Dec 3 2008Mad Skills: Amazing Digital Art Techniques

This is a gallery of several different exemplary digital painting techniques (sorry, no Star Wars porn here). I posted 10 of my favorites out of the 52, so make sure to check out the full gallery for the others. Some of the stuff is seriously mind boggling. Granted, I personally could have done better in Microsoft Paint, but that's just because I'm the l337 photohaxor. Even with both hands tied behind my back. And ball-gagged. And some leather-clad dude beating the shit out of me with a riding crop. Oh yeah, that's the stuff. I'm gonna....oh....oh....PAINT BUCKET TOOL!
Hit the jump for a bunch more and a link to the gallery.

54 Mind-blowing Digital Paintings [psdtuts]

ZOMGWTFBBQQQFAAAKKKEEE!!!
This is an obvious photoshop job. You can tell it's a fake because the shadows are all damn wrong.
This is a retake from behind the scenes of the hit movie never back down, where Baja paid for Max's art classes and drew him a fish using photoshop. Max didn't care for it too much though.

Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software. Traditional painting is painting with a physical medium as opposed to a more modern style like digital. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly on the computer. All digital painting programs try to mimic the use of physical media through various brushes and paint effects. Included in many programs are brushes that are digitally styled to represent the traditional style like oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, pen and even media such as airbrushing. There are also certain effects unique to each type of digital paint which portraying the realistic effects of say watercolor on a digital 'watercolor' painting.[1] In most digital painting programs, the user can create their own brush style using a combination of texture and shape. This ability is very important in bridging the gap between traditional and digital painting.
Digital painting thrives mostly in production art. It is most widely used in conceptual design for film, television and video games. Digital painting software such as Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop, ArtRage, GIMP, and openCanvas give artists a similar environment to a physical painter: a canvas, painting tools, mixing palettes, and a multitude of color options. There are various types of digital painting, including impressionism, realism, and watercolor. There are both benefits and drawbacks of digital painting. While digital painting allows the artist the ease of working in an organized, mess-free environment, some argue there will always be more control for an artist holding a physical brush in their hand. Some artists believe there is something missing from digital painting, such as the character that is unique to every physically made object. Many artist post blogs and comment on the various differences between digitally created work and traditionally created artwork........Boy, I'm tired!!!!

digital painting is using ur mouse or a special pen that you connect to ur pc/mac via usb to paint directly on the computer. you can use specialist software like corel painter or even photoshop. a lot of pre visualization work and matte paintings for films are nowadays made digitally by the artists.
the images posted above are okay, there are some far better people out there though. check out "expose" books for some of the top notch people.
9. chuck - December 3, 2008 9:27 PM
I've never understood how it's not distractingly unrealistic when someone holds up a "sword" that would be impossible to lift if made of anything except styrofoam. I know it's "fantasy," but come on.
10. chuck - December 3, 2008 9:30 PM
f***in anime
11. Jeebus - December 3, 2008 9:34 PM

16. mecl711 - December 3, 2008 10:17 PM
Daisy should get her facts straight.... "it's a photoshop job!"....... stupid bitch.... =P
17. GRAMMARNAZI - December 3, 2008 10:21 PM
You could have chosen hundreds of possible convincing nouns and you chose ........."muffins". That's like saying, "...as intense as soup".
18. SODAssault - December 3, 2008 10:25 PM
Get that final fantasy shit out of here.
19. Moose Knuckle (the craven closet homo one) - December 3, 2008 10:25 PM
You know, I'm an illustrator. Some of these are good, but those 2 of the living room and the kitchen are totally photoshop filtered photos, and they f***ing suck. If they're not just filtered, then why the f*** would the "artist" make them look like filtered photos? What a f***ing tool.
20. john - December 3, 2008 10:26 PM

@19 - I concur.

