Apr 7 2009GM And Segway Making P.U.M.A. 'Car', Looks Suspiciously Like A Motorized Wheelchair

General Motors and Segway have teamed up to produce what might very well be a slightly modified Hoveround. It's self-balancing like a Segway, but with the style and quality you've come to expect from GM. And as you can see, they do come with the Gob Bluth seal of excitement.
The self-balancing Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (P.U.M.A.) can reach top speeds of 35 MPH, has a lithium battery that lasts up to 35 miles with a single charge, and features vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication for potentially reducing the number of accidents. No word on when or if this'll actually go into production but it's expected to be priced at just 25% that of a regular automobile.
Wow, that is one vehicle (in addition to a seatless bicycle) I can safely say I have absolutely no interest in driving. My God -- could you imagine getting T-boned in that thing? *BOOM* Porterhoused!
GM and Segway's P.U.M.A. unveiled and no, this isn't a joke [engadget]
Thanks to Julian, who successfully rode a Segway down a flight of stairs but then got hit by a bicycle messenger at the bottom and lost a tooth. It was never found.

The geniuses who keep making these stupid vehicles all forget one thing.
Most of this country gets snow!!
I'm not driving around New York in that thing smiling like a moron in -4 degree weather.
5. catch22 - April 7, 2009 9:36 AM
@4 dean (the segway guy) is based in NH, GM in detroit... they get snow in those places, they are just dumb (though the segway can get snow tires)
on a side note, segways are stupid
besides, we all know these wont be allowed anywhere (like a segway or skateboard) unless you work for the post office or are a meter maid...
campus security teams will look badass though
and i agree with #3 if i was parapalegic, id totally rock one of those things

Wow! Only 25% of the price of a regular car! Cars are pretty expensive, but I think I'd rather save up for four times as long. Also, when the battery runs out, that thing looks pretty topple-y. I know it has stabilisers, but I can still picture it falling over backwards, leaving you looking like some kind of retarded accident-prone tortoise.
13. Jules - April 7, 2009 10:00 AM
You know GM is going down when they emulate the "motorized bar stool". At least that was innovative. This is garbage. Anywho, I would rather buy a stool and an engine if I want to die (cost effective unlike this piece of junk).

pathetic

How do you even get in and out that thing? That doesn't seem convenient for a handicap person nor a mall cop... and if you can walk and drive, why would you subject yourself to that thing? Since Will Arnett is driving it Im assuming this is a joke.
28. state transportation fund - April 7, 2009 10:52 AM
Yeah, if you took one of these things out on most roads, you'd end up breaking it in half hitting a pothole. What about speed bumps? Looks like one of those would take that thing out instantly.
The guy in the photo... was that his last moment before being hit by a bus?
29. Milkman - April 7, 2009 10:55 AM
The idea of a city vehicle for green reasons and to cut down on actual car use is kinda good, but at a quarter the price of a regular car they're going to have trouble selling it to anyone but folks with way too much money laying around. Until they bring the price down it would continue to have a niche following only. I also wonder how bad the insurance would be on these because the thing looks extremely prone to people dying inside.

someone out there's wheels are turning (pun intended)
33. Huggy Bear - April 7, 2009 11:41 AM
My question is - the whole idea of the stabilizers is to have a two wheeled vehicle, i.e. a smaller foot print, which is negated by the seat. Why not just add 2 more wheels and ditch the stabilizers and save, oh, I don't know, about 3/4 of the price?
34. catch22 - April 7, 2009 12:02 PM
@33
because the segway people did it....
"we need a vehicle that should have 3 wheels, but we want to make it stupidly more expensive and heavy"
"lest talk to the segway folks"

how is this a 'car'? God, i hate liberals.
if this thing cost a person more than $1,000 you're getting screwed. A little company in India is making an actual car (it even has doors) for $2,500.... they are now making it legal for the USA. IM guessing it will cost $10,000 by the time they meet all the crap regulations in the USA.
36. Blunt Force Trauma - April 7, 2009 1:11 PM
Just found this site and it's comment section. I see it's full of the cerebrally-challenged. People still use the word "liberals"? God, get outta the 80's, man.
Comment number 2 was a doozy: "nice wheel chair........ lazy a$s" I do hope that your are not from the US as that would be contradictory seeing as the US has the most obese people on the planet (behind Australia, that is) with Mississippi being the fattest.

