Aug 29 2008Recreating The Mona Lisa In Less Than A Second....With A 1,100 Barrel Paintball Gun
In a demonstration at Nvidia's NVISION show, the Mythbusters used paintball guns to illustrate the difference between current CPUs and future GPUs. The CPU's stand in was a single paintball gun that repositioned itself after every shot in order create a picture. But the GPU was represented by an 1,100 barrel gun, which paints the entire Mona Lisa in a single blast. You can watch the first one if you want, but I'd just skip to about 1:30, when they unveil the real nasty mother. And don't miss the last 10 seconds of the clip, because they replay the shot in slow motion, and it's freaking crazy. Which, incidentally, so am I. Just don't tell her I called her that, she'd get pissed.
Mythbusters Build a 1100-Barrel Paintball Gun to Paint the Mona Lisa, Instantly [gizmodo]
Thanks to Kezzzs and Dan, who once painted the town red with alcohol in less than 5 hours, but both lost shoes.

I actually had the privilidge of being there for the show. It was nothing less than fantabulous. You could see the clothes on the people in the front rows move when the thing blasted off the canvas. I don't recall the particular myth involving 1100 pointball canons and the mona lisa...

#8: there's no myth. They're simply showing the difference between a current, single-core cpu (obviously not to an accurate time scale), and a future gpu. Now this demonstration isn't completely fair, since a lot of current gpu's can do almost that; but it's exciting to find out that newer gpu's will be better, faster, stronger, harder, and more efficient.

Now that is awesome, that is one nasty mofo of a paintball gun.
11. Learn To Sell Porn - August 29, 2008 5:19 PM
I can paint the mona lisa with my piss... but it takes longer than a minute.
12. DigitalT - August 29, 2008 5:25 PM
Of course I have #4 Foobar, just with your mom as the target. Haha good one though. Bet ya the Jackass dudes would dig that machine though.

yawn... paint a picture of Jennifer Connely in that scene from Requiem(you know the one!) then I might be impressed.
14. Amy - August 29, 2008 5:40 PM
Oh, I know the one.
Wait, no I don't. You mean the scene where she takes that one guy and...to get the....and then she.....oh, okay.
15. Mr Smith - August 29, 2008 7:26 PM
Superb.
16. Nacon - August 29, 2008 7:27 PM
How's that any better or different than the first one?
It's f***ing stupid. Would have been better if one robot with ONE F***ING BARREL could do it faster than the first one did. Come on, what a fake statement for merely advertising.
I hate you guys, MythBusters. You've gone and ruined yourself with advertising crap.
17. SkooshMaster - August 29, 2008 10:28 PM
omg!
18. Beastman AIDS - August 29, 2008 10:42 PM
i don't care what the point was - the slow motion replay was f***in sick and i have a boner.
19. Jess - August 29, 2008 11:56 PM
Did a guy in the audience scream "It's the joker!" when they showed the picture?
20. Amy - August 30, 2008 1:21 AM
You know...I replayed it and I'm still not sure, but whether he did or he didn't, I still sort of want to kick that guy's arse.
21. Antonio - August 30, 2008 10:04 AM
I love those guys. Is that what they do in they're free time?
22. poop - August 30, 2008 10:10 AM

23. Nate - August 30, 2008 4:59 PM
Yup, some dumbass thinks it's the Joker.
24. guate6 - August 31, 2008 12:46 PM
#19: yes, that's what he screamed...I chuckled :p
25. Captain Supremo III - August 31, 2008 3:55 PM
Yeah, in seconds..
Well if you take away the hours that it would take to sort and load the 1100 paintballs..
26. Dnalel - August 31, 2008 7:21 PM
@16: The "Mythbusters" actual job is to make special effects for movies and commercials. They did this long before becoming the mythbusters. Also, why does "Mythbusters" spellcheck to "filibusters"?
27. Super Grover! - September 1, 2008 2:07 PM
I love those guys, best thing on tv..
but that wasnt their show, was it? so what was it??
28. jimo - September 6, 2008 10:46 AM
This is crap ... They should have used at least a Z80 for the first calculation, and what's spectacular with the second one ? Nothing...
29. the curious monkey - September 16, 2008 11:38 PM
That was simply brilliant. bloody brilliant!
30. skamp - September 18, 2008 9:29 AM
#16 nacon: adam and jaime _started_ in advertising. thats how they got the show. they made robots and other "special" things for certain ads and movies.
they own a company that does nothing more than create special effects.
the fact that they are on mythbusters is the only reason you see them out doing the stuff now.. before it was just make it and stay behind the scenes.
