Apr 20 2009Stephen Hawking Battling Infection, 'Very Ill'

Stephen Hawking, genius extraordinaire and a personal hero of mine (I heard he once piloted his wheelchair through a blackhole unscathed), has been hospitalized and is reportedly "very ill".
[Cambridge University] said Hawking has been fighting a chest infection for several weeks, and was being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the university city north of London.
"Professor Hawking is very ill," said Gregory Hayman, the university's head of communications. "He is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks."
Geekologie wishes Stephen a speedy recovery. No, a lightspeedy recovery. Get well soon, Dr. Hawking.

I hope everything works out. It'd be a real shame for the wold to lose someone of such incredible intelligence.
And Angel Mass is right. Even if (god forbid) we do lose him, he will be with us forever in his research, and in the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere.

this reminds me of the time that frank zappa died before i got to see any of his shows in person. excruciatingly sad.
meaning of course that eventually i was planning on attending cambridge. you know, some day before he planned to retire this year anyways.

When I daydream about the great "what if?" games:
"What if I could cure one person of a horrible disease/ condition?" It is always Stephen Hawking. It would be truly awesome if he could be made whole and live another 20 years.

25. STINK - April 20, 2009 3:30 PM
@14
He's had two ex-wives, so that should give you a guesstimate of how much sex he's had and how good he was at it.
26. Fuzzy Ink - April 20, 2009 3:36 PM
This is terrible news. I certainly hope he recovers.

this is upsetting. @ 4 FCUK YOU ASSHOLE!!!
30. che-che - April 20, 2009 4:47 PM
i heard when hawkins dies, the event will create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe
31. jaime - April 20, 2009 5:11 PM
nooooooooo stephen! don't go!
stay with us!
get better!
32. Andy - April 20, 2009 5:22 PM
I'm sad that the man is dying, I hope he recognizes now that this is his last chance to recognize Jesus as his savior and to repent. Throughout his life, he has chosen to ignore critical evidence that his universe and his world were created by a being outside of time and space.
33. OtterMan - April 20, 2009 5:29 PM
"Throughout his life, he has chosen to ignore critical evidence that his universe and his world were created by a being outside of time and space."
Actually, he's spent his life doing nothing but analyzing "critical evidence". Which is probably WHY he doesn't just say "Oh yeah, it's all down to God."
34. Zira - April 20, 2009 5:35 PM
No! He can't die! Me and my friends still want to know what he sounds like when he is having sex!
My friend does a good impression of what we think it is.
35. Andy - April 20, 2009 5:39 PM
I'd say "seeking" not "analyzing". He's u-turned on black holes because of lack of evidence and now we have theories about parallel universes which are not supported by proven equations in quantum physics. If you want to debate the "Oh yeah" it's all down to God, post your e-mail address and I'll gladly join you!

@29 - WATCH
Don't get too upset with 4. He wasn't actually commenting about Mr. Hawking. If you'll notice, he was caught in a firstard battle.
Actually, yeah get that upset with him, but for a different reason.
38. wazmeister05 - April 20, 2009 6:38 PM
@32
Didn't he say in "a brief history of time" something along the lines of some things cannot be explained by science and that god may well exist? Just wanted to point out that he has never denied the possibility of some sort of god, just his work, and work of other scientists, kinda shows otherwise.
You think S.H. visits websites like this every once in a while? If so get well soon!
39. Gubba - April 20, 2009 7:37 PM
I wish you well S.H. you have one more thing to do. Make a self cooking pop tart. Thanks.

48. AdamYYZ - April 21, 2009 4:50 AM
Turning him on and off?.... Like the STIG? Maybe he is the STIG and just needs to be rebooted...
Some say, that he has anti-matter for breakfast...

*shrug* All we know is he's called THE HAWKING.
