Aug 29 2008Guy Makes Full Size Driveable Landspeeder

Daniel Deutsch went and built himself a 1:1 scale replica of the Star Wars Landspeeder that looks so good, I swear it's been shopped. But allegedly I'm wrong, and the vehicle has "a custom aluminum chassis, fiberglass body, and an electric drive system that hits lightspeed at 25 mph." Freaking sweet! Now you know what they say, "The Vette gets 'em wet, but the Landspeeder, well, the Landspeeder dries 'em out while they make fun of you." Awesome!
Hit the jump for several more pictures of the unbelievably accurate and good looking speeder, including a couple of the build.

it looks like the paint job is photoshopped onto it..... But looks cool none the less..
3. enigma - August 29, 2008 1:59 PM
Let's not forget there were airbrushes before photoshop. ;-)
4. jaime - August 29, 2008 2:01 PM
i WANT that
5. coop - August 29, 2008 2:01 PM
honestly, that's the worst photoshop job ever. I'm amazed this site let's this crap on. and enough with the star wars already. it's the Kevin Federline of movies.
6. DreamFolder - August 29, 2008 2:03 PM
Will his next project be a Mule (Firefly)?
7. Foobar - August 29, 2008 2:06 PM
Is it gay if that gives me a boner?
Is it street legal?
When I think about driving that around in my Boba Fett costume..... lets just say, I better bring lotsa kleenex.
Is it gay if you clean your junk off on an Ewok, after you cream in your pants over a sweet ride like this?
8. Thumperchica - August 29, 2008 2:10 PM
That is cool!
@Foobar- Yes, that's gaygaygaygaygayerthannotlikingbaconandhavingarainbowbrightkeyboardgay!
9. Jar Jar Binks - August 29, 2008 2:12 PM
the first 2 build shots look real enough and appears to be an electric vehicle. The other shots are pretty obviously shopped, but probably a mock up to show the end product.
10. sh3lby - August 29, 2008 2:12 PM
Yeeeaaah.
I hope I'm not the only one thinks that the shadows look awful and aren't even going the right way in the first photo. If that's real, which I'm pretty sure it isn't, then those are the strangest looking photos I've ever seen. And that's including the ones I took of myself wearing only a coffee mug.
11. Thumperchica - August 29, 2008 2:13 PM
BTW- it is me or is the shadow orientation in these pics off?
*cough* Photoshopped... my guess it's still U/C and will stay that way til the owner talks his mom into letting him outside again...
12. sh3lby - August 29, 2008 2:14 PM
and oh, nice shoes in the last photo.
its like he came purple and yellow all over them and called it a day.
13. Alex - August 29, 2008 2:16 PM
meh, who cares? Ever since the XP-38 came out, they just aren't in demand.
14. Nick - August 29, 2008 2:18 PM
why is one of the backstreet boys in this pic?
15. ryan - August 29, 2008 2:21 PM
what the hell is joey the fat one doing in the last pic?
16. Jenny - August 29, 2008 2:22 PM
If they mean it works as in "it just sits there" then I believe them, bcs those are the most god awful attempts at shopping shadows I've ever seen.
17. Right Fury - August 29, 2008 2:23 PM
Joey fucking fatone!
And whats up with those gay ass sneakers?
18. Huh? - August 29, 2008 2:27 PM
You're all idiots. There is no photoshoping going on here. Look at the shadows of everything else in the pictures, they match.
19. Benjamin Tudino - August 29, 2008 2:28 PM
This is are not the 'n sync boy you are looking for......
20. Emma - August 29, 2008 2:31 PM
For serious?
I'll build an effing deathstar if i get to meet a backstreet boy afterwards.
That's freaking awesome. But really, it would only be cool if i got to meet Brian.
That was his name, right? Gees I can't even remember now. He was the one who was the equivalent of Justin in N*Sync. But N*Sync was gay... Backstreet all the way bby!
okay, i'll stop being 13 again now.
21. a bitch who knows about nsync - August 29, 2008 2:35 PM
wtf why is no one addressing the issue of joey fatone being in the last picture? did they photoshop him in there, too??
22. monkeymuscle - August 29, 2008 2:37 PM
Plus if you take a picture of an object in daylight with the flash on, it makes the [insert obect here] come away from the background. So that's my guess, flash and daylight.
23. guate6 - August 29, 2008 2:40 PM
Badass. I want one.
Those of you unsure what's real, what's not. It's all real, except they booster the contrast. 'nuff said.
24. guate6 - August 29, 2008 2:42 PM
boosted* (not "booster")
25. jesse - August 29, 2008 2:42 PM
@coop
You must have come to the wrong site. "Fagologie" sounds like the one you're looking for.
26. bar room hero - August 29, 2008 2:42 PM
WTF?? Those shoes are bootleg...
27. Ben - August 29, 2008 2:42 PM
@20 Brian was indeed the dreamy one.
28. coop - August 29, 2008 2:48 PM
jesse, that was honestly, the lamest dis I've ever read. Seriously. Just awful. I have no problem getting into an insult war to a guy jerking off to darth vadar photos while his mom washes his captain picard bed sheets, just make it worth my while.
29. Ben - August 29, 2008 2:49 PM
And this whole project is obviously just a way to show off his shoes. Well played, Joey's friend.
30. CaptainMorgan - August 29, 2008 2:52 PM
It would be 100% more credible if the 'fake' pictures were not posted.
BTW...that's not Joey the Fat One. It's actually Robert Schmeigel, a celebrity impersonator. He also does Cher, Elvis (who doesn't), George Clooney and everyone's favourite: Ronald McDonald.
31. Thumperchica - August 29, 2008 2:57 PM
"I have no problem getting into an insult war to a guy jerking off to darth vadar photos while his mom washes his captain picard bed sheets, just make it worth my while."