25. GRAMMARNAZI - December 3, 2008 10:51 PM
HEY!!!,
Am I just a pervert or is the robot-thingy in the first painting showing us her breasts?
26. buzz_clik - December 3, 2008 10:53 PM
That time that my alphabet soup spelled out instructions on how I should kill everybody in my building? Pretty intense.
Luckily, my neighbour's labrador retriever talked me out of it.
27. buzz_clik - December 3, 2008 10:54 PM
@25 - The fact that you're a pervert has nothing to do with the fact that you're correct.
28. GRAMMARNAZI - December 3, 2008 10:57 PM
"THANK GOD!!!"
29. Peter - December 3, 2008 11:58 PM

They just gotta squeeze in Optimus Prime. Michael Bay into something, I could tell you that.

40. Uncle Eccoli - December 4, 2008 8:55 AM
Art is dead.
41. Daisy (the real one) - December 4, 2008 9:18 AM
FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is exactly like the scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max and Baja needed money to save their gym, and entered a dodgeball tournament.
42. boredom - December 4, 2008 9:22 AM
such animosity between the commenters these days. Oh and muffins can be intense just ask the muffin man he'll tell you. I would argue though that soup isn't really intense, now stew on the other hand can be very intense.
43. GRAMMARNAZI - December 4, 2008 9:22 AM
Art is not dead. It's just resting.
44. c. Sellars - December 4, 2008 9:25 AM
@ Mooseknuckle.
I did a little Internet searching and found the artist for which you had issue.
http://www.greensocksart.com/index.html
It is possible, what you say, but he has the skills, so maybe it is just a style choice for the illustrations.
45. Douchie Mc Bagman - December 4, 2008 9:44 AM
@7 nice cut and paste skills....
you should include the link though.

This place is a f***ing gasoline-soaked time bomb today!
I love when everybody bands together to destroy each other with verbal ammunition. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!
Angry mother f***ers. You are awesome. I feast on your despair!!!!
47. Thumperchica - December 4, 2008 9:49 AM
The one before Optimus Prime is my favorite... dark, intense, and humorous if you cock your head to the side and look again at the cat's expression...
48. Mr Hobbes - December 4, 2008 10:05 AM
@45 yeah, I like how he adds "...Boy, I'm tired!!!!" to the end to try and make people think he typed it all himself off the top of his head.
49. Bernie Kosar - December 4, 2008 10:13 AM
#46 - F*** you, I used to feed on the despair of others, then my mother got a job
50. OJ's Mom - December 4, 2008 10:49 AM
@49 - mmmmmm, tasty.
(no, not your despair, your mom.)
51. Amaranth - December 4, 2008 10:50 AM
@37 the ignorance...
52. Moose Knuckle - December 4, 2008 10:50 AM
Holy crap everyone is lively this morning! I just got to work and you guys are already all up innit. Eastside is it?
53. LSDiesel - December 4, 2008 10:50 AM

