Jun 20 2008Woman Died Watching TV In 1966, Found 42 Years Later, Probably Stunk In The Interim

dead-tv.jpg

A woman in Croatia died in 1966 while watching television in her apartment, and was just now discovered.

Hedviga Golik made herself a cup of tea and sat down to watch some television in her hometown of Zagreb, Croatia. Sadly, she died in her chair. This was in 1966. She was just found, 42 years later, in her time capsule mausoleum where she's been sitting ever since. She never finished her tea.

Apparently her apartment was never checked, despite a missing person report being filed when she went missing. Only recently did the authorities break into the unit and discover the woman while trying to determine who owned the place.

Damn, that's freaking nuts! I can't imagine how the place went unchecked for 42 years. It had to have stunk like shit for a good long while. Kind of like my place. Isn't that right, Grandma? Grandma? Awh, shit.

*what the authorities said to themselves*
Some broad is missing...but we're sure as hell not checking the apartment.
*42 years later*
I, uh, hmmm. I guess we should have checked the house.

Hey, can someone turn my television off. My electric bill is going to kill me.

Wow....just wow...that is some way to die. It's almost like dying and being cryogenically frozen but better because the WHOLE FREAKING HOUSE is frozen at that moment. Must have been some sight after a couple of weeks though...eww.

How the f*** can they tell that she never finished her tea?

This story is actually inaccurate. The actual story which is on cnn.com differs greatly. I love you Geekologie but I find CNN a more reliable news source for non-geek related things. Here's the link if anyone's interested.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/05/16/croatia.body.ap/

They must have an abundance of apartments in Croatia.

How did the corpse pay her rent for 42 years?

It seems that there is a lot of confusion about the matter.

this site says she died in 1973

this 1967, when she was 84

this 1966, when she was 42, adding also mysterious writings on the door of the flat...

O.o

wow this is old "news"
to answer the question for #8, it used to be a communist country and they controlled who lived where. so they gave people apartments back then. there was no rent, it was a taxes issue.

that's totally going to happen to me except it'll be geekologie i sat down to watch because I don't own a tv. they'll also find some dead cats because they haven't yet discovered how to open the cans themselves.

Mom?

theres no rent in Croatia.. we all own r own apartment's (90% of us)..
the funny thing is that i'm from Zagreb, i read the news every bloody day and this is the first i herd of this..

who m i gonna trust? cnn & the geek squad or my daily news? f***ing dilemma!

Yes folks, please read the CNN article, it explains everything. How can you cock up copying an article? Lame.

This is sad--no one noticed. They never thought to look, and she was probably forgotten...

Not the best way to go.

Its not so bad. Hell, she was probably so lonely that she didnt even have anyone to haunt.

The picture that's on here has wires holding the skeleton together...ummm?

Fake!

Pretty impressive feats of ignorance compounded by idiocy displayed in the Gizmodo comments.

It's like everyone obviously from a Western country commenting can't comprehend that a former Communist East European town is going to function a teensy weensy bit different than Podunk, Arkansas. Oh and there was a war there. Saw it on the CNN in the late 80's. It wasn't just pretty pictures and Top Gun.

Oh come on people, please be smart. Those of you who are, good, those of you who are not, please try. There is an original story, yes, and someone actually made a spin off, a parody, a spoof, or a satire (whatever you personally want to use) of this original story. Come on now, of course the title is fake. It's like pointing at Pam Anderson's boobs and yelling "Fake!" (f***ing duh!).

So what if the geekologie writer wanted to have some fun, who's to say he can't? It's not like he's endorsing anything, or claiming this story is fact. This is a site for entertainment. It's not the first time I see people acting this way...quite interesting that those who call themselves geeks (by proxy, if not directly), don't seem to have a sense of humor. Again, this is directed at those who are asshats.

Asshats.

wow that hoe got free rent and electricity for that long?

OMFGWTF? Croatia is not a communist country!

hmm, intresting

i live in croatia , the "comunist" country , and funny thing we heard for no such story here...

people should really check things out b4 they post informations.

from some religious belief ...i heard jesus was walking on water...
from some nation money statment ...in god we trust...

LFMAO

@20 guate6 -- sorry for the asshat behavior. I came to the post and kind of just followed the herd. I should have realised it was fake from the name:

"Hedviga Golik"-- lamest fake name ever.

wouldn't the electrical outlet screw up at some point, after the tube blew out on the tv, or the lamp wire finally dry-rotted, or when the element on the hot water heater finally went bad? i mean, there are so many things that could burn down a building after being left in place for 40 plus years.

not picking on the geek-writer, but more picking on the guy that came up with the original story. lol. though it is *fascinating!*, i find this one a little hard to swallow, after some thought.

@#5: when liquid dries, it tends to leave a deposit of any solids that are suspended in it. tea is just a suspension in water. when tea dries up, even after evaporation, it leaves a deposit on the surface of the tea mug. it would probably not be a "line" as some would imagine, but more of a film, or dry-coating on the inside of the mug, due to the long evaporation process. There would also be some residue of bacterial activity and mold. ...not to mention, that when the body decomposed, over time, the mug probably shifted in position from her hand, to rest in the bones and probably had some exposure to rotting flesh.

pretty gross, but over time, that mug was exposed to all kinds of contamination that would make it really hard to determine just what was originally inside of it.

