Jul 30 2008Officer Brutally Rams Cycler From Bike

Remember Officer Rivieri? Good. Well, during the New York Critical Mass bike ride (a monthly protest against motor vehicle reliance) some other officer of the law decided to show the crowd how he feels about our reliance on motor vehicles. Apparently he freaking loves it, at least enough to running body slam some guy off his bicycle (VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP!). The cop has since had his badge and gun yanked while the incident is being investigated.
The video, posted anonymously, shows the officer standing in the street as bikes whiz past. He moves toward a cyclist and violently knocks him to the ground in front of crowds of people. The biker, Christopher Long, of Hoboken, N.J., was arrested because he was obstructing traffic in the heart of Times Square, a criminal complaint said. He was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground.
During his arrest, Long squirmed and kicked, saying to the officers, "You are pawns in the game. I'm gonna have your job," the complaint said.
Okay, it definitely didn't look deliberate on the part of the biker. That cop wanted to see dude's head splatter. And why on earth Long would tell the cops they're "pawns in the game" during his arrest, well, that's just not smart. They're at least the little castles.
Hit the jump for the video. It's worth a look.

While I think the officer is for sure a idiot, maybe the effort for "bike awareness" could be pulled off a little better than to block traffic and piss more cars off. Seems pretty counter productive to me.

What do you expect from little dick cops with a chip on their shoulder? After all, THEY are the law and everyone should take note of that.
Good riddance you piece of shit ass-clown pig.
12. Jumpin_J - July 30, 2008 11:19 AM
What's more interesting, the cyclist is a Vietnam Vet. The dude is so right if he meant what he said that he'll have have the cop's job. Plus the cop's police report claims "that upon instructing the defendant to cease the above-described conduct, the defendant steered the defendant's bicycle in the direction of [cop] and drive defendant's bicycle directly into [cop's] body; causing [cop] to fall to the ground and causing [cop] to suffer lacerations on [cop's] forearms."
Unless the video was bigtime edited, it's clear the cop is also guilty of perjury by filing a false arrest report. This cop better have a damn good excuse, like it was the meds, PTSD, or God told him to do it. Otherwise he's screwed.
13. HoboCode - July 30, 2008 11:20 AM
OUTRAGEOUS! F***ing pig cop. The biker did everyhtign he could to avoid him. That was a premeditated attack.
14. PinoyNinja - July 30, 2008 11:22 AM
Apparently in USA, we ALL love our policemen.
Wait a minute... no we don't!
15. Tim - July 30, 2008 11:25 AM
f*** the police - I've seen one or two good cops, but the rest are pricks.
16. quenossy - July 30, 2008 11:30 AM
12, how can the cyclist be a Vietnam Vet if the report says he's 29 years old?
Almost all cops are liars because their cruisers read "protect and serve" while their apparent code of conduct is "harass and annoy."
And what's this bullshit about the cyclist's name being released but not the cop's?
Lastly, calling cops "pigs" is defamation of swine.
17. Uncle Eccoli - July 30, 2008 11:36 AM
I hate cops. I hate them all. Seriously, if some method could be found to harness the energy of my sheer contempt for cops I could power the whole of North America.
18. joe - July 30, 2008 11:39 AM
@Jumpin_J you are a friggin' moron. The biker is a Viet Nam vet who was born 4 years after the fall of Saigon. Nice.
The cop was an idiot, but f*** Critical Mass. The biker doesn't have a prayer in court. "Your honor, I was participating in an unlicensed lawless protest where an organized mob takes over the streets and then this cop hit me!"
19. pirhan - July 30, 2008 11:50 AM
Seriously guys - you only know one side of the story and that's hardly enough to condemn this officer. How about we wait until the report is complete before picking up our pitchforks and stakes?
20. Julian - July 30, 2008 11:52 AM
wow, no one on here loves cops? I love cops, If i could find a hot one that wouldnt arrest me for being too damn sexy, I would def love to bone one.
call me an old fashioned New Yorker but I like it when my cops beat the crap out of hippies. The cyclist was lucky to land on his ass he could have really hurt his head.
21. Aero - July 30, 2008 11:58 AM
@joe-july
How do you figure he has no chance in court? Officer files a false report, and we have evidence to back that up. When did the right to protest include knocking you down like a sack of sh!t.
And if that is a legal form to stop the protest then why the hell didn't he do it to everyone?
This guy gives cops a bad rep. There are a lot of good ones but for the few morons like this guy.
22. Smile - July 30, 2008 11:58 AM
We need a revolution. The system is broken and all our rights are gone.
23. Uncle Eccoli - July 30, 2008 12:04 PM
@19 One side of the story? How many sides does the video cover? Oh, none? What about the police report? I was ready to condemn the rat bastard before I even knew he existed and still will be after this is over whether he's let off or not. What, are you a cop's kid or something?
My pitchfork is permanently attached to my hand - anyone seen without one in this world is a f***ing collaborator.
That got a bit out of hand, there. Nothing against you, pirhan, I just really f***ing hate cops.
24. Hiipy's are smelly - July 30, 2008 12:05 PM
Maybe they should tell those Bikers that NYC is for Mafia, Immigrants, and shooting people. They should move to Boulder where that type of "Social Protest" is considered cool and meaningful. :)

