Nov 5 2008The Scorpion: A 40-MPG, 450-Horsepower Hydrogen-Powered Arachnid -- That Stings

Okay it doesn't really sting, it's just a freaking car. Oh wait, maybe it does.
The Scorpion gets its sting from a hydrogen delivery system the company calls H2GO. While cars like the Honda FCX Clarity and Chevrolet Equinox use hydrogen fuel cells to drive electric motors, the Scorpion uses electrolysis to convert water into gaseous hydrogen. The hydrogen is mixed with 91-octane gasoline to improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions of the car's 3.5-liter internal combustion engine.
Ronn Motors is confident that the sexy Scorpion will top 200 mph. The chrome-moly chassis and carbon-fiber body surrounds a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 in a car that weighs just 2,200 pounds. The engine was sourced from Acura -- it's the same mill found in the TL Type S, albeit turbocharged -- and mated to a six-speed gearbox. The car will set you back $150,000, and if 450 ponies isn't enough, another $100 grand will get you a tweaked version with another 150 horsepower.
Oh man. I want one. Badly. Really badly. Just imagine: you're cruising along in your Scorpion, when you decide to swing by the BK drive-thru for a #4 with a Coke. ZOMG I'm making myself moister than a towelette. Just kidding, I don't even know what that means. Or do I?
Hit the jump for a couple more worthwhile pictures.

REAL!!!!
You can tell because the shadows are all right.
Kind of looks like that scene in Always Move Up when Xam and Ajab posted the same goddamn comment 500 f***ing times in a row.

chickaaaa....

The laws of thermodynamics are a harsh mistress. The car may look cool, but the electrolysis/hydrogen angle is so much distilled bullshit that it tells me the entire thing is an investor scam.
Burning hydrogen you obtain through electrolysis is a fast track to overall energy efficiency in single digits. There's just no way around that in the real world. It's like someone saying "I've invented an engine that runs off of happy thoughts".
14. Drnecropolis - November 5, 2008 3:03 PM
Remember the last time we saw a money looking concept car (was it the tesla?) then when they began the production line they made the car look more retarded than algernon. Hhopefully they don't screw it up again
15. dan - November 5, 2008 3:03 PM
i was wondering.. that fuel efficiency.. is it the fuel it burns with the hydrogen? how does it power the electrolysis? i thought the whole point of hydrogen over batteries was because it's a more convient form of tranportable energy, so why carry water and the power to turn it into hydrogen rather than just a hydrogen tank?
pfft. alternative energy.
16. C-Basstian - November 5, 2008 3:04 PM
@13, funny you should say that... i have just invented an engine that runs on happy thoughts and pixie dust...(pixie dust is actually gasoline...and it has not been confirmed that happy thoughts improve fuel economy)
17. fluffyabortion - November 5, 2008 3:16 PM
looks like a car from GTA .... cause they cant use name brand vehicles and they had to make "their" version of a ferrari that had sex with a corvette.. all in all i still love it i wish we had more ferrari corvettes running around
18. Woo Doop - November 5, 2008 3:22 PM
@ 13...explain...your blabbering makes no sense
19. Coffee - November 5, 2008 3:22 PM
I could be wrong, but I think you might spend more energy splitting hydrogen from the h2o than you would get burning the hydrogen.
450 horses is a lot of power though.
20. Thumperchica - November 5, 2008 3:25 PM
Rawr! I want this!

22. Kyle - November 5, 2008 3:57 PM
I'd have sex with that car.
Though maybe it would sting a little, then... (Ah, that's what the Geekologie Writer meant. Figures he'd try that.)
23. DreamFolder - November 5, 2008 4:34 PM
@18
... and you're tuned in to Geekology... why? (That's elitism. Get used to it. Democrats are in control, and they know better than you do. Just ask 'em.)
I was wondering the same question as the one posed @ 13. When you burn Hydrogen, it combines with Oxygen creating water and releasing energy. Electrolysis reverses the process, inputting energy to break the bonds between the Hydrogen and Oxygen to get the liberated elements. The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy always increases (energy is always lost in a closed system - or univerally, depending on where you bound your system) so if you used electrolysis to liberate hydrogen, then reacted hydrogen with oxygen to create electricity, there's a net loss. Enter the gasoline, which contains energy in the chemical bonds, typically exploited by burning in oxygen (oxidizing) to break down the molecules and recombine the elements into lower energy products (carbon di-oxide, carbon monoxide, water and other stuff) releasing energy. I've never seen the equations for burning gas in hydrogen to know what products you get or what energy is released, but that's all this engine is really doing, adding increased concentrations of Hydrogen to the burning of gas. In another article (in a Society of Manufacturing Engineers newsletter) I saw that the thing gets 40 mpg. Whoopee!