...but of course, there is always the possibility that the mug was left on the table beside her. ...eh... at that point, it's just a matter of looking at the residue and looking at whatever was on the counter and in the sink.

in other words, the lady had some tea, and she didn't wash the cup, it's a safe bet that if she died in the chair, that she didn't fully finish the drink. i feel sorry for this person. what a very undignified manner to leave this world...

This is funny and all, but why is it on Geekologie? It's not really technology save for the television she was watching...

hello ....some one from croatia.
So I know the story a bit better.
The place was a small room in the attick.
It was ment for people who took care of building. (like cleaning and fixing smaller things)
So the bills for her flat came to "everyone" and they paid for it.
Since nobody really did know who is the owner of the flat(room) nobody went to check.
The scary part is that she had family.
I live in the similar building and if somebody died in my attic nobody would know.
We all own (every owner of the flat in the building) the attic and everybody can use it. But nobody does because when you go and do something with it (like put antenna) some neighbor comes and says I have right to use this place also and I don't like what you are doing and it bothers me and go away.
And he has absolute right to do that.

Same happened there. They were all fighting as to who can see what is with that room and there were always somebody who didn't want to break the door.

The skeleton is wired together....

you guys are all ridiculous. first of all it was in 24 sata the next day- so who ever was in zagreb said that it wasn't in the news obviously lives under a rock. secondly, it was also on dnevnik that same day just with minor details.
lastly, communist? i think not.
za dom f***ers

I have been an avid, daily reader of your site for the last 6 months. Today is the last time I visit your site. You guys have been consistently hurdling into a whole since the first day I checked your site. You are running out of ideas and spreading them way too thin - this post, amongst others, was inaccurate not to mention poorly executed. You could have atleast covered up for the inaccuracy by delivering a sort of comic relief that atleast is worthy of your reader's time. I've seen more coherency in amateur blogs then this garbage. Soo long, Geekologie

if you follow the link back to the original story everything Mr Geek said was correct according to it although CNN may be be right instead.

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/2008/05/16/woman-sat-dead-in-front-of-tv-for-42-years-86908-20419070/

whats ever the case, nobody cares #31

in order to "hurdle" into a hole, one would have to leap over a hurdle that was placed on a descending slope. That one person then would probably fall forward after the first hurdle on account of already being in a downward trajectory.

That might be really funny.

In order to "consistently" HURTLE down a hole, with HURTLE meaning to proceed forward at an alarmingly fast speed, the hole would have to be bottomless.

I'm too annoyed with you to correct all the other diction mistakes you made. Kind of like your girlfriend when she told you "you make me sad" and then she left you.

Awww. Whatever will Geekologie do without BG32P?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????/

uhm dearest "Croatians" who posted here, your country was in fact a socialist republic until 1991, and please do not tell me that Tito wasn't a communist because that would be a lie.
Thank you

On the tea question, I have a cup next to me that has been left for... oh about 3 weeks now (Ah to be a student), you can't really tell it was tea, but I'm sure at some point with tests you'd be able to confirm that. Right now it looks like the surface of a planet with mould lakes. I like it.

dear 'beep' non croatian and apparent imbecile with complete disregard to his personal safety:

apparently you are unaware of the first croatian nation known as the era of NDH in 1941 after the fall of the ever present effort of the first yugoslavia. tito was later an authoritarian socialist who came into popularity through 'balkan politics' which you are NOT familiar with -not the people of present day croatia. the eternal stride for an independent croatia never died...hence THE WAR.

good morning welcome to 2006! if we were socialist we wouldn't have shed as much blood as we did to get the f*** out now would we. stating that tito was a commy and that yugoslavia was until 1991 basically proves that you read wikipedia and have no basic knowledge of the balkan region, people, or culture.

americans are fat and pedofiles, and if you say its not true you're lying...i read facts and stats on the internet and news.

over generalizing a people and calling them communist after the strife and bloodshed they’ve faced for generations now, and who will now willingly slice you into dogfood while your mom is asleep in the next room is dangerous and stupid you yankee.

please take your european history book from high school, set it on fire and then throw yourself in with it.

za dom

feckless, you may be right but you sound more retarded then he did... he expressed an opinion and you missed the point entirely - why do you care so much about diction? you need to learn to read between the lines, or atleast invest your time elsewhere

Agreed. Feckless, get a life

par3, aren't you overgeneralizing a people by saying all americans are overweight and pedophiles? do you think before you type, or does your anger make your brain turn off? you're a rude idiot.

Sorry, not dumb enough to believe this one! The skeleton would not even look like that...it would have collapsed on it self in a sitting position and clothes would still be on it! Whoever believes this one, hey, I have some oil wells I want to sell you!

Everyone who posted above me is a retard.

FAKE!!!!

Etc

ewwwaahh omg ewwwwaah
just imagine daahh person hu found hur
ewwwaahh ehtz just gross ewwwaahh

FAKE YOU DUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive died reading ur fake article lol jkjkjkjkjkjk