Oh you guys are great. I knew I'd like it here.
28. Tenchi059 - July 30, 2008 12:16 PM
The usual moron cop, thinking he and only he is the man to be respected, sometimes (in this case, too) even without any provocation, just because he's probably pissed off for some reason.
It happens in every country, every day. Sad but true.
29. logan - July 30, 2008 12:22 PM

30. grihm - July 30, 2008 12:27 PM

31. Bender - July 30, 2008 12:30 PM
I work with the police, so you may think I'm going to defend this guy. I'm not. He's a bastard and deserves to lose a few months of pay and get a nice civil suit to boot. Not all cops are like this, though. The bad ones make them all look bad. Anyone who simply says, "I hate the police" would bitch mightily if their house was robbed and no one came to help.
An idea! If you're the victim of a crime and you say you hate cops, how about you save us the trouble and the taxpayer's money and f*** off? After all, you hate the cops, so why should they give a f*** about you?
32. Error401 - July 30, 2008 12:55 PM
Looked like a perfectly legal hockey check to me. Wait, where's the ice?
33. g - July 30, 2008 12:55 PM
Wwhile i understand that they are there for a reason, the system is F'ed up.
I live in Colorado. These cops just got busted for double submitting speeding tickets to meet their "nonexistent" quotas for the month. So screwed up.
34. Will - July 30, 2008 12:58 PM
wow, you have to love when the police ignore crime and attack the innocents... And to all of you who think its a lawless protest; there are actually laws protecting your right to peacefully amass and peacefully protest to your hearts content. Its just sort of, kind of, well, one of the keystone principals of democracy. Critical mass is but one way that people are trying to drastically change the way we percieve these types of social issues. It is just unfortunate that right wingers can't see the difference between 'lawlessness' and social reform. Bollocks!
35. Fuck the Po'lice - July 30, 2008 1:06 PM
bender- That guy deserves to get fired. You don't hire criminals to catch criminals. That was assault, caught on camera, and he used his position AS A POLICE OFFICER to further victimize a citizen he was paid to protect. And you think he should just get a suspension? He SHOULD be arrested, but I'd settled for him getting sacked and then sued out the ass.
I'm actually of the opinion that half the police force is comprised of honorable men and women. The other half is comprised of bullies that like to abuse their power. I'm just glad the guy was stupid and arrogant enough to do this in front of a crowd. Thank God for cell phone cameras and cam-corders. No way would this cop be reprimanded if it hadn't been caught on tape, no matter HOW many witnesses contradicted his statement. It's disgusting and if the police really cared about their image, they'd weed out more of these pricks and throw them on the pyre when they show their true colors.
36. Abner Louima - July 30, 2008 1:14 PM
#31- "An idea! If you're the victim of a crime and you say you hate cops, how about you save us the trouble and the taxpayer's money and f*** off? After all, you hate the cops, so why should they give a f*** about you?"
BECAUSE THAT'S THEIR JOB, ASSHAT. I don't care if, in their heart of hearts, they're totally unsympathetic and don't give a crap. I just want them to DO THEIR JOBS. If they don't want to do it, then they can quit. And wow, saving taxpayer's money? Way to think about the little guy. Most victims don't pay taxes at all. And those taxes don't fund police coffers.
