Feb 17 2009Escape From City 17: A Half Life Movie
This is part one in a series of shorts entitled Escape From City 17. They're all based on Half Life. You know, the game.
Originally envisioned as a project to test out numerous post production techniques, as well as a spec commercial, it ballooned into a multi-part series. Filmed guerilla style with no money, no time, no crew, no script, the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of $500.
Not freaking bad! And guys: if you're looking for someone to play the handsomely rugged hero in any future episodes, I'm your man. Seriously, I'm great at casting. Gentlemen -- to the couch!
Thanks to Mr M, who tells James Bond what to do.

@2 - you have no idea what you are talking about, so shut the hell up with your drivel. That was pure awesome.

That was pretty rad. Acting wasn't the best in the world, but... When will movie studios realize that if you throw the audience into a hostile alien environment, but one that still has plenty of realism to keep you attached to it, you're halfway there?

Pretty sweet, cgi pssssshhhhh whats that?

Dude, screw you guys #2&3. This was so awesome. Well-done!! Who cares if the acting isn't great! Sorry Brad Pitt couldn't make it this time. If you liked the games, you'll appreciate this effort.

Friggin sweet! I don't give a crap wtf people say about cgi I could enjoy hours upon stoney hours of watching & gaming that.

Sorry, but let's say this film looked no worse than big budget heavy cgi, and they perfectly captured the sense of oppressive pursuit, i just giveyou these facts
This=500 dollars
transformers=150,000,000
So this clip was 5 minutes long and transformers was 144 minutes long
so full length, this film would cost 14,400
Now what about the actors you say, well when i watched Transformers i didn't see any actors.

Amen, #9.
Not to mention that the cinematography and cgi (really even the acting) were LIGHT YEARS beyond Sci-Fi Original movies. "Raptor Planet", anyone?
This was EPIC, can't wait to see the next parts.

Very impressive for a budget of only $500. They did a good job of building suspense despite dropping you right into the mix. I want to see more!

yep they did a good job for only 500 bucks :) Also the graphics on the computer is more than impressive.

I have no issue communicating without the use of profanity. Quite frankly, the english language offers much more colorful adjectives. The point being made is simply that in this country, where this blog is hosted, we have freedom of speech. The same freedom of speech that would protect this blogger (GW) in court. I find it rather disingenuous of him to post NSFW content and genitalia jokes, then censor our comments about them.
I would have something relevant to say if they didn't block vids at my work. censored everywhere *hangs head* *sniffle*.

"This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction."
Seriously, mad props to those guys. I've always been wary of the day when someone (or two someones) might attempt to capture the greatness of the Half-Life universe on film, but this is a great sigh of relief - and on a budget, too! I hope to see much, much more of the same.

LOL LET'S ALL QUOTE THE LYRICS FROM THE PORTAL SONG LOL THE CAKE IS A LIE OH GOD I'M SUCH A CRETIN
Anyway, as far as Half-Life related youtube videos go, you could do a lot worse than to watch Full Life Consequences. I hope that the kid that wrote the original fanfiction feels a burning shame every time he steps outside. They did a masterful job of mocking him.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like the scene in the movie NEver BAck Down where MAx had to negotiate with aliens, and he shot the leader and all the aliens dropped their guns.

this is like Children of Men meets alien movies. i love it. i'd like to see a real film in this sort of style.
and i think the cg is freakin impressive considering the budget.
20. Extraabsorbant - February 17, 2009 9:55 PM
This is great, i like how they used the graphics from the game.

Holy crap these guys are awesome. That was better than about 99% of the B sci-fi movies out there. Granted they had game footage they could use, it's still amazing that they did it with $500 or less.
I hope someone gives these guys a job so that they can start making movies (hopefully a Half-Life movie but I doubt it). I can only imagine what they could do with some real cash.

This is going to be great. $500 budget? This is killer! Makes me want to play the game.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, But I'm more impressed with these guys then I am with all the Star Wars films combined. I mean seriously... I know the camera was pretty expensive, a lot of filmers in action sports have them. (what is it around 2 or 3 grand?)
but for everything else.. 400 dollars? I have high expectations for all indie film makers after watching this. I won't accept anything less then the best.
28. BBR - May 26, 2009 2:42 PM
Low budget, decent results.
Makes you wish some bigshot hollywood did a similar thing for a proper 10mil budget.
But, also shows you can get great results even with a low budget,, it's all in how you make the movie, not how expensive the stars are that you hire.

I love this. When can we see the whole thing edited together? Possibly on a DVD with commentary and behind the scene stuff. Really well done.
