Aug 11 2008UPDATE: 8 People Buy $1,000 'I Am Rich' iPhone App, Now With Video Tour!

Armin Heinrich made a $1,000 iPhone application called "I Am Rich" that doesn't do anything but open a picture of a glowing red gem. That way, nobody will feel bad about stealing your phone. And, God willing, punching you in the teeth with a car.
The app displays a glowing red gem on a user's iPhone screen for the sole purpose of proving to onlookers one is of the moneyed class. That's all it does.
You know, there are a lot better ways to let people know you're rich than a damn iPhone application. Including, but not limited to: grillz, throwing money from your car, and getting your member gold plated and/or diamond encrusted. But the real sick part of this story is that 8 people bought the application before iTunes pulled it. And you know what? IT WAS ME 8 TIMES! Suck it, peasants!
UPDATE: Video tour of the app and a link to a hacked version after the jump thanks to Tony, who may or may not be in the mob.
Hit the jump for several more pictures, a video tour, and a link to the hacked app. You're rich!

EDIT: Apparently not rich enough for a proper grammar, it should read "If it's too expensive" and not "if it's TO expensive"
PWNED Snobitch! A true aristocrat (like myself) would never be caught with his/her pants down in such a way (and then, repeatedly raped with different objects, then killed, then raped again).
Liberté, Egalité, Gramatiqué!

1,000$ and the guy couldn't even use proper grammar?
'If it's to expensive for you...'

Actually, at least 2 idiots who bought it said they did it as a joke or somthing like that (probably while drunker than their mom on the day she got pregnant with these fools), and were refunded.

Amazing, this douchebag is charging $999 for this app, and he doesn't even know how to spell. I hope the app has an added feature where you press a button and a hand comes out and removes your genitals so you can't reproduce. I weep for humanity
10. qwerty - August 11, 2008 10:33 AM
FAKE, it wont show up in the itunes store. when i search the app name it dosent come up and when i search the developer he has only 1 app, a calculator.
11. El Basto - August 11, 2008 10:38 AM

Can someone with tagging privs add a "moneycan'tbuyclass" to this and the Burberry Monstrosity?
It really seems like it's developing into its own full-blown category here.

there's a market for everything, this is what makes America "America". I've even seen a shape shit cutter where you can make heart shape lincoln logs in your toilet bowl.
the person who created that app for iPhone and made 8k is a smart ass, do I think its ridiculous? yes, I think its dumb but that guy still made 8k.
the world is all material based and class status for owning things other's can't. this includes that dumb app for the iPhone. also why people pay $100s for an Ed Hardy shirt that looks gay as hell? there is a market for it and people buy them like crazy all over the world.

"It's been removed. Not supprising though, like Apple would let someone make money like that off their back."
Correct, only apple is allowed to make money like that.
19. zoobondo - August 11, 2008 12:11 PM
i wonder why itunes removed it. other than it being a waste of money and a pointless app. i wanna know the legal reason.

23. guate6 - August 11, 2008 1:46 PM
#17: you're partially correct. The "world" isn't like that, it's mostly the U.S.
I'd like to say I'm surprised people bought the application, but honestly I'm not.
:(

I'd say that a great deal of countries outside the US would have similar consumption parameters should they have that amount of wealth that widely distributed.
On the other hand, the fact that a huge amount of the US wealth is in the hands of new rich or of spoiled kids also adds lumber to the fire.
Wealthy aristocrats would never act in this fashion and so, in countries were they represent the vast majority of the rich, the less educated millionaire will usually try to emulate them, thus not committing such crimes against taste and class.
It's a symptom of a mostly meritocratic society, which is by most means more efficient and fair than an otherwise nepotist one.

You may be rich, but if you're buying an iPhone, and buying this stupid thing for it, then you're stupid.
26. Icon - August 11, 2008 4:11 PM

Had you read the article, I wouldn't have had to read through 15 posts in the first place of you making stupid comments.
What am I kidding, I don't do anything at work but browse this website.

28. MeeMee - August 11, 2008 4:26 PM
If only a guy had bought it, by mistake, then sure, but dam it, not even 7 people would be this styupid. This is just asking for a good explanation.
Could be that Apple is seeding some coins in the basket to entice shoppers, save everyone the embarrasment of being FIRST to buy any app.
Is there a butterfly form to fill in when buying these things? Do old ppl in Florida buy iPhones?
29. ctrl+shift design lab - August 11, 2008 9:59 PM
for all those wondering why it was actually removed. Well from what I have been told by apple colleagues...
it does not represent the brand identity that Apple is associated to. The iphone was not created for that purpose of glorification, and simply it is bad press for a new communications corporate to suggest that they are only offering products for those who 'are rich'....An icon such as this defies the very presence of their brand and their products which serve to help people. It is also possible to view such an icon as way to detract potential customers from their brand considering they don't even make a dent in the computer industry. Macintosh is small in comparison to the rest of the computer world. They serve approx. 1% of the total market of computer sales. With respect to hand held devices, since the inception of the iphone RIM sales in comparison have continued to increase approx. 17% over each quarter give or take a few...If Apple is doing anything right now, its telling people to at least get on the tech bandwagon...
Hence why an app like this can destroy their image and opportunity to increase customer base...
Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive have worked to hard for a mid level designer to fart around with their work.

I won't pay that much for something with bad grammar. :P

Wow that's stupid! I'm annoyed at myself for spending almost 2 minutes watching a guy show me a red dot.
Seriously, can we get the names of the 8 people who bought it? I don't want to hurt them a great deal.. I just want to softly punch them in the back of the head..
33. blah - August 13, 2008 11:49 PM
Everyone keeps commenting on the bad grammar. How do we know that the guy who created this app didn't do that on purpose? This mantra couldn't be viewed before purchasing the app, I'm assuming. Wasn't that suppose to be part of the allure, the mantra only you could view? Anyway, this guy thinks, ok I'm going to prove how stupid our world is and create this absurd app and charge an absurd amount of money for it and someone out there will purchase it. Once they've spent their $999, they will open the app and discover their ridiculous mantra that is misspelled and blah blah. Mission accomplished, he made the purchaser hopefully feel like a dumbass for spending so much money on something so stupid.
Bottom line, the creator is a genius. He made a shitload of money off stupid people and basically gave them the middle finger for it. Or he really is an idiot, what do I know?
