Jul 8 2008Surprised?: Dubai Constructing World's Largest Water Fountain. Up Next: Everything Else

In an announcement that surprised absolutely no one, Dubai has voiced its intention of building the world's largest and fanciest water fountain (not of the drinking variety.
Costing a whopping $281 million, the new fountains will shoot water 450 feet into the air and pump 22,000 gallons of water through it at any given time. 6,600 lights and 50 projectors will shoot video and images onto the spray as its in the air...
Cool, I guess. I mean, I love a good fountain show as much as the next person stoned out of their mind, but this seems a little excessive. Why does everything have to be so extreme? You're not trying to make up for anything down there are you, Dubai? Sure, I'll take a loo...MY EYE! So much for that theory.
Hit the jump for what the fountain looks like if you're tripping.

Oh, so that's where my $4.59 per gallon of gas money is going.
OK. I dont feel so pissed off anymore...
2. Momboelitist - July 8, 2008 1:35 PM
As much as I am First, it's really only in a perverse way that I take pleasure from it. Some of us will never be first and that is truly a shame. To be first you must first become firsty and only then will you have the firstness to really take the next step of firsthood.
But until then, FIRST!!!!!

...or not

Good for Dubai, again showing the world how it should be done. Meanwhile in the US, work on the - ahem - "Freedom Tower" at the WTC site has again been halted because er.... because...well it just has. And it's still a gret big hole and the last 4 years of work has amounted to absolutely fack all.
Just for a change.

LOL @ Momboeelitist.
6. Momboelitist - July 8, 2008 1:37 PM
Oh crap!! I knew I spoke too soon!
Well, it's not so bad being second! In fact some of our greatest people have been second. I can't think of any right now but believe me, they are out there. So it is with great honor that I accept the position of:
SECOND!
7. Momboelitist - July 8, 2008 1:40 PM
Seems I spend too much time lamenting over my position. This truly is a problem of epic proportions as I have been dumped down the line. Seeing as I can't be first or second I'll just say this:
F@#K each and every one of you.
8. Superevil - July 8, 2008 1:41 PM
Hey Momboelitist do you ever leave your mom's basement?
9. Momboelitist - July 8, 2008 1:43 PM
@8, only when I'm at your house doing your mom! *SNAP!*
10. matt - July 8, 2008 1:58 PM
Yet again, an economy that is going well blinds the decision makers to making good decisions.
11. VickyStarr - July 8, 2008 2:01 PM
Damn that would hurt if you somehow managed to drift underneath the fountain ..... *imagines 22,000 gallons of water falling 450 ft onto her head*
Well at least it looks pretty.

70% of comments so far are about Momboelitist`s mistake, do any of us have lives?

Thank God for the Tree-Huggers keeping us from drilling our oil. That way, Dubai can keep building monumental projects. Yay!

17. klitorisaurus - July 8, 2008 2:27 PM
I'm thinking a trip to Dubai will be in my future, they build some pretty cool shit there. If they have lax drinking laws and prostitutes I'll be there next week!
18. nick - July 8, 2008 2:31 PM
Seriously, dubai is f***ed up. they spend like 3 billion dollars a year to make all this crap, and for what? I think some country is trying to make up for its tiny supply of oil. Or its leader having a f***ing small dick
19. Momboelitist - July 8, 2008 2:34 PM
@18: They're making up for my tiny penis.
20. TetterkeT - July 8, 2008 2:42 PM
Ah, Dubai: where they build everything huge and restrict fun on all levels. Oh, don't even think of getting a prostitute there, #17, and definitely, positively, under no circumstances bring any drugs (not even prescription) or pornography with you. If you even test positive for a drug (i.e. you popped a valium before the flight) you can be imprisoned for up to 15 years. YEARS! F*** that country.

1: @12 i agree, thank you tree-huggers, thank you for helping us line the middle east's pockets *sarcasm*
2: does anyone else think the people of dubai are over-compensating for something?... *implication*

Thank you all! I never knew I could be so popular! Especially when my name is stolen....
@14, follow along, it's sarcastic humor.
25. Sam - July 8, 2008 4:36 PM
Erm, I could be wrong but I dont think all of Dubai's constructions are built with Dubai money. A lot of it could be from outside funding. Large international companies who realised it's a good idea to build attractive stuff at a huge tourist destination. So, not necessarily our gas money. . .
26. Quase - July 8, 2008 4:39 PM
Oh, I dont mind paying 12 bucks a gallon, as long as it goes into pretty sculptures and things...
F*** YOU DUBAI...
27. Arcturus - July 8, 2008 5:04 PM
I can't imagine how f***ing loud that's going to be once it's completed.
28. Amy - July 8, 2008 6:30 PM
Well this is about the dumbest idea ever. At that height, the water jets will just become mist and spray all over the place. They'll never have a good hair day again in the city! Oh the humanity! Oh, the humidity!

"Ahmed! Ahmed! Today is a most wondrous day, for the Merciful One has propounded to me a divine fatwa to govern our future forever!! We are to squander our family's vast wealth in as extravagant a fashion as can be devised and post-haste - that we may return to chopping each other's heads off in the desert!!"

32. Anexio - July 8, 2008 9:45 PM
Hey #2 Momboelitist, Awwww, so close! You coulda been first but tried to be clever and you f***ed the pooch.
But regarding Dubai, they can build all the cool shit they want but they're still nothing but smelly sand nig gers and when the oil runs out they'll go back to f***in' camels and Michael Jackson.
Yep, I'm a bitter, bitter man.
33. Nomad - July 9, 2008 12:22 AM
I think it's a waste of money. Forget that it's expensive to build that thing, but all the energy it will be using....
34. Clem - July 9, 2008 12:18 PM
BTW - the reason gas/petrol is so expensive is taxation levied my our own governments and the oil companies' profits, not the countries where it comes from. It's not like they are building great looking hotels, islands and buildings out of our pockets - our gov'ts blow all our tax dollars on invasions and weapons. Dubai knows full well that after the oil has gone it has nothing other than decent weather and that is why they are doing their utmost to cultivate a tourism industry before that happens. And the rest of the Middle East would be wise to follow suit.....once they've rebuilt their countries.
35. Kathleen - July 9, 2008 12:48 PM
What a waste of water.

38. snowman121 - August 31, 2008 3:58 PM
Dubai is so fake and it will not last! Only thing keeps it running is oil money. When oil crash, it will be a ghost town. There is no culture, no democratic system, just a desert mirage for people to make a quick buck and get out. It is not sustainable like other major cities around world with hundreds or thousand year history. Dubai is a complete fraud, don't go there!! A city without a soul is so pathetic.
