Dec 16 2008What?: Russian Man Trademarks ;-) Emoticon

emoticons.jpg

Apparently the Russian patent office granted a trademark to resident doucheweed Oleg Teterin, a man who now allegedly owns the rights to the ;-) emoticon. WTF!

But critics doubt the trademark's legal basis as the emoticon has been in the public domain for years.

"I want to highlight that this is only directed at corporations, companies that are trying to make a profit without the permission of the trademark holder," Mr Teterin said in comments on the Russian TV channel, NTV.

He also said since other similar emoticons - :-) or ;) or :) - resemble the one he has trademarked, use of those symbols could also fall under his ownership.

Wow, what is the world coming to? And where does this Ruski get off trying to trademark MY emoticons. That's right folks, I invented them all. Just kidding, but I do use 8===D a lot, often followed by 'PEW PEW!'

Russian hopes to cash in on ;-) [bbcnews]

Thanks Richthegringo, and good luck on your quest to patent all punctuation. Also, thanks to Abby, my new legal consultant.

damn commies

oh ya first

;-)

GW, I would like to take this time (that i should be working) to thank you for all of the pews, laughs, and interesting knowledge you have filled my life with since I have found your website at the start of this job. You have really made it so that I do not put my fist into the monitor

8================D

In soviet russia, douche sues YOU

I've just patented the use of the terms "first" "frist" "flurst" "second" "FAKE" "photoshopped" "Daisy" and "pew".

Pay up bitches.

Did I mention the time I was once in Russia? I was on a mission; code name Emoticon. During a farewell speech to the people, someone from the Russian patent office threw his shoes at me. I managed to dodge both of them before my secret angents, Smilie and Winkey could subdue this dark overlord from his attack. True story. I think GW is a spy secretly implanting secrets in his posts. The gubment may have to shut this site down. I hope not, I find all my Star Wars gift ideas from this site.

Dear Geekologie Writer,

You made a mistake here. He didn't get a patent on the ;-) he got a trademark. Patents are for more scientific type discoveries. Trademarks are used to identify a source of where the goods are coming from. It's not so crazy that someone could use ;-) for a trademark. Trademark law has nothing to do with "public domain" (that's copyright law).

All your emoticons are belong to us. ;-)

I also copyrighted and trademarked the above terms... :-P thppppp

I'm covered

Pew pew pew ®

I think <===3 is a better representation than 8===D

i thought www.despair.com owned it? I'm pretty sure they snuck it through the US offices years ago.

Note: I see they own the :-( one. How funny.

@13 only if you have the smallest head in the world...

@15 - your head's bigger than your balls? i'll bet that looks awfully strange.

c===3
perhaps this is a good compromise? not too big, not too small?

REAL!

You can tell because the shadows are PERFECT!

This reminds me of the part of the movie Never Back Down (Porn Version) where Max and Baja wink at each other in a Del Taco and then get busy in the washroom.

8=======D ~~~~~~ O-:

My visits to the comment section here have become less and less frequent over the past year.

The 'fake', 'never back down' comments are the reason why.

I know many people believe this to be a trolling effort and response is only what the troll is looking for, but I beg to differ. I think that someone or some group of people out there will keep that up no matter if it is completely ignored or not.

Some people are just lame enough to do that, I have learned.

The interwebs giveth (free porn) as well as taketh away (my respect for the human race).

@17 yes this will do heh...

@19 i almost got busted surfing this site at work cause i laughed to loudly at this PEW!

WAT

lame

@20...

Good Job at pointing out the "fake" and "never back down" comments... by doing that, you pretty much ensure they will keep it up...

Also, you comment about your lack of respect for the human race, yet you openly admit to surfing the "interwebs" for free porn....

Pot calling the kettle black? I think so...

EPIC FAIL LOSER!

P.S. Here's a good idea, make you visits to the comment section even less frequent...like none!

FAKE!!!!

This is an obvious photoshop jb. you can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max and Baja infiltrate KAOS in a bakery in Russia. Max makes friends with the baddie who is trying to kill them and because of this he is able to save the day and expose The Rock as a double agent.

(.)(.) boobies!!!

@23

lol true ;-)

8=======D ~~~~~~ O-: ({})

Thanks for the shout out! My dreams have finally come true! I've always wanted to be mentioned on Geekologie! Thanks!!!!!

@20 - You'll be missed....NOT

You guys are stupid, #20 was right - those fake, shopped, never back down comments will never stop whether or not someone responds.

This was obviously in response to those on here who make it a point to criticize anyone for acknowledging or criticizing Daisy's stupid comments. Daisy is so much of a loser that he will keep that up till he keels over from the early onset heart disease currently being developed by an escalating Cheetos and no physical activity addiction.

I don't blame #20 for giving up you all and your lack of clever - funny.

I intercept your FAIL comment and toss it swiftly back towards you.

@30 - you should change your name to whistle blower. Then go look at 20's name.

So we can't use ;-) ? Ok just flip it! (-;

ZOMG WHHAAAATT WHHAAAAATT!!!! Thats's so s... GAH! we'll have to pay to use emoticon soon! God DAMN it!

FAKE!!!!

This is a total photoshop job. The shadows are all wrong.

This was taken from a scene in the movie Tender Dracula.
Dracula takes the red headed drunk overdubbed french actress over his knee and spanks her while describing the plot from Frankenstein.

Windows allready trademarked the emoticon XP

poor russia...its got nothing better to do..

damn snow!! >_<

This article is a fake! You can tell because the Ruskie doesn't own the liscense to the font from which ;-) was scribed; furthermore, the characters on the computer keyboard are all part of the public domain.

I must say, this reminds me of the scene from the movie "Ever Give Up" when Jeff tried to patent a blend of peyote mixed with Kool-Aid, but it didn't hold up in court because peyote is an illegal substance that grows naturally on the planet and that fat red picture of Kool-Aid busted into the court room with one kick ass legal firm that OJ used. Daryl later goes on to sell a top selling cookbook including Jeff's recipe for peyote-punch. Then Daryl used the proceeds to go to Las Vegas. I probably don't have to remind you what happens next. Aside from the product placement of the Cochran Law Firm, that was one kick ass romantic comedy with a sci-fi horror twist!

here's PDF of Teterin's wink-face emoticon trademark

Emille is a fake representing the soviet courts.

This reminds me of a scene in "Ever Give Up" when Jeff loses the rights to patenting a peyote punch drink, yet the russian court obliged gave him a patent. Jeff was relieved for awhile, but eventually he realized no one gives a shit about what the Russian Court thinks.

His Russian patent was not honored by American courts, but if he welded the strength of a lightsaber welded with a chainsaw, then he might have gained some sincere respect.

I mean, sincere RESTECPA
