Apr 19 2009Smart Thinking: The Daylight Saving Clock

Denis Guidon's 'Ora ilLegale' clock makes switching between daylight saving time and regular time easy -- you just tilt the timepiece back and forth on its two bases. Pretty clever. Although, personally, I don't keep clocks around the house because I don't adhere to a regular schedule. No, I like to live life on my OWN time. And speaking of which, Friday, time to get drunk! Ha -- what do you mean it's Sunday?
Tipping clock simplifies all of that spring forward, fall back stuff [dvice]
Thanks to Elise, who really makes me work for my tips.

For christ's sake, make up your mind (and time) for the damn firstard. Anyway, I'm surprised nobody came up with this before
6. gamen - April 19, 2009 11:04 AM
Probably because when you change it +/- one hour, you also change it +/- five minutes... not great if you want more than a general idea of the time from your clock.

Not a bad idea. I don't use clocks either. My mouse has a good sense of time - I just follow what he does... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdFb9uidV2U

What a pile of crap.
You knock it without realising, it tilts the other way and you're an hour off.
Your mate comes round and tilts it because he thinks it looks better the other way, you're an hour off.
You drop it, pick it up and put it back the wrong way, you're an hour off.

It's not Daylight Savings time, it's daylight saving time. No "S".
Get an editor.

Great excuse for being late! The daylight saving clock wasn't standing right!

@6 - my thoughts exactly. At 2:00 a.m. when you're supposed to reset your clock, it now becomes 12:55 a.m. or 3:05 a.m. FAIL.

What if someone turns it upside-down? Then you're screwed.

I guess he's never caught on to the fact that cell phones and computers can automatically adjust for that. They're the only clocks I trust.
18. supernova_hq - April 19, 2009 7:53 PM
@17:
Unless you computer auto-synchronises to a remote clock, DO NOT TRUST IT. Computers have some of the worst clocks in them known to man. When the computer is off it uses a small internal clock (just fine), but when it is running, the OS is actually in charge of updating it (that's why the time is read a boot-up and written at shut-down). While it is on, it is using cpu time slices (very inaccurate) to keep track of the time. It is not unheard of for some computers (even modern ones) to go out by 5 minutes in a week or two.
Cell phones are usually the best.

You know, I got to thinking about it, the idea isn't bad, but maybe, if it had a dial filled with water, so that the numbers would always point 12 to up (kinda like a compass on a boat) then it would work. You could easily tell time, AND it would make sense. Also, the not having the minute hand makes sense, so you don't have +/- 5 mins. Hmm, for that matter, you could have a solenoid pendulum in it, with a calendar, so that it would shift the clock itself for DS time. And then... if I think about it even harder, I might go get myself a bacon and egg sandwich with some ketchup.

The site says the clock doesn't have a minute hand, so that +/-5 minutes wouldn't be an issue.
However, the whole knocking it over/accidentally bumping it/someone else shifting it, etc would be a problem.
21. someone - April 20, 2009 11:13 AM
why is everyone going on about the minute hand? there clearly isn't one.
22. Leonidas - April 20, 2009 12:04 PM
@6 & 15: this is only meant for people who are intelligent enough to actually tell time.
