Feb 19 2009Ooh, Monster-y: 'Frankenstein Steampunk' PC

frank 1.jpg

This is a steampunk computer affectionately known by its creater Dana Mattocks as 'Frankenstein Steampunk'. Personally, I would have named it Frankensteam or Steamenstein, but that's just me, and I'm awesome as hell. Except way cooler. HIYO!

The first thing you notice about this mod is its size--it's 8 feet tall, and weighs over 400 pounds. The project apparently took a year to complete, and it shows. Not opportunity for modification is pass up, with everything from the power button (a discreet brass valve) to the air intake (an old church floor vent) gets a neo-Victorian overhaul.

Good looking, Dana. Say, while you're on the classic literature kick, how about a Dracula model? It could look like a casket or something. Can you tell the creative juices are flowing this morning? They are, my shirt is soaked. Oh, false alarm -- I'm just dribbling milk. This cereal is being tricky.

Hit the jump for some worthwhile closeups of the craftsmanship.

FIRST?!?

This is the first time i've seen anything remotely as awesome as my own ass. Good work

Thats uber awesome btw!

Steampunky goodness

THAT is something I definitely could use. I'd build giant steampunk arms and claws on it, then hack into it & program it to KILL EVERY FIRSTARD that touches a keyboard - then send it to GW overnight delivery.

Looks like the pressure is a little high on that left gauge....

40lbs of steam? Clearly it should be a maximum of 34lbs for that type harddrive...

I like the "Dr Herbert West" re-agent fluid coursing throught the hoses on the last pic

@5 thanx for visiting the blog by the way

man I dunno,,, I mean I waste lots of time on here and stuff,,, but wow this dude really knows how to waste time... I mean here is my custom built pc:

not for reals yo

Shits weak!

@7 I didn't bookmark it, can you link it again?

I have no issue communicating without the use of profanity. Quite frankly, the english language offers much more colorful adjectives. The point being made is simply that in this country, where this blog is hosted, we have freedom of speech. The same freedom of speech that would protect this blogger (GW) in court. I find it rather disingenuous of him to post NSFW content and genitalia jokes, then censor our comments about them.

If you think your parents have problems turning your computer on now... Hours of family fun watching them try to figure this thing out. Also, this may be a great way to prevent drunken chatting... If you can't turn it on, you won't have to worry about who you sent nudie pics to the night before...

Nice, but can it play Duck Hunter at full res?

pew pew pew!

@7 did you draw all of those?

I don't understand how that works. The barometer is showing a passing cold front, but the manometer is much too low for that to be the case. It just doesn't make any sense. It's almost as if someone put a bunch of random junk on a box without any of it really doing anything.

I want a cyberpunk PC!

Where's the Flux Capacitor?

make one that can hack this site and erase the NBD article that caused all of the stupid Daisy FAKE!!! NBD comments and the comments themselves.

This is actually pretty ghey! why waste all that space with this piece of dooky? it's too big..... and the little light show! UBER FAGGOTRY!

Floppy disk drive, now that is Victorian. I guess teh 3.5 diskette were not floppy, but I will defer to GW for the stiffy jokes.

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie NEver Back Down where Max was playing golf and made believe his arm was broken so someone bettr could take over for him.

@13 yes an yes

Blatantly built by psychic midgets. And otters.

Dogg that's physics it's simple. You should see my death star casemod. The disktray is shaped like the Millennium Falcon in a tractor-beam. MONEY

I'd actually be impressed if it was really steam-powered. Right now it just looks like a big wooden file cabinet with a bunch of old crap bolted to it. Points for style, but it's not really doing much for me...

you really couldnt think of Punkenstein? or Punkensteam for that matter?

@7 -Are you seriously trying to insult someone for not frequenting this website?!

That's completely fail. I hate when these morons do this "fake" steampunk crap, and just make applique out of it. The plumbing and tank at the top could have been used for a really cool liquid cooling system that, with the copper tubing, would have kept it pretty chilly. The gauges could actually measure temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure for the system its self; and temperature, pressure and flow rate for said liquid cooling system. The clockwork could have been made to function when the water passed through the system or as an add-on to the pump mechanism just to spin as accessory. It would be really cool to have the gears spin in the water flow and backlit with one of those faux flickering-flame light bulbs.

I can't believe the spaz didn't even attempt to disguise the drives, which is usually one of the first steps with case-mods. How hard would it have been to use a pressure-pump and hydraulic system that, when you turn a valve, would put pressure on a switch inside the plumbing and turn the system on? A coil of copper tubing will cool better than an aluminum radiator, and would look a hell of a lot cooler. If you used sufficient coolant flow, the noise would even cover up the sound from the hard-drives and disguise any "non-vintage" sounds the real electronics would make.

It's just disappointing and lame when people do stuff like this. He might as well have just stuck a bunch of Hello Kitty stickers all over a store-bought case for as "modded" as this is. He made a cabinet with some not even vintage looking plumbing all over it. I don't think this is even worthy of being on Geekology. This guy should start from scratch and get an imagination, or make friends with someone who has one. I can't believe how incredibly lazy this thing is, and it's just aggravating that someone would be so stupid and lazy and expect praise for it. Life is not the Special-Ed classes the "builder" is used to, and nobody gives gold stars for actually NOT crapping your pants during nap time.

In closing, try to really make stuff functional and justify its inclusion, instead of just hot-gluing a bunch of scrap to some crappy pine boards. Try looking for some distressed oak from a table at a junk sale or something, make it look like it's really what you're trying to make it look like. Hell, you could even take those LCD mods people have that show clock-speed and percent of RAM used a step further, and instead of an LCD you could use a flip-display like in old alarm clocks. The guy who built this is a moron and it's incredibly pathetic that he would even admit it took him a year to do what a toddler could do in a couple hours in arts-and-crafts time in daycare.

I have joined the site "C e l e b m i n g l e. C 0 M" someone motioned here, though there are really many certified rich guy and beauties, but I feel disappeared because a girl asked me about my annual income,...maybe she is a gold digger?

wow its a masterpiece!

i am a graphic artist. this is not done in photoshop. if your going to talk about something and you want to look smart... choose another topic.

It is ingenious. Congratulations!!!!

one would think that as long as its that big, it could at least actually run on steam!

It was a very nice idea! Just wanna say thank you for the information you have shared. Just continue writing this kind of post. I will be your loyal reader. Thanks again.
