Nov 19 2008Keep Your Money Secure With A LEGO Safe

This LEGO safe is made out of modular plastic blocks called LEGO bricks. And it has a Mindstorm NXT unit attached to handle its secret combination.
Five double digit codes protect your valuables, and the dial goes both ways, so there's a left and right entry for each number -- hence, over 305 billion possible combinations. Moving the safe will trip motion sensors and set off an alarm, and bars inside strengthen the structure.
Not bad -- as long as you're only locking up old Halloween candy or your little sister. But what if you need to protect something a little more valuable? That's right -- always cover your nuts with a free hand.
Video after the jump.

Thanks to Julian, who swears he has no idea how that stripper got there.

Speaking of Legos, has anyone been to the "The Art of Brick" exhibit? I'll be checking that out in Philly next week.

Daisy is a complete photoshop job. You can tell because the shadows in her dark heart are all wrong.
Okay, I'll purchase one, as long as it plays that cool Herbie Hancock groove whilst I'm operating it. Mmmm, reminds one of Axel F. ~Doot, doot, doot-da-doot, doot, doot,...ahh.

FAKE!!!!
This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its fake because the shadow's are all wrong.
This is like the safe in the movie Never Back Down, when Max was planning a bank heist, and built a scale model of the banks safe to practice on. It was hilarious when he got to the bank, broke in and then realized the safe was empty, and open because it was being cleaned that weekend.

i enjoy that the alarm is the same door chime from the quicky-mart :)

I'm not sure how they get over 305 billion codes.
2 digit numbers = 100 possibilities
2 directions per number = 200 possibilities
5 numbers per combination = 200 ^5
which is 320 billion combinations.
320 billion is larger than 305 billion. So either they suck at math or suck at marketing or both.

Baaahhh...just use your teeth to break into it...just don't let you mom see you do it...

What would keep someone from just disassembling the top of the safe to gain entry?
18. CaptainMorgan - November 19, 2008 2:12 PM
It looks to me like the door is pretty secure. However, it seems like the bottom and top are easily removable. Maybe that's why this person doesn't make real safes?
Also: a hammer, blow torch or drop from the top of the stairs would easily get past that combination. Was this a Lego "Special Olympics" competition?

It wouldn't be very "safe" if it was made out of individual pieces.

If you work in a museum, forget your valuables. This thing alone could go on display! That is, if you own a LEGO museum