FAKE!!!
This is an obvious photoshop job. You can tell its fake, the shadows are all wrong.
It looks a lot like Baja's little brothers toy car from the movie Never Back Down.
25. RIMTUCK - November 5, 2008 4:47 PM
Why can't we make cars like the CRX anymore??? That thing gets 50mpg.

That is one f***ing hot car.
28. Lobo - November 5, 2008 7:53 PM
ok boys and girls im going to reveal a nice little truth to you all and i hope i dont get shot (that shit happens man!)
go on youtube and search stanley myers, no im not talking about the shopping centre i mean the guy that invented and patented a way of converting a normal gasoline powered engine in ANY car and replacing the fuel tank with a water tank, by running an electric current through the water in a specific manner (by the way the voltage needed to do this is very low) you create hydrogen gas which can then be injected straight into the pistons and bam ur car runs, no petrol needed AT ALL and this process actually creates energy, so the output of the hydrogen combustion is actually about 7 times the amount of energy used to create the gas in the first place. ie. cold fusion. also another impressive factor is that it doesnt have to be sparkling spring water incrusted with diamonds or anything like that it can be regular tap water or even better, sea water! coz the salt actually improves the effect of the electrolosis. this technology was actually invented and PATENTED by this guy in like the 70's or sumthin but it never came to surface, why? because he was murdered by the major oil company's because this would mean we would finally have a clean renewable source of energy and i say clean because need i remind you that once the hydrogen rebonds with the oxygen in the air after leaving the exhaust, water is created, and hell if u wanted to improve your cars mileage you cud even screw the exhaust and just funnel it back into the water tank to replenish the tank. he actually documented all his patents and engine mods before he died and you can download the book for free off the net, its actually not very hard to build one of these convertors for urself and im actually in the process of building and modding one for my car rite now so hopefully it all works out
and some of you might be thinkin that im exaggerating about being shot but think about it, if you invented something that but all the oil companies in the world out of business dont you think they would wanna hang onto that money by any means possible?

And people think Daisy is an idiot.......
30. baha - November 5, 2008 8:11 PM
@ 28....
come on son, you really believe that, if this man did it in the 70s, dont you think that someone, somewhere would have found out how to do it as well by now. come on, if it was that easy everyone would be doing it, plus, if the info is available, in a book, why have i lived 18 years and never seen a car that works lie that, in my life...
use your brain man, its HUGHLYYYY unlikely.
31. wall-e - November 5, 2008 8:30 PM
wow they stole my idea, but i wanted to put in a k20a2 boosted into a bloody lotus elise. its a swet looking machine though. they even put back headlights from an s2k i

nice car until youhit a pothole or speedbump....then it looks like ass.
Aerodynamics is nice and all unless you can't get into a parking lot.
33. Madzay - November 6, 2008 3:07 AM
DAMN! that car make me want to have sex with it......
i need to change now........
34. Cyberwulf - November 6, 2008 3:24 AM
@30: you almost made a good argument up until you admitted your age... also, what does "HUGHLYYYY" mean?
Oh, and I want to have sex with that car.
35. CD - November 6, 2008 3:49 AM
What's so special about 40mpg? It's not like we don't already have cars that can do over 40mpg. Granted, most of them don't have 450hp, but then most people who buy cars this powerful don't give a shit about what mpg they get from it.
And the whole water->hydrogen->burn hydrogen+fuel thing sounds like it might not really work out (I'm fairly certain it won't, because you'd have to increase overall efficiency quite a bit to make up for the losses when splitting water into its constituents.)

How to modify your car using water to boost gas mileage.
38. Momboelitist - November 6, 2008 9:57 AM
@15, this is nothing new and there are several companies selling Hydrogen kits right now. In fact, you can easily build your own.
The water is needed for the electrolosis and the current comes from the standard car battery. Once the gas (known as Brown Gas) is produced it is directly injected into the air intake and it mixes with the regular gasoline. All you really have to do is occasionally top off the water reservoir.
Just do a search for "hydrogen kit" and you will see many examples.
39. Broheim - November 7, 2008 12:39 PM
@30 Baha:
My car runs on vegetable oil. You may not have seen a car running on vegetable oil (I haven't got the faintest idea how to see a car run on vegetable oil), but it certainly exists. Hydrogen boosters for cars also certainly do exist, and I can imagine at least a vehicle running on electrolysis alone. Don't assume that something is impossible based solely on empirical evidence that was arrived at only through passive experiences of your small portion of the world.

Also, that Stanley Morgan guy was full of it. Found guilty in Ohio for fraud. His power cell was not revolutionary or special in any way.
