really needs you.

And Fu ck the censorship on a site run by a man wanting to bang dinosaurs

That sucks.
I worked retail as a Assistant store director.
We use to weigh "unopened" items to ensure actual product and to ensure "New product" integrity.
Shortly after the "Brick in the Box" returns started to weigh exactly the expected "gram-mage". At that point we just started to open every piece being returned.
Once I found a Brick in the Box of of the delivery truck from the supplier.

I recommend that you open it in the store at the counter before you leave.
If there is a restock fee it will usually be waved if you exchange because product was defective new from the store.

Buyers beware - Happy shopping

Spelling correction
"Brick in the Box *off of the truck"
Turns out the delivery guy was stealing guns from delivery to local shop and pushing them on the street..
Really have to second guess every one.
Sometimes I spend money and write misc in the check book..

Check your self before you wreck your self

That is why you go to the apple store or order it online.