See that GRAMMARNAZI? Short and sweet.
54. Sean Connery - December 4, 2008 10:51 AM
@49 "Your mother was a Snow Blower."
55. Moose Knuckle - December 4, 2008 11:00 AM
I kinda like the living room and the kitchen, the altered color schem changes the mood. And I don't think they're photoshop filtered photos... if you look closely some of the shadows are wrong.
56. GRAMMARNAZI - December 4, 2008 11:04 AM
@53
Yea, I said the same thing when I saw your mom on Porn Tube.
57. Pew³ - December 4, 2008 11:10 AM
FAKE!!
These aren't digital paintings at all. The textures are all wrong. These were painted with a real brush and paint.
They remind me of a movie....actually, they don't remind me of a movie either.
Pew pew pew
58. Moose Knuckle (the craven closet homo one) - December 4, 2008 11:15 AM
@55. That's funny. I like you.
59. GRAMMARNAZI - December 4, 2008 11:17 AM
@55
Y'or probably right Mr. Knuckle. Although, shadow imperfections are not exclusive to digital art. With years of experience you can mess & alter shadows with traditional darkroom techniques by overdeveloping or overheating developer in the development process of negatives, or dodging and burning prints.
Not that I would know about that,... or anything.
60. Moose Knuckle - December 4, 2008 11:27 AM
surreal...
61. Jank Hands - December 4, 2008 12:04 PM
SIXTY FIRST,
Muffins are Delicious,
I like upside down boobs,
Digital painting is clearly the work of a sorcerer,
I like upside down boobs.
Any Questions?
Didnt think so.
PWND
62. Mike - December 4, 2008 1:12 PM
"Muffins are f***ing intense"... that's funny like a couch!
63. DrNecropolis - December 4, 2008 5:24 PM
You want intense? Try dipping a corn muffin into tomato bisque, almost as awesome as dipping a grilled cheese in tomato soup, extra points if its a grilled cheese w/bacon
64. buzz_clik - December 4, 2008 5:34 PM
@62 - You're correct like a dinosaur.
65. GRAMMARNAZI - December 4, 2008 5:59 PM
Why a dinosaur?
66. buzz_clik - December 4, 2008 6:19 PM
Because it was the first word that popped into my head, and it makes as much sense as the attributes being designated to muffins and couches.
Actually, strike all that. My answer to your question is: Why NOT a dinosaur? *mysterious look with arched eyebrow*
67. Blopit - December 4, 2008 7:47 PM
i find nothing worng with dinosaurs i had one as my music teacher back in grade 8. and randomness is considered a form of art on some planets...ya but...on some planets its safe to eat doorknobs.
Many things are very disturbing for my perverted mind, observe (pics from top to bottom)
- 2 testicles and 2 rectangular balls
- i still don't understand this pic
- sexy winged bitch cant make up her mind, does she want to burn or freeze the city??!! still id tap that...even though it is just a drawing... :( ...atleast im not tapping the comuter screen like some people.
- dildo lamp
- flying thong
- id tap that in so many places
- i wouldn't mind being that motorcycle as long as the rider is female
- implants
- WTF a lightsaber in medevil times FTW!
- robot sex on water
nice pics though
68. Snow - December 4, 2008 8:20 PM
@54 - she was good too
69. Paul - December 5, 2008 7:35 AM
(I've been an illustrator retoucher for a decade or so at various agencies)
Some of these new techniques are interesting but they are a poor imitation of the real thing. Although they have their place in a clean office environment I guess.
Also some of the above content is rather pointless, as it's 'too' photographic. It's simpler to just snap the real thing and filter it. Some of these styles are merely a rehash of the 80's airbrushing fad.
What I prefer is to create something by hand in various media, then merge them together in photoshop. So the digital final work also contains some of your real life handicraft - a sort of hybrid from old to new school if you like. I also like to have some contrast too, say a technical illustration overlaid with real textures or painting for example.
Great skills though, so it gets a silver star all the same :D
70. Viniger - December 14, 2008 4:18 PM
Am still trying to get a woman balancing a pot perfectly! The question is are the oil paintins or photographs
71. Viniger - December 14, 2008 4:29 PM
I meant painting a woman balancing a pot.Reality and a more beautiful scene l ever .So oil painting or photographs.
72. Ben - February 20, 2009 7:07 PM
This is another example of media overshadowing the message. Some of these pieces are interesting and fresh, but in the end what does it matter what tools were used to create them? I'm not even debating the argument of if digital or real painting is "easier" or "cheating". I'm just saying that a piece of art made in any medium only really matters if the piece is interesting or thought provoking. Musicians have had to deal with this for years in the form of sampling/electronic music vs. electro-acoustic "live" instruments. To me it doesn't matter if the music is made on a PC or on a "real" physical instrument: the music matters, no the tools used to create it.
73. BooTz - February 22, 2009 7:50 PM
haha.. the angle has a BULDGE! *_*
74. Blob - February 23, 2009 4:33 PM
Why are digital paintings so dramatic or depressing? Would it kill them to paint a meadow?