The problem is that these instances CONTINUALLY crop up, and the cops almost NEVER get charged to the full extent of the law BECAUSE they're cops. Which, in my mind, is the exact OPPOSITE of how it should go down, because they're IN UNIFORM when they pull these stunts. That just compounds they're offense. They abused their positions and the community's trust in the entire INSTITUTION.
37. Uncle Eccoli - July 30, 2008 1:20 PM
I hate cops because my house was robbed and nobody came to help.
Not really, but damn, Bender, that didn't make any sense at all. Tell your colleagues I said, "F*** you," would you? Thanks.
38. Davis - July 30, 2008 1:36 PM
Good, Those critical massers in SF are all pricks. They think just cuz they get a day a week/month they can ride around all high and mighty and spit on and ram all the cars that try to move around them. He should have used a night stick and taken him down even harder. F*** THOSE ASSHOLE BIKERS!
39. JM - July 30, 2008 1:38 PM
I definitely saw a few things wrong with this video:
1. I think the night stick would have been more effective, but if you're going to take a dude off a bike, a solid hip check would have more success than going up high.
2. No taser? Really? The guy was probably writhing in pain on the ground, that could totally be played off as "reaching for a weapon" or "trying to flee the scene". Zap em and keep pressing the button till you hear their balls pop.
3. Don't NYC cops have spike strips? That's a real quick way to end a bike protest.
4. God I hate hippies. These bikers wanna be treated as vehicles, yet they fly around on sidewalks and skim in between cars anytime there's a stoppage in traffic. Get a real job and lay off the crack.
40. Right Fury - July 30, 2008 3:02 PM
F*** critical mass.
F*** hybrids
F*** Liberals
F*** Bicycles
41. Andyman - July 30, 2008 3:15 PM
That video has been editied. What you don't hear before the"victim" rides into the scene is, "GET OUTTA MY F***IN' WAY YOU F***IN' PIG BEFORE I MOW YOUR F***IN' ASS OVER!"
42. Concerned NYC'er - July 30, 2008 3:27 PM
@41
I was there. He didn't say exactly that, but It was something similar.
Sure there are a few bad apples (pun intended) but most of the NYPD are hard working decent people.
43. Right Fury - July 30, 2008 3:33 PM
It's hard to be a decent person when you deal with scumbags like these day in and day out. There's plenty of f***ing crime in New york without these selfish f***wits causing mass pandemonium. When these smug ass hippies do this it causes traffic jams all over the city. Guess what numbnuts? If you call 911 for a COP or an AMBULANCE during that time, how long do you think it's gonna take to get there?
Do this shit in Denver where people give a f***. Better yet, do it in south central LA, see how long your little pansy ass bike ride lasts.
44. Andyman - July 30, 2008 3:45 PM
@42 Really? I was just making a joke. Uncanny. Anybody want any lottery numbers?
45. pirhan - July 30, 2008 4:07 PM
Uncle Eccoli - that's fine, no offense taken. I see cops as necessary as taxes. Without taxes, there would be no roads or schools. Without cops, there would be chaos. I like my life without drama, and a few bad apples here and there (if this is the case) is well worth it to me. :)
46. Ignorance is Bliss - July 30, 2008 4:25 PM
I agree with 45, i like my govt. to take care of every little thing for me, from telling me how fast to drive, to feeding and clothing me. If some INDIVIDUALS take advantage of their positions for their own personal agenda then it's their right for working so hard to get to the position they are at. and if that leads to global war and economic hardship then i just trust that the programs enacted by your taxes will take care of me.

