The 56" Philips Cinema Widescreen LCD is a 21:9 television hitting the streets of selected countries next month. If you want one you can pay an arm and a kidney and watch movies in the proper 21:9 aspect ratio without black barring it. If you don't want one, forget you ever read this and save that precious brain-space for something useful. Like a tv theme song! Which reminds me -- "thank you for being a friend..." If you are thinking about "Cinemascope" the proportions are 1:2,35 (or on digital cinema 1:2,39) which would make 21.15:9 or in this case, digital 21.51:9.

Widescreen movies are 2.35:1 which is closest to 40:17 in some video conversion software, but I guess if everyone's used to 16:9 then it makes sense they'd ignore that. Who cares about black bars??
