Jan 31 2009Google Streets: Oh My God, He's Got A Gun!

The Google Street View team is at it once again, this time capturing a gun toting nutjob in Rapid City, South Dakota. And by gun toting nutjob I obviously mean freedom fighter. Dad?

lolz fraser

Everything is beter than a gun toting hamas terrorist jewhating nazi.
This ain't that bad then.

If I saw the Google Street View Team I'd point a semiauto at them! The nosy bastards...

4th?

WOLVERIIIIIIIINES

aaaaaah the smell of napalm in the morning...

I am sorely disappointed, It is Rapid City, South Dakota not Grand Rapids, what has happened to responsible journalism.

WTF kind of gun is that? Looks like a ginormous for-grip on that baby. Unless I'm seeing it wrong. He's obviously modded a hunting rifle into a 200 round semi-auto "last stand" machine.

asdf-

That's not a foregrip. That's just his hand. While its not a good picture, looks a lot like a Remington 7600.

they should have paintball guns on the cameras so they can shoot down bad guys... and to know where they've been. "hay, havent we already passed this guy?" *shoes hit window*

speaking of shoes, the statue of the shoe got taken down :(

"governmental bias" my ass, it has a right to stay up

i cant send the info in :( WHY??? Geekologie writer!! you'd better see this here cuz I can't send it in formaly

ooooo
wow that is not a good sign

Lets just hope he is headed for the white house and then the Capitol.

@b - lets hope hes headed for your house. Obama is amazing!! Go OBAMA!!!!

maybe the guy had come back from the gunsmith from having it repaired.

What am I doing here on the weekend? I use this site purely for work distraction....

seventeenth!!!!!!

that picture is right outside a place called First Stop Gun Shop in downtown Rapid City. They have some sweet guns there

@14 How long do you think it'll be before he signs an executive order to ban semiautos? If only I had money so I could stock up now...

This is bullshit.

So it's a guy walking around carrying a gun.

Guns are LEGAL. This isn't a big deal. I walk around with my rifle all the time.

This country is going to SHIT! And Obama is steering us there...

How dumb ARE you people?

Go to google maps. There's a gun shop at the corner where he is.

Idiots.

"OMG HE'S GOT A GUN, WHAT A NUTJOB!!"

@20: You're an idiot.

Mkay, it's a gun... How is this post-worthy?

20- You are an idiot. That would require Obama knowing HOW to steer the ship, he's still figuring it out- at least give him a chance to do something. We are doing this crap to ourselves.

@all those who oppose Obama's decisions. sure it may suck for you, but not the many people whose lives wont be taken by gunman. Plus, the laws may only be passed to a certain degree, whose to say you cant still rent guns where guns are used. Or, maybe you will have something on the gun limiting its use that can be taken off where guns are necisary. I may not be 100% supportive of everything the govt does but what it does do is attempt to make life safer. and the people who wont die to a gun sold because limitations are too low will live on.

@24 Speaking hypothetically, if you were a murderer or other violent criminal, would you care what laws were in place to keep you from procuring a gun? Or would you simply buy one illegally? Gun control will not lower crime rates.

I would also like to refer you to Amendment 2 of the Constitution...

Amendment 2 states we are allowed to own a pair of bear arms to hang on our mantle or use to scare little children during halloween....or when bored.

@25 Countries like Singapore has outlawed guns and yes, crime rates are lowered. Sure there's other factors at play, but seriously, banning guns does work. You seem ignorant to me.

The problem with gun control laws is that they only affect those who obey the law. It worked in places like Singapore because they were never afforded that Constitutional freedom in the first place. It'd be political suicide for Obama, or anyone for that matter, to even imply they were going to take away or even "modify" our rights. In fact I'm completely shocked that there wasn't an immediate call for impeachment when Bush said "The Constitution is just a piece of paper."

@ 27... Singapore also puts people in possession of soft drugs in prison for life, or executes them. Nice analogy. Countries such as that tend to have considerably less crime in general of that nature largely due to the culture and society. Figure in the homogenization of the culture, relatively speaking, as well. You don't have the MS13 and Latin Kings fighting it out in Singapore.

@ 24... You're much more likely to be killed by a car than a gun. And the risk factors inherent in a shooting death are very easy to mitigate- most people shot to death are not the random people subject to, say, a drunk driver, cancer, heart disease, or any of the other far more likely killers. They tend to be criminals, or tied up in less than savory dealings. Open a newspaper. People who get shot will more often than not be less than squeaky clean. Which is precisely why someone else feels the need to shoot them, apparently. Then again, they could be stabbed, or blown up, or killed in a number of other fashions. Also, your typing is atrocious and I suggest you L2mavisbeacon.

