Feb 9 2009Desecrate My Childhood: He-Man Re-Imagined
Growing up, I thought He-Man was the perfect guy. He was strong, smart, sexy, and hung around a ragtag group of dudes all day. Does it get any better?* So why artists Alex Leighton and Marko Djurdjevic felt it necessary to re-imagine the hunk is beyond me. Alex sells his very lighthearted, cartooon-y acrylic originals for $45 (examples after the jump), while Marko, well, Marko is obviously depressed. That's his He-Man there.
Man-At-Arms: He-Man -- Skeletor approaches, we must attack!
He-Man: He-who? I need a clean needle.

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like the scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max had his brother in a headlock, and his brother complained he was bruising his neck meat.

you know, of all the old 80's cartoon series out there, He-Man WOULD be the one that needs an updated look but... this seems to take a step back. Fisto, Whiplash, Beast-Man, and Tri-Klops actually look pretty awesome but the characters that really make it matter just look... wrong! He-Man looks like he's on his way to a local Hot Topic and Skeletor... I really don't have a funny pun for him. The Skeletor design is just wrong, and by "wrong" I mean "incorrect" & "very disturbing". Go back to the drawing board. He-Man is supposed to be large and muscle-bound. If you can't make him look any less gay, then don't make him look more so. Skeletor... IS AN EVIL SCARY SKELETON! How do you get this one wrong?! If you can't make him any scarier... DON'T MAKE HIM GAY!
Just the skeletor pic alone makes me want to watch the "Masters of the Universe" movie and enjoy it.

I have no issue communicating without the use of profanity. Quite frankly, the english language offers much more colorful adjectives. The point being made is simply that in this country, where this blog is hosted, we have freedom of speech. The same freedom of speech that would protect this blogger (GW) in court. Albeit a little too dark for some fans to understand, I think Marko's work represents a more "realistic" He-Man. He's tired, battered, and torn. The rock-star look was clearly inspired by Iggy Pop and I think it's a fresh breath of originality that the franchise could use.
These concepts were actually done in quite a few years ago before talks of another movie even started. Marko did the work for a Thunderdome contest on conceptart.org and posted them to inspire other artists.

Marko actually did a really cool concept of Evil-lynn and had an amazing back story behind her where Skeletor raped, dis-embowled her, and then brought her back to life. It was dark but but really made people think.

Unfotunately this version looks like he is looking for his next fix from a pimp called grey skull, I don't like it, some of the other characters are excellent (Buzz Off, Merman, Triklops), but not this He-man