38. Tom - April 7, 2009 2:34 PM
So they say 25% of the cost of a regular automobile - but it can accomodate only 20% of the passengers of a regular automobile, and, from the looks of the prototype, might just about carry 10-15% of the luggage or other cargo, which you'd presumably have to lash to the back with bungee cords.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of smaller, lighter, more efficient personal vehicles (it sickens me whenever I see a colossal great 4x4 offroading steel behemoth being used in ordinary town traffic on a flat, well maintained street with only one goddamned person in it and nothing at all in the cathedral-like trunk) - but not at a considerably higher cost to capacity ratio!

What is really scary is that they say they dont need an air bag since you dont get in wrecks with the V2V tech. What about people? As of today I dont have the verichip so how will they know to not hit me? When will they make everybody have V2V so V2V works? Any word on when they are going to pass another bill to save us all from all this madness?

51. Dmitri - April 9, 2009 2:48 PM
This is either a joke or they are spitting in the face of the entire nation… Is this what GM spent 14 billion dollars taken from our pocket for? This would be a great solution for disabled people if it is considered as new model of the wheelchair… or for the spoiled kids of wealthy parents (GM’s executives, vice-presidents, top-management, etc. who along with oil companies brought our country to the present shameful situation ). It's a new toy, not a serious innovation or concept! These people from GM are being especially shameless and irresponsible because they made this announcement right after Tesla Motor Company’s presentation of Tesla S car which is a real technological and conceptual breakthrough. If we really want CHANGES we (our government ) should stop supporting these betrayers and let them die. Such companies like Tesla Motor are the best alternative solution in term of investments and jobs.
52. Sherrie - April 11, 2009 5:11 PM
Am I the only one, or does this remind anyone of those motorized wheelchairs in Wall-E...You know the ones where people start to ride in these instead of getting up and walking around, and soon they become fat and lazy and lose the ability to walk...all it needs is a little monitor hooked up to the internet....but in all seriousness this looks incredibly dangerous, if these things are going to be on the road/sidewalk....and I thought smart cars were a bad idea.

This is a death-trap. OK imagine this, this thing is pulling out of a McDonalds drive through. After spending 20 minutes trying to reach the window and fighting off stupid people you finally pull out. 13 seconds later you relize in the confusion they forgot your ketchup. You freak out (Food is Your life Fatas$) and get hit by a volkswagen. This collision causes you to lose balance fly through the mcDonalds window into the deep frier where your gas tank explodes. The fireball roasts you into a Big'N'Tasty because you cna't get out of the almost totally enclosed capsule.

Dear Fellow Human beings,
To begin Without Prejudice, the reasons for the American Financial Meltdown were Complex, and clearly not related to the development of motorised wheelchairs.
Segway and/or GM would make a Profit if it produced a "better" motorised wheelchair. There are millions of buyers for a decent, reliable motorised wheelchair. On looking at the supplied picture which you have all used to make your comments, it is clear to a person with knowledge of motorised wheelchair [myself] that the wheel size, coupled with the battery life would be selling points.
Segway/GM Please Note.-
As a person who has relied on a motorised wheelchair for approximately 13years, I can tell you this Segway/GM is worth seriously considering!
It is the Gas Guzzlers which brought GM to its knees. ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID!!! For those of you who were not born and at an age of reason, this was one of the successful Election slogans for Bill Clinton in 1992. Which was the second last time I visited the Beautiful American innocence. Since then you America went through a barren period and a lack of leadership.
The customers for Gas Guzzlers are now unable to afford to waste more hard earned income on products which cost too much to refill at the Petrol/Gas station!
It was Not motorised wheelchairs!!!
Where can I get my hands on a Segway GM??? Hurry up and get to market. After a brief glance over some of the clearly unwise comments, particularly those relating a motorised wheelchair to food, is quite unhelpful, especially to those waiting for manufacturers to bring to market products fit for the 21st Century. If Segwag or Gm or both together read these replies, then I would STRONGLY urge you to make headway. If not the present motorised wheelchair, then perhaps you have something better? The point is this is a market, which is not related to the burst economy. Indeed, this is a market which is constant, and therefore, a market worth putting your money where your [good ideas] are evident.
If, I may be quite direct, those contributors who have their minds on anything other than motorised wheelchairs and improving same, THEY viz. the FOOD FREEKS etc should go directly to their local food outlet. Better still, bore yourselfs, but please have the HUMAN decency of NOT boring People with your frankly boring and irrelevant contributions relating to FOOD.
As a Lawyer, I must advise any "punks", I will respond appropriately to any abuse, which will include sending a copy of any inappropriate replies to the Authorities for Prosecution.
You should note.
