Aug 19 2008Eye Candy: The Burj Dubai Nears Completion

The Burj Dubai tower, tallest building in the world, is soon to be completed. So photographer David Hobcote took a bunch of high-res pictures from the air to commemorate the 2,087 ft structure. As you can see, the results are breathtaking. And, if you don't start again, potentially lifetaking.
Hit the jump for several more of the ridiculousness.

And this is said the very same day that 43 people were killed in Algeria and 27 others were killed in Pakistan by suicide bombers.
16. Beak Geek - August 19, 2008 4:54 PM
Here I am pissing on this geeky parade with some facts.
This thing has massive bombproof/fireproof reinforced rooms with ridiculously high melting point metals about 2 feet thick, and their own air supplies - every 15 floors: It's not feasible to have fire exits 3000ft up... In case of a terrorist attack you simply trot to the nearest super room and wait it out until someone puts the fire out.

No, obviously you missed the point. What goes around comes around. Besides, gas companies charge what they do for two reasons: 1) limited unrenewable resource and 2) because they can. If you have problems with gas prices stop using or stop complaining.
27. Manuel - August 19, 2008 6:04 PM
I think it was Matt Damon in in some movie that takes place in the middle east which I can't recall right now who said that the arabs were nothing but a bunch of tribes cutting each other's heads off 100 years ago and will be a bunch of tribes cutting each other's heads 100 years from now.
Oil-based economy won't last forever, much less a construction like this in a country like that.
I would be willing to bet that, providing that I die of natural causes within current life expectancy in modern countries, I just might outlive this building with years to spare. I am now in my mid 20's.

This building is going to be amazing when it is done, Dubai does a lot of amazing things that make it a lot of money so they can sustain themselves with or without oil, although I'm sure oil helps.
They built the f***ing world in their sea... if that's not just a wee bit more excessive than building the tallest building for a few years until Taiwan or somewhere else build one taller to spite them, then I don't know what is.
And the only thing to worry about in Dubai is getting ass raped by dudes with AIDS, and that is only if your an underage French boy...
51. L - August 20, 2008 3:15 AM
I drive past this building to & from work every day -- can't wait to see it finished!
As far as Dubai the city goes, its got its good (job ops, weather) & bad (construction everywhere, traffic) points but in the end is still an experience worth checking out. Since coming here from Pennsylvania anyway, I haven't looked back.

According to Genesis 11:1–9, humankind, after the deluge, traveled from the mountain where the ark had rested, and settled in "a plain in the land of Shinar." Here, they attempted to build a city and a tower whose top would be in the Heavens, the Tower of Babel.
The attempt to build the city of Babel with its tower, caused God to respond. He confused the language of the people, ultimately halting the project, and scattered them across the earth.

Some of you really believe that oil is going to run out soon. To enlighten you, there is plenty of oil still to be extracted. In fact, there is enough to last us at least 200 more years. It's just a matter of getting it out of the ground.
I'm sure the most dangerous room (top) in that tower is likely the most expensive to stay in.

Just setting the record straight. The USA is the #1 terrorist state right now. Just look at 9/11 If you think foreign terrorists got NORAD to stand down, got the airforce to halt standard interception of non-responding aircraft, and suspended the laws of physics so 3 steel buildings feel with 0 resistence at free fall speed, YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
In fact, 9/11 was nothing new. It was just one of the plans that was green-lighted. Check out Operation Northwoods, which the Joint Chiefs of Staff planned out (see below). The only reason this didn't happen was because JFK rejected it. Now you know why republiscum hate JFK but love Reagan who sold drugs to inner-cities to fund South American CIA death-squads.
ABCNEWS: U.S. Military Drafted Plans to Terrorize U.S. Cities to Provoke War With Cuba
In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.
Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.
The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.
America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

Dubai has very little oil but they profit from the trade. They are making their money by luring businesses with tax breaks and sweet real estate deals. They also offer a very exploitable immigrant work force that can't leave the country and can't make enough money to get out of the gutter.
71. Tenchi059 - August 20, 2008 4:08 PM
@69: Amen. The problem is people believe too much in media. it doesn't really matter if huge objects defy the laws of physics live in front of the whole world, if the TV says it was due to those planes then it must be true, and everybody suspend any kind of personal, intelligent thinking.

Eh. So many people, so many different views.
I want to apologize for #56. That's the sort of typical underage pre-teen spirit that has given us Americunts such a bad rap.
@ #57 news flash asshat. We all hate Bush. But what do you expect from a skewed system? We've basically backed our so called "Democracy" into a corner. We have two pools of retards to draw from. The greedy oil money, burn the world who gives shit conservatives, called Republicans. And the tree hugging hippy spewing liberal nut jobs called Democrats. That said the Britfags are just as screwed with their system in some ways.
@ #55 Take your religious views and shove them up a tight orifice. Little knowledge for you. The worlds oldest two professions: religion and prostitution. That should say something. Don't get me wrong. Faith is a good thing. But organized religion is a sham. Catholicism itself is one of the biggest multi-billion dollar corporations on the face of the earth.
Their not terrorists? really. What do you call people who kill each other over some scrap of parchment that was compiled centuries ago? fanatics? maybe.
The Kurds kill the Shi`ites because their not Kurds. The Shi`ites kill the Sunni's because their not Shi`ites. The Shi`ites kill the Kurds becuase their.... Do we see a pattern forming here?
It's the same sort of Clan/Feudal based bullshit the British, Scottish, and Irish went through. Which might I add still happens to an extent today.
On a side note. wouldn't it be irony if someone flew an airplane into that building........

75. KS - August 21, 2008 8:26 AM
to those who are making remarks on YOUR dollars paying for this stuff through oil, the US is practically stealing the stuff, for instance in Germany, petrol is over $10 a gallon, so consider yourselves lucky. the $5 you pay is only lining the pockets YOUR government, so if you've got a problem take it up with those cunts. i wonder how much oil would cost everyone if the US had all the reserves. i dread to think.

As an American in good standing(meaning: tax paying and voting) I take no offense at the rancor displayed here. Hey, it's always been the richest dude on the block that everyone loves to hate and since we have the biggest shoulders in town,,,
You're correct in assuming, if America had the oil,Y'All would STILL be paying thru the nose,,,and it would be the same no matter who owned it.
One thing Y'All should remember(well, maybe, two things, if you have enough memory):
1) North America was settled by religious fanatics, escaping from righteous persecution in their original homelands. There's a prescription for disaster,,,
2) The USA is still the only nation on earth that was insane enough to nuke a couple of hundred thousand people out of existence. I suppose that was the major reason Khruscheve thought twice about the Cuban missile crises and backed down. I always respected him for that.
America is just like everybody else, acquisitive, narrow minded, loving and occasionally generous. Now, when China becomes the biggest dog on the block, watch out,,,
PS: I really like mega engineering projects. Shows just how far we busy beavers can go, trying to impress out neighbors,,,

Just think... If the money used for this were to be put towards cancer research or feeding the starving, the human race in general would benefit. As it stands, it's just a very tall building for wealthy people, and so with that attitude the human race is done for.

I wouldn't mind to go on the top of building, but not without a parachute! I don't understand why can't they have backup plan by storing parachutes in each rooms for any skyscraper building? It will prevent free fall to death. Imagine twin towers in NY have parachutes stores in each rooms, we can see dramatic reduce in number of deaths. Scout honor, for every skyscraper that I go, I will not go without parachutes!