@ 48 - Good shit, let's make it happen. I saw the skateboarder thing.
And to all of dumbshits above, this isn't an instance of the Man trying to keep us down. You're right to an extent, but the corrupt government didn't make that asshole cop tackle that biker.

52. Amaranth - July 30, 2008 6:07 PM
once again this is Bloomberg's fault for letting "anyone" becoming police officers, he chose quantity over quality. its ridiculous how stupid some these cops are these days. would you trust a 300 pound fat man/woman cop to save your life when things go down? so many officers out of shape are on duty all over the city. not to mention how it took many quality officers in special fields out of duty from all the quantity in numbers.
I have a friend of mine in the NYPD and he is stunned to see a guy he arrested a few years back put behind bars and now that same crook is in the same precinct working as a police officer... it's all BS at this point. So many cops are crooks in disguise with badges now.
53. malken - July 30, 2008 6:24 PM

Funniest thing I've seen all week.....bikers should be brutalized!
55. Airsickmoth - July 30, 2008 9:07 PM
I would love to see this cop body check a taxi because it is obstructing traffic during rush hour when it stops to let someone out.
56. its a trap - July 30, 2008 10:50 PM
Copy pasta from Wiki:
On July 25, 2008, a NYC Critical Mass rider was arrested and charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. A video surfaced that showed NYPD officer Patrick Pogan shoving the bicyclist to the ground.[42] The officer was placed on desk duty pending an investigation. [43] [44] [45] [46]
57. justsayin - July 31, 2008 2:25 AM
You are cycling along, and an officer comes toward you. Do you.
1. Try to avoid him.
2. Stop, and see what the cop wants.
The cyclist had plenty of time to stop.
Just sayin'

Its obvious the cop are looking for a specific person. The video ends with a woman bicycler dragging away with the victims bike. Since she doesn't seem to concerned about the fate of the victim it suggest she's probably the one tailing him, alerting the police. Perhaps he stole the bike from a friend of hers, and she followed him, calling the cops on her cellular.
That said, the cop doesn't even try to signal the victim to stop, but instead sends him head first into a cluttered sideway. A lamppost can give serious head trauma even kill at this speed. So, its excesive violence, judgement and punishment with no trial. Since he wasn't charged with theft that might have been a false accussation, or perhaps the wrong guy, wich is excatly why everyone should before a judge.
62. v - July 31, 2008 9:11 AM
I love how everyone's against the NYPD, but really, most cops are decent guys who do their jobs. That being said, I dislike figures of authority, including cops, but they do what they do. Of course there are assholes.
Like this guy. What a f***ing asshole. He went out of his way to kick the crap out of the biker. Also, the biker did try to get out of the way. If you follow him specifically with your eyes, he goes to the left and the officer smacks the shit out of him.
With this video, that cop has no chance.
63. Amaranth - July 31, 2008 9:52 AM
i really wonder how many of you guys commenting actually live in NYC to understand the situation like this. this guy was lucky enough to have many witnesses on his abuse. so many countless cases of power abuse in the city here. I understand that not everyone can be perfect in a large force but there needs to be a point where someone puts their foot down and fire the ones that aren't qualified. I know several retired police officers who are just as disappointed on their performance in the streets with these new officers. Would you have any respect for police officer that is on his cellular phone smoking a cigarette with corn rows on his head covered in tattoos and no hat on? I have countless women police officers with their hair braided in all directions and gossiping about celebrities to other officers in the middle of the street. Is this what our tax money is paying for in NY? It's just what my friend in the NYPD said, "Its the most unprofessional professional job in the world."

66. John Arbuckle - July 31, 2008 4:46 PM
Actually if you look closely it's quite apparent that the bicyclist veered into the cop at the last second.
Most of the pricks riding in Critical Mass do this shit on purpose. Usually it's just attacking people in their vehicles but this time it looks like a cop was targeted.
67. Jonat - July 31, 2008 8:25 PM
@66 - Not really. He was probably planning on just going around the cop, and that's exactly what he would have done if he were to do that.
