Mar 25 2009OnLive: The Future Of Video Gaming?

OnLive promises to change the way we game by requiring no heavy-duty consoles or gaming rigs in the future, just a simple box and high-speed internet connection.
The brainchild of Rearden Studios founder Steve Perlman, formerly of Atari, Apple, WebTV and more, and Mike McGarvey, formerly of Eidos, the technology looks to revolutionize the way computer games are brought home. Instead of spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on the latest video game hardware that will make games like Crysis playable at nearly maxed settings, let OnLive's servers handle the processing. All that's required is a low cost "micro console" or a low end PC and a broadband internet connection.
Using patented video compression in tandem with algorithms that compensate for lag, jitter and packet loss, OnLive delivers video at up to 720p resolution at frame rates up to 60 frames per second. Of course, the quality of the video feed relies on your connection.
Well not bad. I'm really curious to see how this plays out. And by curious I mean bi-curious. NOW WHICH ONE OF YOU HANDSOME DEVILS WANTS A KISSIE?! Haha, ignore that, it's just a cold sore.

Thanks to Julian, Ryan and Miguel, who don't need consoles because they game in their heads. They're freaking crazy people.

TINA TURNER
Well the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You dont look at their faces
And you dont ask their names
You dont think of them as human
You dont think of them at all
You keep your mind on the money
Keeping your eyes on the wall
Chorus
I'm YOUR PRIVATE DANCER
A DANCER FOR MONEY
ILL DO WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO
I'm YOUR PRIVATE DANCER
A DANCER FOR MONEY
ANY OLD MUSIC WILL DO
I wanna make a million dollars
I wanna live out by the sea
Have a husband and some children
Yeah I guess I want a family
All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You dont look at their faces
And you dont ask their names
Repeat chorus twice
Deutschmarks or dollars
American express will nicely thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me do you wanna see me do the shimmy again
Repeat chorus

Good God! What's gonna happen to the physical stuff???
seriously, if you buy all theses games, and the system gets destroyed, you buy a new system... and what? NO GAMES!!
5. SlapAhoe. - March 25, 2009 1:31 PM
this is a big hype up to build momentum for an April Fools joke. you'll see. i heard about this a while ago, and it's fake. not photoshopped though.
6. Ryan - March 25, 2009 1:33 PM
Yeah... Id call this a fail.
7. Rossco - March 25, 2009 1:37 PM
I have a friend who works for Game Informer, and yes this is real. But I don't see it replacing PC gaming, at least completely. Why? Because you still won't be able to mod games that are just streaming to you. That's a big reason why my 360 gets mostly neglected over PC games. Well, that and I can just get PC games off torrent sites, and 360 games are $59.99 new... I mean, what?
8. Pat - March 25, 2009 1:43 PM
It would certainly make sense, considering that other entertainment options (movies, TV) are all headed toward digital delivery.
9. SlapAhoe. - March 25, 2009 1:44 PM
OK, so after doing some research, i think this IS real. sorry. i still wanna slap a hoe.
10. dadoren - March 25, 2009 1:46 PM
What an "Explosive" System!!!Shut your mouths you suck asses you wish you came up with it first.....Wait wrong post.
11. baby face - March 25, 2009 1:47 PM
so basically this thing is an internet router and a dvd player in one? and it gives you the ability to plug in your computer and up to seven multilingual high resolution screens? that is ridiculous. probably one of the worst ideas i have ever heard of in my entire life. i'll take three.
12. Gordon "Fücking" Shumway - March 25, 2009 1:49 PM
@25 - Holy f*ck you're right. You're smart.
And he's not even hiding the fact that he stole it from foundit, who probably stole it from stumbleupon .... What's worse, he stole your comment from you, Vicko. He's stealing from everybody. F * CK
PEOPLE!!! we have to stop stealing things
13. Matt - March 25, 2009 1:57 PM
I don't know if it's real or not, but it sounds good. Of course, seeing as how I live next to damn canada where I can't get a great connection, it looks like the 4,000 bucks I spent on a tv are going to go to waste and I am going to be playing in 480i again. Suck.
14. Angel Mass - March 25, 2009 1:59 PM
I guess youll need all your bandwidth resources only to play the games then
15. che-che - March 25, 2009 2:01 PM
pretty innovative. can't wait! wheres my daisy, i love you!
16. James - March 25, 2009 2:02 PM
I've heard some very skeptical statements about whether it's physically possible to deliver a quality service with our current telecom infrastructure, and I agree with them.
If this rolls out now, it doesn't seem like it could be anything but horribly laggy.
17. @12 - March 25, 2009 2:08 PM

FAIL??
18. naas - March 25, 2009 2:11 PM
I think I'm too attached to my ps3 to care about new online gaming, but it's a nice looking console
19. $.02 and a pocket full of FAH-Q - March 25, 2009 2:22 PM
They've eliminated the need for consoles by inventing... a console?
20. Duran - March 25, 2009 2:33 PM
lets just leave this one as a failure like that phantom thing from a while back.
21. beanbag - March 25, 2009 2:33 PM
This are for making intronets game? That are new iphone?
22. STFUP - March 25, 2009 2:43 PM
The concept is sound, but today's ISP's couldn't handle the necessary bandwidth requirements (and lag could be a constant issue).
23. Gordon "Fücking" Shumway - March 25, 2009 2:54 PM
@35 -
you stole my comment!!! t( '.' t )
24. Graf Zeppelin - March 25, 2009 3:06 PM

