Jun 18 2008Wow: Radiohead's Nude Played On Old Computer Parts Is Really Freaking Good
from on
The Imperial March on a floppy disk is still cool and all, but this video takes the concept to a whole new level. It's Radiohead's Nude being played on all kinds of computer parts. It was made by James Houston, a student from the Glasgow School of Art's visual communication program. And not only is the music amazing well created, but the video is legit as well. The instruments are as follows:
Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Guitars (rhythm & lead)
Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer - Drums
HP Scanjet 3c - Bass Guitar
Hard Drive array - Act as a collection of bad speakers - Vocals & FX
Let it load and then skip to a little after 1:00 for it to get started. Otherwise you have to listen to a minute of static and watch some flashing color bands that may or may not be trying to hypnotize you. They only gave me a boner though. I love static. And flashing colors? Don't even get me started. *shivers*
Big Ideas (don't get any) [vimeo]
Thanks Michael Jackson, but stay the fuck away from my kids

The Radiohead song is "Nude," not "Naked." Close though. :)

Anything that features the Sinclair Spectrum loading sounds is cool with me. Thankfully he didn't get an "R-Tape Loading Error 0:1" message. I'm off to play some Jet Set Willy.

The video is beautiful!
The Sinclair Spectrum loading screen and sounds brought back memories. Were they trying to induce epilepsy with those flashy lines? I remember my +3 was connected to an old TV by RF cable and it would slowly tune out so you'd have to pause your game and retune the TV.

That was freakin' awesome.. I love any application of old school hardware (I refuse to call it retro if you still use it on a regular basis!). Too bad he never made the contest, I'm sure RH would've sat up and taken notice.

my roomie informs me that the "Static" is actually the Sinclair's program; it was recorded onto audiotape and transmitted as audio, so by including it at the beginning of the clip the guy has enabled anyone with a Sinclair to play it's part! Pretty cool IMO.

I like this better than the original

Aw shite!! If you can watch that and not have a smile on your face, I just doan kno. You are missing something. Check yourself with an oscilloscope the next time you break wind - you probably leave no trace, like a vampire and a mirror.
And reading all the comments had me howling. Definitely the funniest is "YAHTZEE"