That said, I do have a good deal of experience in law, guns, and geekologizing. I suppose its easy to make idiotic statements like that when you have no basis in the reality of the matter.

@27 Please don't call me ignorant. That is very insulting to me. And regarding this particular issue, I did quite a bit of research for a report I wrote about this topic a few years ago. I know that there will be individual cases that can be cited to support either side. I just tend to agree more with the logic that:
1. Criminals will still have access to guns no matter what restrictions are in place. I don't think anybody can argue this.
2. An armed population can defend itself from would-be attackers. I do understand that many people don't carry guns even though they are allowed to, but there will still be those occasional victims that do carry. I don't have my report with me so I don't remember the number, but a significant amount of the time when a criminal attacked an armed citizen, the mere sight of the victim's gun would make the criminal run away.

Ok, some of the people here seemed to have missed the point of the 2nd amendment. It was a 2pronged ideology. #1 was to have citizens help protect against invasion.#2 was to help keep government in check. Gun control laws are simply a step closer to totalitarianism. C'mon people...

@ 31
Exactly! The Govn't should be afraid of its people, not the people afraid of the Govn't.
We wouldn't have so many politicians who owe taxes, mean while sitting pretty at their new desks, if we could throw them in prison... Al Capone is so pissed right now, lol.

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Cubans and Mexicans invade America, and explain they are only taking the Jobs Americans don't want to do theselves. Oh wait, no, they take over and round up all thegun owners and troublemakers and put them in a detention camp. But Max and some friends escape and wage gorilla war from the mountains.

Haha, I laughed a lot when I read that Daisy said "gorilla war."

Sweet Top 35, Soon number 1 will be MiNe... Pew Pew watch ouy Daisy

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the website Geekologie where Daisy wouldnt stop making lame never back down jokes and caused the admins to remove the comments section so that she couldnt make annoying spam comments again!!!!!

@30 Sorry about that. You did come off as awfully smug in your first post. But seriously, is America really steeped in such a culture of violence that you insist on such claims? Also, @29 there are secret societies and gangs still, and the occasional fight followed by a fatal stabbing, but yeah, it is awfully strict. You can get fined for chewing gum. But wouldn't you rather live in a relatively safer community and surrender a few privileges?

37 -NO. I would not give up my freedom to "feel safe". Safety is an illusion, even in relatively calm societies, violence occurs.
Side Note kiddo - I'm fairly certain it was you complaining about the language here, and I would like to congratulate you on effectively censoring the rest of us because of your sheep-like delicate sensibilities. Good luck in you beige world with your "safe" society. ASSHAT.

I don't support violence, I support our right to possess firearms. And tell me you did not just say "privileges!"

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

@37> if someone wants to do you harm they will find a way.

"Stabbings are the most common form of murder in Britain, where firearms — except certain shotguns and sporting rifles — are outlawed. Most police officers in Britain do not carry firearms.

Of the 839 homicides in England and Wales in the 12 months ending Nov. 28 — the most recent period for which Home Office figures are available — 29% involved sharp instruments including knives, blades and swords. Firearms account for just 9% of murders in Britain. The murder rate in Britain is 15 per million people."

Even with guns outlawed there are still shooting deaths and murders. They even instituted a "turn your knife" in day from what I'm reading from the above cited article.

It doesn't make you any safer, just gives you the illusion of safety. Even with the US's higher murder rate of 55 per million people your chances of being struck by lightning are probably better.

He's carrying a hunting rifle with a scope in the crook of his arm. That other object is not connected to the gun, and it's in his hand (a bag or something, not a fore-grip).

Also, this is AMERICA... the last time I checked guns were legal. So what's the big deal?

For those of you that are against guns, it's pretty clear you have never shot one and are not properly informed on the subject. Take some time to understand what you think you hate, and you might change your mind.

If you support freedom, then you'll support the 2nd Amendment. Without the 2nd Amendment, none of our other freedoms would be possible. Make sure you do what you can for your freedoms and buy a membership in the NRA.

Wal Mart sells big ass 500 boxes of .22 ammo and also 300 size boxes of shotgun shells. Whenever I run out to restock, after the clerk hands me the ammo, I ask, what aisle to they have the anti-depressants on?