27. Galtacticus - March 25, 2009 3:15 PM
Looks pretty good to me! I'm predicting lots of whiny kids weeks before their birthday!
28. Pew³ - March 25, 2009 3:17 PM
Game companies just want you to rent games. They make more money that way.
The problem is, you loose your value of ownership. They have been trying to do this on many levels for a long time now.
29. Pew³ - March 25, 2009 3:19 PM
Your killen me Alf!
30. Gordon "Fücking" Shumway - March 25, 2009 3:24 PM
@29
You think I'm killing YOU? You should see what I did to Brian's orthodontist!
31. Pew³ - March 25, 2009 3:29 PM
Not killing, death and stuff....
killen.....youre killen me Smalls!
32. Gordon "Fücking" Shumway - March 25, 2009 3:35 PM
@31
Then I retract my previous comment about the orthodontist. Instead, think of pretty girls with pretty titties. Any who, I'm hungry and that tabby has been teasing me all afternoon. Pardon me while I step out for a bite.
33. $.02 and a pocket full of FAH-Q - March 25, 2009 3:37 PM
I am NOT a tabby. Nor am I a cat - neverming that purring meow. Stop chewing on my tail meow.
34. thechevron - March 25, 2009 3:54 PM
This will last about as long as it takes MS Sony or Nintendo to write a cheque, buy it out and scrap the whole thing.
35. Lizzard - March 25, 2009 4:08 PM
@23 sorry =(
36. Shawn - March 25, 2009 4:43 PM

38. suckmycomment - March 25, 2009 6:56 PM
wont streaming games eat my downloads like crazy?
39. ech0z - March 25, 2009 7:03 PM
whoa this is cool, but i bet the expensive "micro console" is still gonna cost a boatload
40. Watch - March 25, 2009 9:12 PM
Finally, no more having to buy new video cards, CPUs or systems because the latest game requires a fcuking astronomical load of expensive hardware! The ISPs better fcuking provide the bandwidth because we are paying customers!!! The price is worth it if it means never havbing to buy another system or machine to keep up with the latest game system requiremnts!

42. Miguel Gonzalez - March 26, 2009 8:58 AM
Awesome i am one of 3 people who play games in their heads!!!!
43. catch22 - March 26, 2009 9:30 AM
the poor saps that buy this will be undoubtedly those that are loyal to things like the iphone/ipod. they will be at the mercy of the company suffering from rapant cases of having your game removed from "the list" while your only half way through playing the 40ish hour rpg... or the constant "service temporarily unavailable due to maintainence" the lack of having a solid copy of a game and not relying on anytihng but a power supply will be the downfall. the best things about the current gen is that they work without the internet and such.. just have disk in hand and its good... unless you own an xbox then its red rings of death and harddrive death all over the place
44. dubba - March 26, 2009 9:35 AM
cant there just be a online service that allows this from a regular computer eliminating the rest of the junk
45. v - March 27, 2009 2:35 AM
The retailers will never go for this. So why even try?
46. bbb - March 27, 2009 7:44 AM
If scientists are making supercomputers out of PS3's because it's cheaper, how are these people going to crunch as much video as the 100,000,000 consoles out there (even if half of those are just Wii's)? Nor am I optimistic that my 100ms ping is going to improve when its 600+ kbps instead of 64 bytes.
47. Alex - April 2, 2009 2:05 AM
Amazing what technology can do these days. Can't wait to play Crysis on a crappy laptop haha.
-Alex, OnLive forum http://www.onlive1.com
48. Quakkabyte - April 30, 2009 2:05 PM
Just to add to this .... OnLive has probably spent millions on marketing to support a fantasy. Check out the numerous "fanboy" sites that keep popping up around it. Alex (above) is probably a paid marketing douche. Check the domain owners; easy to track down.
Keep in mind that the people behind this are NOT gamers; they're businessmen and scientists who are trying to sell you something that gamers, in reality, just won't buy. With PS3, XBOX360, Wii, and PCs, there is no reason for this product other than for bored hotel room guests who (for some reason) may want to play Crysis on their TV. If you do your research, you'll realize. Even the makers of Crysis don't really believe that the product will do what it says ...
All's fair in love and capitalism, but my money's on another epic "phantom" fail.
Oh, and Alex ... have fun "watching" yourself play a lagged out version of Crysis remotely. LOL.
49. Strategy games - October 5, 2009 3:32 PM
I just watched the video on their site and it does look pretty good. I don't know if it's the one who will change gaming "forever" but high (high!) speed internet will have a great impact on games for sure. To download a full game in minutes, or rent a monthly pass to an online game library, i guess many will see it as an easier way to play, even if it's always great to own the box and the disks.
