Jul 9 2008Steampunk Guitar Looks Good, Pointy

steampunk-guitar.jpg

This is a steampunk guitar. It's functional. You may love it. Or you may hate it because you hate everything steampunk. Or you may hate it because your girlfriend cheated on you with a musician. Whatever the case, you either love it or hate it. Or just think it's okay. One of those three. Or, okay, maybe you're indifferent. But definitely one of four. Unless you love it sometimes, hate it others, and don't care the rest. Or if you, I dunno, wow I'm high. Cookie Crisp in chocolate milk for the win.

Hit the jump for another steampunkish guitar. And by "steampunkish" I mean it has a custom pick guard that looks like gears.

Those guitars are pretty F'n sweet.

The coffin case is just silly, and the grey plasticyness makes it not look like good steampunk.
Good idea, bad execution.

And I dissagree with whatever the post after me says.

I've been looking at it for 5 minutes and I've already gone through two boxes of kleenex.

This is kinda stupid.
I mean, an electric guitar with passive pickups does not need electricity in the first place. Why would it need steam power?
It looks cool an all, but i don't consider it "proper" steampunk. Just a guitar with tubes. sexy tubes.

@ #3 Roflmao that was funny... i think the steampunk guitar is cool ....the gear one looks like someone put a sticker over the pick guard.

Are you required to wear the funky goggles whilst playing said steampunk guitars? And if so, can I get them in my prescription?

Funny, I have yet to see anything resembling steam in any steampunk design.

The top one looks more Borg than steampunk, hardly Victorian styling at all. While the second is a good idea, but it's just a sticker. I am a fan of steampunk, when there's effort behind the project.

This is old.

I agree with #8. Another stupid looking mod that doesnt even run on steam. I would love to see a "steampunk" ANYTHING that actually DID run on steam. The truth is, the people making this crap arent as mechanically inclined as their desperate attempts at art would have you believe.

Verdict: Lame

Also, with the style of guitar that they used, good luck finding a metal musican lame enough to play it.

... this steampunk themed-thingy is getting pretty ridiculous

Personally...
The first guitar is very nice. Y'all complain that it is hardly Victorian and doesn't run on steam... well, it's just a fucking style. Get over it. It's not a lifestyle or a movement; steampunk is aesthetic.
The second one, which I actually had seen before, is nice in an easy-to-do-yourself kinda way. While it took less effort, it was also probably much cheaper and easier.

WELL.
The top one would be better without that bit at the top connected by the brass pipes.

And Jake von Slatt's guitar is NOT a sticker. He made an entirely new pick plate for it, using his brass etching technique.
Here is the project page:

I think the first one deserves props for making an attempt to look as if it really could run on steam. That was probably the idea behind the pipes. Here's an idea, though. How about a steampunk pipe organ? That way, it actually COULD run on steam. I'm just sayin.

The first guitar is appropiated to a tecno-punk band like atari teenage riot.

Holy crap, that is so incredible cool, especially the first one.

Hey emily (#13)...

"Because of the popularity of steampunk with people in the goth, punk, cyber and Industrial subcultures, there is a growing movement towards establishing steampunk or "Steam" as a culture and lifestyle. The most immediate form of steampunk subculture is the community of fans surrounding the genre. Others move beyond this, attempting to adopt a "steampunk" aesthetic through fashion, home decor and even music. This movement may also be (more accurately) described as "Neo-Victorianism", which is the amalgamation of Victorian aesthetic principles with modern sensibilities and technologies."

You are obviously talking out of your ass. Maybe to you steampunk is only aesthetic, but to some people, some LAME people, it is indeed a movement and/or lifestyle. You're wrong. Deal with it.

1) Steampunk is fucking lame.
2) The Flying V is the worst shape for a guitar, EVAR.
3) Steampunk is fucking lame.

srsly, do steampuke fans just sit around and whack off to Wild Wild West, or what? Is that what the whole idea is? Or is it some kind of retarded fad aimed at making modern objects look antiquated and "futuristic" at the same time?

First one is old, second one I haven't seen before.

@11: Then do it, fagot. All talk, no dick.

@19: You're an idiot.

Forgot to add this:

Note: 13 wins.

Steampunk isn't completely steam. It's Victorian and early Edwardian, so that obviously means spats, corsettes, vests, and the like. The goggles are because everyday people are symbolic of middle income workers, and so goggles and spats are obviously part of design, but originally for protection. As for the clocks and stuff... gears and steam were good modes of industrializing.

However, to actually make something work on steam, you are insane, because you'd need something to heat the water, and something to cool down the water, which is not possible for something small, decorative, and portable.

It's also not about futuristic. That's cyberpunk. Steampunk is really the aesthetic appeal of "what if" in the central idea of, "What if we stayed with steam and gears?" Industrial revolution would change, etc, but in a paralinear existance, because time and advancements might be about the same, it's all speculation and artistic value.

Now, gtfo.

it is impossible to create something that everyone can appreciate. not one thing can be for all. Im certain that there are a lot of things that you would consider cool but others would consider lame. the world does not revolve around you so if all you can do is say LAME and couldnt produce any constructive critism, you might as well shut up. It makes you look extremely uneducated and uncivilized.
Just because it's called steampunk, doesnt mean it should run on steam.
Personally, i like this design. Its unique and very different. It would actually be interesting if smoke, simulating steam, could spray out of the valves with a push of a button.

Yeah, no one has posted in this corner of cyberspace for quite some time.

For the record, the first one is awesome, the second sucks