Ahhh - now we see... Coops mom stopped doing his laundry and he got cranky...
32. roodiedoodie - August 29, 2008 3:02 PM
Shadows give things away every time. So hard to shop them
33. Douglas Edric Stanley - August 29, 2008 3:04 PM
@18... uhhh i think its possible to fake shadows as well in photoshop? im not saying this thing is fake but what the hell kinda argument is "Look at the shadows of everything else in the pictures, they match."
Learn how to use a computer. You non-robot.
34. Emma - August 29, 2008 3:15 PM
@30. CaptainMorgan
i will kill you for ruining my dreams...
35. CaptainMorgan - August 29, 2008 3:22 PM
@34 Emma. Sorry...but why, WHY do you have to always imagine me in my tassled thong speedoes washing my hair out in the rain by moonlight? You know that kills the mood baby....
Robert Schmeigel is a nice guy, really!
36. Emma - August 29, 2008 3:27 PM
@ 35. CaptainMorgan
sorry. sometimes i just can't help it!
37. Tap - August 29, 2008 3:33 PM
If you look at the photos on Gizmodo, the guy apparently also owns a Delorean. He's now officially my hero.
38. Logarr - August 29, 2008 3:46 PM
Okay heres the deal. The photos where its off the ground by a foot? fake. The shadows are all shopped to make it look like its hovering. The shot of the girl driving, and the guys sitting on it are real as the vehicle is sitting on its wheels and is really drivable.
So some of you are half right on the photoshopping. And for the record I'm a graphics specialist at a printing company, I know photoshop.
39. Miles - August 29, 2008 3:48 PM
That is one whore of a photoshop enseble. The key to a decent photshop (IMHO) is to NOT make it look perfect.
40. Eddy - August 29, 2008 4:34 PM
The only question that comes to mind is 'is he single' and 'can I marry him'?
41. Ian - August 29, 2008 5:00 PM
Photoshop...really? Did anyone just consider that he could have the damn thing up on blocks ghetto-steez. Not a single shot shows a clean view all the way under the thing.
42. Logarr - August 29, 2008 5:33 PM
It is possible he could have put it up on blocks. But the problem is the two pics with the truck have the same shadow angles on everything but the speeder. There is a majo angle difference on the speeders shadow cast but hardly any change in the vehicles position.
43. DaBA - August 29, 2008 9:58 PM
Saw one just as good at Burning Man like 4 years ago.
44. ImperialPanda - August 29, 2008 11:29 PM
The vehicle might be real, I don't know, but the photos are definitely photoshop.
Counting the first "making of" photo as #1...
#3:
- Compare the size of the vehicle vs the truck in this photo and in photo 5.
- The shadow of the vehicle does not show the connecting "wing" piece between the engine and the main body. The light source has be relatively horizontal for this to happen, but as you can see from the truck and the mailbox in the background that obviously wasn't the case.
#4:
- Look at the dark line below the front of the vehicle and notice how it cuts off at the beginning of the "shadow" on the left side.
- The front of the "shadow" isn't consistent as it crosses onto the grass.
- The sidewalk is blurry, which makes it evident that the camera was focused more on the tree/bushes, yet the vehicle has clear lines. In addition, the *front* of the vehicle is clearer than the back, which makes this even more obvious.
#5
- Again, compare the blurriness of the shadow to the lower left vs the shadow of the vehicle.
- The vehicle is obviously not aligned properly with the ground.
- Again, wing shadow missing.
There's a ton of smaller mistakes but I'll just point out the most obvious ones.
The last two might actually be real, or might have just been photoshoped by someone with a little more skill. But #3-5 are totally obvious photoshops. I'm also going to call the first photo before the article a shop because of mis-alignment with the street.
45. daniel - August 30, 2008 1:37 PM
I find it funny that several people think that I photoshopped the pics of the speeder. I used a fill flash during a sunny day, that's why the shadows are not consistent. If you're interested, look at my web gallery and watch the video of it driving. I've been building this kind of stuff professionally for twenty years, and have no reason to photo shop these images. We used this speeder for a display at the Star Wars 30th anniversary "Celebration IV".

Hope this clears things up a bit.

A True Lies reference. I fucking love you Geekologist!
47. mike - August 30, 2008 8:17 PM
you guys are retards, the photos are not shopped. The different shadow colours and orientation are the result of camera flash; note the thin dark shadow around the vehicle
48. desilijicclan - August 30, 2008 9:58 PM
No. 1: The guy in the very last picture looks like Joey Fatone. Strange.
No. 2: This is addressed to "coop." You're a trekkie aren't you? I can tell because you are wasting your time looking at awesome Star Wars creations and bashing them. If you ARE indeed a trekkie, get a new hobby because Star Trek only has one memorable line, and that's "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" which was ridiculous... cause it really isn't worth remembering. Of course, William Shatner is awesome...but who cares about Star Trek.
49. monkeymuscle - September 1, 2008 9:11 AM
Wow, Mike. Did it take all your brain enorgiez to copy da ansor >_O
50. corinne - September 3, 2008 1:10 PM

51. Cyberwulf - September 3, 2008 11:45 PM
I must have this thing...
52. Chris Lee - September 5, 2008 3:23 PM
I've sat in this thing. It is real. It was at Celebration IV in Los Angeles last year.
