May 26 2009Artist Folds Paper To Create Pictures

German artist Simon Schubert folds pieces of paper into beautiful pictures of, uh, stairwells. Each piece takes about a week's worth of work and can sell for up to $6,000. *gathering neighborhood kids in a wagon* Arts and crafts time at the Geekologie Writer's house!
"Most of the people who see the work are surprised that the pictures are created by folding paper, they don't believe it when I tell them.
"Many of them think I've used paint or pencil to create the affect of light and shade. But when they realise the pictures are actually folded they are quite impressed."
Impressive, Simon, it's too bad I'm about to flood the market with child-folded ripoffs! Isn't that right, kids? Kids? *dink dink dittle dee dink dittle dee dink dee dink dee dink * DAMN YOU, ICE CREAM VAN!
Hit the fold for a bunch more.

6. jake lymes - May 26, 2009 3:05 PM
I fold a lot of origami, but never have i thought of an idea like this. Pretty sweet...
7. Varg Vikernes - May 26, 2009 3:13 PM
Holy shit, that's amazing. I am a draftsman and drawing an elevation like that takes hours. I can't believe he folded every line :o
8. GLADIATOR - May 26, 2009 3:14 PM
I'd hate to see what happens if the paper all of a sudden gets wet ...
$6000 epic art failure!

A tumor would most likely be the hardest to copy into fold-image form sort of crap. Which reminds me, i gotta make a sculpture of David in poo form, made out of poo and straight from my rectum - for my exhibit in Prague. See ya there GW.
Also, i can probably do the same kind of crap. folding is easy... i guess.
11. Party Kid 3000 (aka Hannukah Montana) - May 26, 2009 3:24 PM
@7 I can't believe your being such a douche! Holy crap!

I don't buy it.
15. guate6 - May 26, 2009 3:40 PM
That's more intricate than the way they make toilet paper designs.
Oh and he did spell a word wrong, it's "effect" not "affect."
But who's counting...

I can't believe you're being such a douche! Holy crap!
17. jAc - May 26, 2009 3:41 PM
I just folded a piece of paper 4 times and made an exact replica of the cross that Jesus was crucified on. Bidding starts at $100...now.
18. amy - May 26, 2009 3:43 PM
DAMN, these are impressive. Although I gotta ask, does anyone else have a hilarious mental image of the guy standing on a bunch of stairs for hours and hours, wrestling with a piece of printer paper?
19. Golaiths Drink Stirrer (aka STOMPY) - May 26, 2009 3:46 PM
@18
Good point, your reward for your insight is one hour in the broom closet with me for free...
20. captaindash - May 26, 2009 3:50 PM

@20
He's a draftsman that draws elevations... you figure it out and talk to me.
He's either the biggest douche in the face of this planet or that it's now acceptable to give retards access to the internet.
23. naas - May 26, 2009 3:56 PM
@16 ,19 haha
24. STOMPY - May 26, 2009 4:02 PM
@22
He is a draftsman, he draws things probably in CAD, he draws elevations of things... I think I figured it out... you've been drinking again...
I work at an A/E firm and our architechs will draw up sketches and have our CAD technicians (aka draftsman) work on it. I fail to see your point.
25. E of R - May 26, 2009 4:09 PM
So how does one fold circles?
26. architect - May 26, 2009 4:43 PM
So @22 your a retard. Archtiects and designers have to draw elevations, sections, axons, perspectives, etc. all the freaking time. ITS THEIR JOB. Pretty sure he can do more stuff than you can think in aCAD and other arch softwares. I fail to see your point as well
27. McCracken - May 26, 2009 5:01 PM
WoW
28. Jaded Icon - May 26, 2009 5:10 PM
@ 24 and 26
Don't be mad, his wife got f*cked by an draftsman.....and by me. It was good, in a completely forgetable way.
29. Ocelot - May 26, 2009 5:12 PM
Yeah I'm gonna have to go with the experts. You, Party Kid, are a failure. Good day, sir.
30. Quik - May 26, 2009 5:37 PM
@20 Maybe the original number 7 left something so douchey that it had to be removed and a new number 7 was born after 11 made his comment.
...or maybe he just doesn't know what douche means.

but those are pretty good.
36. JOWE - May 26, 2009 7:18 PM
I wonder if he can do stairs?
37. Dylan sprague - May 26, 2009 7:48 PM
@39 you lost the game
38. Clamdigger - May 26, 2009 8:00 PM
What the, how did he fold the circle on the post at the bottom of the stairs?
39. Honky Magoo - May 26, 2009 8:12 PM
I susspect that "folding" isn't entirely accurate. It's probably more like embossing.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max and Baja's dad were eating bacon and cheese at Del Tacos and talking about chicks when Mr. Baja imparted the gem of wisdom, stay away from Tattoed broads. First off, if the cops find their body parts in youyr freezer they can identify them easier, plus an ugly tatoo isn't fun to look at during sex, and third, tattoo ink isn't particularly good for the soil so when you grind them into plant food, you may harm your rhodendron's.
43. amy - May 26, 2009 10:15 PM
@18: Sure, but only if you bring more bacon.
44. asha.Stewart@bishopburton.ac.uk - May 27, 2009 2:19 AM
That is quite impressive, but the fact that is only does staircases and buildings is just.. oh so very german.
45. Roelosaurus - May 27, 2009 2:44 AM
First pic looks like the hall from the mansion from Professor Layton! :-D
46. jay - May 27, 2009 7:13 AM
wow wee this is amazing.....i wonder how long it took
47. Nick - May 27, 2009 7:34 AM
Step 1. You carve the form into wood (which i guess in itself is impressive) 2. You press the paper over the wood. 3. You make money. I take mein hut off to you sir.
48. rodjoh - May 27, 2009 9:10 AM
That's very impressive indeed
But I wouldn't pay 6,000 for that
6 dollars maybe
49. Galtacticus - May 27, 2009 12:33 PM
Awsome job! It doesn't look fake at all! All the shadows are right! Good job!
50. Nero - May 27, 2009 12:35 PM
I see one shadow isn't right. It has to be fold all over again!
51. chimp - May 27, 2009 12:37 PM
the technique is pretty awesome, but the images are total CRAP.. why would anyone spend 6000$ on a bland washed out image of a totally boring perspective of a staircase... ??
52. Receptical - May 27, 2009 7:04 PM
wow thats great... but theres nothing on the paper...
53. burgerhead - May 28, 2009 3:05 PM
good firelighting material though
54. What on Earth - May 31, 2009 10:05 PM
@42 What on earth are you talking about???
55. mary-ann - June 1, 2009 4:20 AM
amazing. amazing and wow might be the only words for this, but if there were any other that would be amazing. ok this is really great.
56. Nar - June 11, 2009 3:07 PM
That's amazing. All i know how to fold is paper airplanes.
http://the-nar.mybrute.com
57. Sa Thorenssen - June 14, 2009 7:58 PM
I did paper foldings similar to this in my spare time in high school.
58. tiffany - July 20, 2009 9:03 PM
I used to create images that look pretty close to this. Not the same things in the images, but the same style. Usually I just used the other side of a pen or paintbrush and just "draw"... it makes creases in the paper that look just like this.
59. madison salisbury - October 25, 2009 9:42 AM
that is really cool ! ! ! how did you learn how to do that ?
60. the wholesale jewellery - January 4, 2010 1:53 AM
It's a good idea .Thank you.
