Oct 1 2008Geekologie Reader Makes Dilophosaurus

dinosaur-1.jpg

Loyal Geekologist Dinosaur Josh went and made a Dilophosaurus mount based on the one from Jurassic Park.

Up for auction is a full size replica of the Dilophosaurus from Jurassic Park. This version has it's frill out and mouth open in attack position. It measures 21 inches from the nose to base of the neck. The frill measures 29" in width and 24" high. It is made of high quality poly urethane resin that has been painted and sealed. The dinosaur is mounted to a wooden base. It can be hung on a wall to like a trophy animal with a mount located on the base.

Great job! Bidding starts at $100 and can I borrow it for a night before the auction ends?

Hit the jump for a couple more shots and link to the auction.

Thanks to Dinosaur Josh, who loves dinosaurs as much as I do, just not in the same way.

Pretty cool.
First I think.

Yeah pretty cool. I wonder though what was used to make it.

what sucks is you can't see the wooden base, so people could just think it was a head sticking out of your wall

Thanks. I sculpted it out of clay, then made a soft latex mold that I casted the resin out of.

i guess pretty weak still, now if it was interactive like the talking bass that would be cooler

Very Cool. I could mount it in my lovely room of death.

I'll hunt my own thank you!

Pfft! Any hunter worth his weight has trophies made from his own kill. Now, if I just knew when they were in season and where their game trails are. Of course, it would have to be after the rut as I wouldn't want one spitting some toxic goop on me.

Put a party hat on it and a Hawaiian lei or two.

Or dear antlers, a red nose and pine garland around it's neck....

Does she have a sister or what?

@3 - The fact that it looks like it's coming through the wall makes it cooler you mook!

Beautiful work! That turned out fantastic, the Dilophosaurus was always one of my favorites from the Jurassic Park series and that looks just like it.

It looks gorgeous, but my penis and sharp teeth don't get along too well. How about a full size version? Can I get that with a vaginal or anal cavity at least? Maybe just a wet hole... Gee thanks for wetting my appetite Josh without properly bedding it back down.

@13, According to the Viagra commercial, you should've consulted a physician several hours ago....

'Whetting'.

...playing the role of dinosaur geek: To bad its a copy of the ficticious movie version. The film version of Dilophosaurus has a retractable neck frill (much like a frill-necked lizard), and spits blinding poison to paralyze its prey. There is no evidence to support either the frill or the venom spitting, which were acknowledged by Crichton as creative license changes. In reality Dilophosaurus measured around six meters (20 ft) long and may have weighed half a ton.

The most distinctive characteristic of Dilophosaurus is the pair of rounded crests on its skull, possibly used for display.[2][3] Studies by Robert Gay show that these crests may have been larger in one sex than in the other.[1] The teeth of Dilophosaurus are long, but have a fairly small base and expand basally.[4] Another skull feature was a notch behind the first row of teeth, giving Dilophosaurus an almost crocodile-like appearance. This "notch" existed by virtue of a weak connection between the premaxillary and maxillary bones of the skull. This conformation led to the early hypothesis that Dilophosaurus scavenged off dead carcasses, with the front teeth being too weak to bring down and hold large prey.[5]

i'd hit it.

Thank you for that excel jesus, #16.

The shadows are all wrong showing that this is a bad photoshop job, reminding me of Never Back Down and lactating women who replace cow milk in ice cream. Whoo Whoo!

I can assure you that it is not photoshoped. You can check my myspace to see the original sculpt.

@19, that's just one of the stock comments around here.

@16, Did it hurt?

....when we all beat the shit out of you!

Well at least we know if it spits or swallows.

That's some fantastic work there. Well worth the money, how long did it take to make?

The sculpt took the longest. I worked on it for about a month, a couple days to mold and about 3 weeks from casting to finished result.

I know- throw some red lipstick on it and it's be darn near perfect. Maybe some eyeshadow and rouge. Doll 'er up a bit.
