Jun 25 2008Rotating Skyscraper To Be Built In Dubai

A rotating skyscraper is slated to be built in, wait for it -- Dubai! The structure, designed by Italian architect David Fisher, has floors that can each rotate independently of one another. Allegedly the building will be powered entirely by wind and solar energy via outer solar panels and wind turbines between the floors. I'm curious to see how that works out. I'm also curious how you and your neighbors decide who gets the ocean view and when. I'm guessing it involves threats and/or a good amount of weapon brandishing. Condos are currently going for about $3,000 per square foot but don't bother calling to ask -- I already did and the bastards aren't selling 1' x 1's.
Hit the jump for a VIDEO including some computer animations of the buildng and an interview with the architect.

Thanks Richard, Asbo, and Chris -- send me a postcard if you go see it. But please, no anthrax this time.

I'm amazed / blown away by how much money these people in Dubia are spending on architecture.

Well...they better start cracking if they want it up by 2010. That would be some fast construction.

This is absolutely brilliant...must be an extremely innovative architectural team. I want to visit Dubai just to see it.

#10: Don't be an asshat. Just because you saw something, doesn't mean everyone else has.
Dubai has way too much money. I believe, that if it turned into a philanthropic nation, they could end world hunger. But will that happen? Haha, no. Bastards.

Next up, they build the Macross One.

A typical skyscraper over it's first 50yr costs the same in maintainence as it's construction. This thing will burn through that every 10yrs or less. Especially if it's being built first in Italy. The Italians are stunning designers, but precision engineers of reliable technology they ain't!
Good luck to them if they can get this thing to work, but I don't give it good odds.

What if you have motion sickness? Can you make your floor NOT move?

I wonder how long you're going to be waiting for those vehicle elevators. And what happens when the system breaks? Will everybody be stuck in or out of their condos? It's got to be a pain to fix.
Looks cool but doesn't seem very practical.

looks like a giant fire hazard to me.

I hope that they synchronize it so that it looks like the first picture at least once a day, cause the rest of the pics look like crap.

#13, Dubai is not really a nation, it's one of United Arab Emirates' emirates/cities.
I've never been there, but I did stop in another city, Abu Dhabi, on my way to Australia. It was a strange place - you could see all the money, and yet the architecture was mixed modern European and Arab. Weird. I wonder if Dubai is like that for the most part.

I love how they keep announcing these gigantic building projects to cover up that Dubai keeps arresting people over a speck of a tiny amount of an illegal substance.
Fuckwads.

I feel like there are a number of other nations that, if turned philanthropic, could also end world hunger. But will that happen? No, we're all bastards. Dubai just wants to be the coolest, that way they'll have some favor in the eyes of the biggest bastards on the playground.

Sooo Unreal... here's a site for anyone wanting to look at projects/upcoming things from Dubai: http://www.dubai-architecture.info/DUB-GAL1.htm

Dude! Are you kidding!? Has ANYBODY seen enough horror movies in here to know that this is NOT a good idea! Buildings that are alive?
This gives me a creepy Resident Evil feel...or a creepy 'Cube' feel...
But on the other hand-- how fun would 'Hide and Seek' be?
26. Ian - June 28, 2008 2:22 PM
maybe we should make buildings that have wind turbines so we could afford to offer dubai 20 bucks a barrel, see how long it takes before it piles up and they agree to our terms, maybe then they will stop flaunting all of their wealth and go back to the stone age. As it is, Dubai is rich and knows that their oil is going to be worth more than gold until the last drop is pulled from the earth.

#16: You find another, more economical skyscraper to live in.