WOW, just wow.

I cannot believe there are so many pro 2nd amendment people in this forum.

@eggs. What you mentioned, that giving up of "privileges" for security? That's communist thinking. Problem is, you never have the security they promise even in a communist society. In the US, some people live "out in the county". Let me tell you, police response time there can be an hour or more. An hour? Have any idea what a criminal (or more than one criminal usually) can do to you, your wife, your child in an hour?

My brother is a police officer in NYC with 8 yrs of service. His exact words: "If you're relying on the police for your own personal safety, you're stupid. 98% of the non domestic violence calls we answer are after the perp is long gone. We're just there to secure the scene before the coroner shows up." You aren't even safe in a big city.

No joke. Your personal safety is your own responsibility. Why would you rely on someone else to protect you? You aren't Chuck Norris. Why would you put yourself in a vulnerable situation by not having some way of protecting yourself vs. multiple people intent on doing you harm? That Louisville Slugger ain't gonna cut it.

Crime has gone down here too. Know why? It coincides with the concealed carry law. The criminals have no idea who's carrying and who's not. They're less willing to take a risk now.

@44 etc. I suppose we will just have to live with our individual viewpoints. We simply grew up under different cultures and were socialized differently. I suppose neither of us can change each other's opinions, so I shan't argue. Kinda like debating religion. I know of no one in my acquiantance who was mugged/ subjected to any violent crime or even pickpocketed ever since I immigrated to a country without guns, but my American relatives sing a different tune. So I guess that's the reason for your hostility and strong individual streak. And don't label people communists just like that. Comes off as silly, at best.

@38 No, it wasn't me. But I think it is a change for the better. Shouldn't we be civilized by now? You know, using reasoning instead of expelatives? Or are you still a 5th grader?

Why is the truth silly? Do average citizens in china/russia/cuba own Legal firearms?

Communism is based off of lack of individual freedom vs. security. Not giving people the decision to defend themselves legally and restricting a law abiding citizen is not a free society. Just because you say it's "silly" and blow off something relevant doesn't mean it is.

"I know of no one in my acquaintance ...etc"

So? So what? That makes it OK to restrict everyone (who were obeying laws anyway) on your personal experience? I think not.

You have the right to defend yourself. If you don't exercise that right it's up to you. Why on earth would you want to take that right away from other people? Why does my owning a firearm scare you so much? I have never committed a crime with one. Am I guilty before being proven innocent?

Stricter gun laws only make the people who hate guns happier. I was born and raised in NYC and all the gun violence I have seen were from guns purchased illegally. The city laws state that unless you are a police officer or a security guard you cannot own any firearm, even a shotgun or rifle which are legal in the rest of the state. You can however get a handgun for 400 or an uzi for 1200 if you know the right people. There is no point in creating stricter laws because criminals operate outside the law.

And if you go to google maps, there's a link "explore this area" link...
Thanks but no :)

LOL - a REAL discussion in the comments of a geekologie post? No. Way. And here I thought we were only capable of penis jokes and the same stale old photoshop / never back down "joke".

No matter where you are on the issue, understand there will always be guns in America and there will always be people trying to get rid of them. Both sides are full of genuinely stupid zealots and also good, intelligent people.

There's nothing to get people fired up like a gun debate... But let's try this: I think all gay people should be forced to have abortions to help stop global warming. No matter what, as long as we're fighting amongst ourselves about things that (while they are important) are emotional wedge issues, we're just being manipulated. Take a moderate conservative and tell him you're planning to take his guns away or let gays marry (in his home state, even!), and he'll be spitting venom. Take a rational liberal and tell them you'll take away the right to have an abortion or make their kids say the pledge of allegiance (with the word "God", no less!) and they'll be ready to kill.

And most of the politicians don't give a rat's ass if people are legally allowed to "abort" toddlers with a hammer or if people are marrying stryofoam coolers full of monkey spunk as long as you vote for them. Here we are fighting about the last open deck chair on the titanic... See you at the bottom of the ocean.

-C

I think it should be legal for me to abort my child with my gun. Where does that leave me?

*yawn* this is barely a story.

dude carrys bolt action rifle to car and is seen by google = public outcry.

world gone crazy.

