Jul 29 2008Cuil: Google's New Competition?

cuil-search.jpg

Well if you haven't heard there's a new search engine that just moved in down the block and it's taunting the most indexed web pages (120 billion, 3x more than others) and a new way to display search results. From the company:

Cuil (pronounced COOL) provides organized and relevant results based on Web page content analysis. The search engine goes beyond today's search techniques of link analysis and traffic ranking to analyze the context of each page and the concepts behind each query. It then organizes similar search results into groups and sorts them by category.

And, according to the Huffington Post, people have been checking it out.

This morning the Google competitor started by former Google employees topped Google Trends. This means that people were using Google to find it's spunky new competitor. Misspellings of Cuil and Cuil's founder, Anna Paterson, were also top searches. Google may have been discouraged by this until they see 'Hot Trend' number 35, 'cuil sucks.'

Personally, I don't know if Cuil sucks or not because I've always been an Askjeeves kind of guy. Ha, did I just say that out loud? What I meant to say was The Geekologie Writer doesn't use search engines, the information comes to him. I just concentrate real hard on what I need aaaaaaand....CH34P V1@GR@. Shit, ladies I swear...

Cuil Website

and
Ouch- Cuil Dominates Google Trends [huffingtonpost]

Thanks to Matthew and SPM, who search the interwebs the old fashioned way, with bow and arrow.

Wow...why couldnt they just call it "cool" instead of spelling it "Cuil"...would make sence to me!!!

Geekologie writer is phat y'all
:)

Nous sommes tous foutus !!!!
La pertinence est pas terrible je trouve même si la présentation sous formze de colonnes est attrayante...

Took me long enough to change from Yahoo to google, please - why do they have to keep changing shit? :D

See, my comment on the geekologie writer being "phat" could be misconstrued...I'm pretty sure he isn't phat as in his bodily mass in pounds and ounces but more phat in the sence of him being the man...just wanted to clear that one up....cause i'm bored at work...

...oh and "Cuil" is pants...Google FTW

We didn’t find any results for “geekologie writer sexy monster”

LOL i tried it and typed in geekologie and it found nothing then i tried geekologie.com and still it found some off topic websites... this engine sucks..all though it is organized when u type search words in the box... still it sucks bad....really really bad...it sucks...SUCKS!!!

@ 5 HAHA your right, and google has results for that!!!

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=geekologie+writer+sexy+monster&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Again i must state GOOGLE FTW!!!!

hahah, there are no results for "geekologie", funny.

http://www.cuil.com/search?q=geekologie&sl=long

that cuil thing's search results are pretty cluttered. I'll stick to my usual porn sites thank you very much.

Yeah, I did a bunch of different searches and compared them to google and I'd have to say that cuil sucks balls. It is completely useless. It doesn't even treat quotes properly. Plus it does not have every website indexed, I cant find a search that brings up geekologie or even my own website(which is top 5 on most relevent google searches). I think this is just a bunch of hot air. Most of the results that come up are landing pages with spam and links to other sites something google does a lot of work to remove.

As I understand it, Google doesn't make the size of its page index public; the "3 times the size of the Google index!" brouhaha seems to be pretty much a wild-assed guess by the Cuil people. And it appears to be not even remotely true, based off of every search I've done between the two engines.

Color me unimpressed.

the most indexed websites...that nobody gives a fuck about

Im not impressed with Cuil at all, Its waaaaay too cluttered with crap. Keep it simple morons. WebCrawler for life.

"3 times the size of the Google index!"... It's like saying "my Shit is 3 times bigger then yours" and being proud of it. Oh, wait.... never mind

piece of shit
I cant find even my name

I'll never give up my google images.

I thought their claim was a little funny.. Google came back at them with 1 TRILLION web pages indexed according to their blog here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/we-knew-web-was-big.html .

you repeated the link

Call me a goober, but I'm a Yahoo type of person. I've never gotten the fascination with Google...

So stupid. Cuil looks "cool" I guess... the search results aren't relevant though. At least not what I looked up. It's too cluttered also. I'll stick with google, thanks.

More relevance, sites optimize to it and google has so many apps and shit. A lot is tied to google right now, and cuil isn't going anywhere.

Yeah, this search engine is a bunch of hot air by former Google employees. You can return 1 search results, but if none of them are what you want... who gives a shit.

Plus spelling must be correct, it won't offer suggestions, and capitalization matters too - lame.

Lame, lame, lame.

I agree that Cuil has not yet surpassed Google, I suggested this to the geekologie gods because I think that with some time and some support Cuil could be the next step in search engine.

I typed in geekologie and it turned up 0 results... That's my excuse to never use that engine again...

I turned of safe search and typed "porn". No relevant links! Seriously being able to find porn should be the first test case for any search engine. Cuil should just coil up in the corner and die.

LOL did you know that geekilogie.com (typo on purpose this time) is a pron site?

nobody's gonna do it?? alright, fine. SmokingGirl, you are a gooberus maximus. but at least you dont use jeeves like the Writer here.

jk Writer. we all know nobody uses jeeves... right?

HotBot forever!!!! it's just a matter of time before you people realize it's awesomeness

Hey, didn't they axe Jeeves? Isn't it just "Ask.com" now? I liked Jeeves. Poor guy.

I tried Cuil and it didn't even turn up my brother's website when I searched for his name. For the record, the URL to my brother's site IS HIS NAME.

Conclusion: Cuil is Laim.

A shame the search doesn't actually work heh. Kinda defeats the point of the site and makes the amount of sites they have indexed pretty questionable. However it does look nice and when you DO get results back the layout is pretty appealing. If they fix the bugs then who knows, maybe it could compete with Google.

But until then, a search engine that doesn't really search...

I'm not a fan.

Man, I experimented with Cuil too, and my conclusion is also that it sucked balls. WTF? "geekolgie" on Cuil. Results: none. "geekologie" on Google. Results: Very first result is this site. Seriously, WTF Cuil, maybe before you advertise, you should just do a quick check to make sure you don't FREAKIN' SUCK BEYOND ALL REASON. Just a suggestion.

Yeeeeahhhh..... heard about it yesterday, as soon as I got home I gave it the ol' search engine test, you know the one right!? I Judge search engines on how well i can seach for Pr0n, and this site is by far the suckyest! sucks so bad it makes lycos look like the shit! sorry google has got this thing beat!!!!!!

I will never give up on AltaVista's image search! NEVER!

You think that's funny? Cuil's so hated that someone has started a site to protest them...

http://www.cuil-sucks.com/

That's good old fashioned annoyance [and html]

No results were found for: geekologie
If you’ve checked your spelling, you could try using fewer or different keywords to broaden your search.
Still no luck? Send us your feedback: noresults@cuil.com

you're non-existent to them; i'm sorry.

Yeah, so, if you go to this search engine and search for "geekologie" it returns ZERO results. As in, it hasn't even indexed the Geekology page that lel me to it. Sad sad sad.

i think it's a commercial joke
all searches are lost in space
yes, i'm sure it's a joke
in every other searchengine... I get at last min. one hit
at "cuil" the answer is ZERO.........LOL