@eggs - I find it amusing that you are attempting to insult my maturity level while pretending to keep a moral high ground. I have no issue communicating without the use of profanity. Quite frankly, the english language offers much more colorful adjectives. The point being made - which you again missed in your attempt to sound informed and elitist - was simply that in this country, where this blog is hosted, we have freedom of speech. The same freedom of speech that would protect this blogger (GW) in court. I find it rather disingenuous of him to post NSFW content and genitalia jokes, then censor our comments about them.

@25.....your a grade a fukkin moron! The "right to bear arms" was written over 200 years ago when they had pop guns and had to stuff muskets that were extremely inaccurate. Not semi-automatic .50 cal sniper riflers and M4's.

Stupid fukker.

@41....your're dumb too. I have a better chance of gettin struck by lighting than murdered? Obviously your delusional since all you gotta do is drive the way someone does like and you can be popped or look at someone the wrong way and get a gat pulled on you. Other dumb ass comment from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

@52....ok intellectual poin-dester. Push your glasses back on your nose and go back to Starbucks with that "snort snort Im smarter than you how dare you insult me x times y equals mc2 b" shit. Dork.

@53, they had rifles that where accurate to 300 yards in the American Revolution...... mostly used by guerrilla groups. The ability to possess weapons capable of taking out government forces is still relevant.

Ok. Yea have a gun for protection, a gun.... not an automatic rifle. If someone comes in my house and tries to hurt me, i wanna take him out. But i don't think 200 round semi-automatic rifles are necessary. Like everyone said though, a psycho will get what ever kind of gun he wants. I agree with Chris Rock, don't outlaw guns, just make the bullets expensive as hell. Someone will think twice about shooting someone with a $5,000 bullet. Lets get to the original point of the post....it would be funny to go to Google maps to look up a street and find this guy walking down it. I think that's the point....it's not something you see everyday.

"I dunno what fairy tale world you live in but in the world i live in....a bitch need a gun."

P.S. -- please tell me that thing in his hand isn't a beer. lol.... That has AMERICA written all over it. I live in the south and can't imagine seeing this.

@53... Am I supposed to feel stupid for being called a moron by somebody who can't spell the words "you're" or "rifles?"

I already live in a state where I can't own an automatic or a suppressor. I don't want the government taking away my right to own a semiautomatic.

55 - Did you're care representative find you yet? They must be worried on that short bus...
The insult you were looking for was "Poindexter". Asshat.

Damnit, bye "you're" I meant "your"...

Damnit, by "you're" I meant "your"...

WHO GAVE THIS GUY A GUN?!

LOL

The Sky Is Falling!!! The Sky Is Falling!!!!

LOL

LOL

Don't get your panties in a bunch. That shot is from 7th & Main where First Stop Gun Shop is located. The guy probably picked up his gun and walked to his car. Unlike parts of the country that are run by metrosexuals, we don't get too excited about people carrying guns down the street.

He really should sling the rifle. Other than that, I see no problem.

eggs @ 37 ....Also, @29 there are secret societies and gangs still, and the occasional fight followed by a fatal stabbing, but yeah, it is awfully strict. You can get fined for chewing gum. But wouldn't you rather live in a relatively safer community and surrender a few privileges?

Not only no but HELL NO. They are not privileges to start with, they are rights that the government is expressly prohibited from tampering with. "shall not be infringed" is a much stronger restriction than "Congress shall make no law".
Willfully ignorant people should have their priviledges to vote and free speech restricted to save us all from their ignorant ideas. There is too small a line between willful ignorance and stupidity.

@53...

Matt, the "Kentucky" or "Pennsylvania" long rifle was a common weapon used by the Americans who founded this country.

It was the "sniper rifle" of its day, and it was........ .50 caliber!

Not that a foreigner like me should be taking part in what is clearly American discourse but do you know WHY the second amendment exists? Because it has nothing to do with the whole Charlton Heston, redneck, NRA, over-my-dead body, it's my right to protect my family thing . . .

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

In other words, following the defeat of the English in the War Of Independence and recognising that at any time it might be necessary to defend the country again from any number of other colonial powers, ranging from France to the Dutch (despite them being allies at the time), and that the maintance of a large scale standing army was impossible after the war, they decided the resistance militias already trained, who had fought for the country, would be allowed to own firearms, for use in the defence of the country should a foreign power ever try to retake the colonies. So in the original spirit of the 2nd Amendment the only time an American citizen (who is not a cop or a soldier) should use a firearm is against someone the government tells him/her to shoot . . .

And that's a highly amusing thought, right there.

Good God, A gun the size of a donut !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHIT!BUGGER!!BLUDDY HELE!

PKM?
